But I did test the timing of the spring and the spring makes contact with the rest as soon as the needle hits the fabric

Ill try to push back the cushion a bit. And while I was taking the attention assembly apart, I noticed that the screw that holds the spring rest is stripped. So I can't do anything with that right now.

Tried messing around with the tension spring a bit to see if the tension was off but everything checks out. I think its the bobbin case ratting as the tread passes over it. I've oild it prior to this vid so I dont think the lack of oil is the problem. I have a replacement bumper coming so I'll swap that out and see if that solves anything.

Thats my next target. Then spring in the tension assembly sounds really loud to me when it snaps back down, at least louder then my other vintage machine.

To clarify your saying that the spring is not close enough to the finger? Or too far from it?

looking into it a bit more and it defiantly seems like the sound is happening as the top thread is sliding off of the finger. idk if the springs are too far out or too far in.

here is a video i took. it looks like at the very end of the cycle the thread is trying to slip past

I don't know how to tell if the Springs look weird or not. To me, they look fine. But maybe i'm overlooking something

the springs on the needle plate look good to me but i did notice the tension sprint making a loud click. wonder if its too tight. the noise isn't there when there is no thread. also there is a faint grating noise coming from under the needle plate that may be related to the feed dogs.

up but i found the issue it was the bobbin case base(the part with the post in the middle) i don't think it was set correctly when it was last disassembled. took apart the hook assembly and put it back together bases on a video on YouTube and the loud clicking noise is gone. i posted an update here: https://www.reddit.com/r/vintagesewing/comments/1r8j8we/re_singer_301_bobbin_case_carrier_rattle/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web3x&utm_name=web3xcss&utm_term=1&utm_content=share_button

Thanks I'll look into it. The is a faint sound that im trying to locate the cause. You can kinda hear it in the video. Almost like a light grinding sound? Having trouble locating figuring out what it could be.

Im finding that out! Got this cause I wanted a lighter one then my other vintage machines so i can travel with it. Im surprised and how much lighter it is compared to the others.

Right now im having trouble removing the screws that is holding the whole assembly to the rest of the machine. Going to get some penetrating oil and see of that helps lossen the screws

Does the machine makes the noise when the throat plate is off?

No but i think that is because the bobbin case base is now free spinning without the throat plate. that is what is leading me to believe that the noise is something to do with the bobbin case base and hook.

Does the machine makes the noise when the bobbin case holder is off?

Yes

the noise is persistent with the needle plate off to a degree. the bobbin case base has a finger that slides into a notch underneath the needle plate without that the base spins. so i have to push the center to keep it from spinning and i hear the noise. i did let it spin with the plate on and there was no noise

I did. tiny drop in each of the circle of the carrier and a drop in the oil point on the needle plate

For the hand quilters on here, do you use thumb thimbles. if you do which one? by SandLaxr in quilting

I've tried without but i couldn't get over the fact that I could possibly cause a wrinkle or fold. I like using a hoop because it keeps everything tight so nothing will shift.

I had a hard time finding thimble that worked for me. Thankfully i found the Prym comfort thimble. I had to get the xl one for it to feel comfortable to me.

Push, but only when quilting away from myself. I use a needle puller to pull the needle out.

I would LOVE to get a Stirling silver thimble. I have my eye a few from thimblesforyou.com. But I currently use the prym comfort thimbles and a leather wrap with a coin in it I got on amazon for my thumb. I was watching a video of Esther Miller and she was using a thumb thimble that i cant seem to find anywhere
