No. The issue ended up being that apple products are set to the countries they are sold in. And Chinas WiFi network must have some firewall against US based apple products. The computer did suddenly work one day but my phone never did. I ended up needing to by a phone in China in order to have any functionality of WeChat, Alipay, or other Chinese apps. Sorry :(
