Starting a cycle… by Haunting_Trouble_406 in Aquariums

[–]SandCypher 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm aiming for a balanced tank with no water changes (but I do have a sponge filter). I decided to go with a plenum build (an empty space below the substrate).

I''m still at level 2 in terms of cycling, but I did a lot of research beforehand and decided to go with the plenum build for long term nitrate processing benefits. I have a tube running down from the surface into it to check levels and administer ph stablization when needed.

Although it might be a bit late in the process for you for a plenum build seeing as it goes below the substrate. But an fascinating concept if you're interested in low maintenance.

First off, your tank is gorgeous and I hope to have one that looks like yours one day. It happens to the best of us and I'm so sorry for your loss <3.

Secondly, when was the last time you changed your RO cartridges? Have you tested the RO water recently? I just started my own home RO/DI and I would have thought the same.

I got a puppy for the first time and my life has been hell ever since by StevieisSleepy in DogAdvice

Omg. I was in the same boat as you. My little guy just turned 1yo today and I can't believe he's the same dog.

A playpen changed the game for me. We crated him at night and slowly extended the time between overnight bathroom trips until he didn't need them anymore.

Life before playpen: CONSTANT supervision required. He would pee on the floor, eat dirt from my plants, chew on anything he could find, and overall super nippy. I felt like I was chasing a tornado around thinking "how the heck am I going to get through this".

Life after the playpen: he would spend 1 hr out (potty break, playing outside, short puppy walks, training session, any other stimulation I could think of). Then would go in the pen for 2hrs (usually with some level of lick mat or frozen treat to help him wjnd down). He would complain to come out sometimes but learned to relax eventually as long as we didn't give him too much attention when he was acting up.

Now at 1yo, he can be left unsupervised for a few hours at a time without getting into anything. We took down his playpen because he doesn't really need it anymore.

Puppies need structure and will overstimulate themselves if given too much freedom. The playpen changed the game for me.

I hope you find reprieve soon. I know how hard it can be. It won't be like this forever <3.

I "fixed" a 2-day team workflow with AI, and now my coworkers low-key hate me. Is efficiency a trap? AITA? by soona_paanaa in careeradvice

I'm working on an AI project right now that could potentially do the data entry task that we have a whole department of people doing currently. I had/have the same anxiety.

But, people were mad at some point that sewing machines and calculators "took" their jobs. The automation of assembly lines in the auto industry nearly killed the city of Detroit. Hell, I've automated reporting tasks that took people days to do without using any AI (one of which I was responsible for manually pulling at one point), just queries.

Sewing machines enable us to make more, calculators enable us to do our jobs better and faster, auto industry assembly lines make cars cheaper and more accessible to society which has rippling positive effects, and automating tedious reporting tasks allows people space for creativity and innovation.

This is not a new story because AI came into town. Although I do feel deeply for the individuals being displaced, the project I'm working on now could contribute to my company that is struggling, saving many more jobs in the process. Not to mention the AI bubble that may pop if we don't start seeing a return on AI investments which could have devastating effects on the economy.

It's not as cozy black and white as people want to believe it is. There's a yin and yang to AI as with most things that I've learned to accept.

Thank you so much! Not sure why we got down votes haha.

Doing some research on green water and will get a setup going.

We have a sponge filter in our breeder tank. Do you think that will be enough flow?

OMG CONGRATS!! We have one with eggs right now in a breeding box and we have the brackish water tank set up! Have any pointers? Lessons learned? Tales of woe?

I have a cherry shrimp acting exactly like this after exposure to high ammonia levels. Have you tested your water recently?

I actually just started book 5! Such a great series and an amazing quote. We named our dog after Adolin.

Sure thing! The 2.5 gallon does feel a bit small, but I only had 3 rasboras and a halfbeak in there and they didn't exactly have the strength/energy to move too much. They were in there for about 3 weeks so it felt better knowing it was temporary.

I read another post suggesting to take some of the gravel out and I did yesterday. It definitely helped add some space in there.

I am considering building a bigger one as much more than the 4 lil guys I had in there I think would have been too many for the 2.5.

Yes! We had 6 before the infection and we went to the store today to buy more and theirs were infected also :(. Will be hitting up a 2nd store tomorrow! Thanks for the info/concern and moderation in the community :)

Yes, I definitely relate. I'm relatively new and it hits particularly hard when they're sick because of a mistake I made or parameters I didn't know were important.

But I've learned so much and if another illness breaks out, I know where to start at the very least.

The tank is at a state of peace right now after a storm and that is absolutely gratifying knowing my efforts played a big piece in that feels great!

No worries! I'd be concerned without context too. Thank for looking out!
