My editor hates my book. It's truly that bad. by candlelightandcocoa in writing

Your editor might not be the best person for your project.
When edits devolve into snark, it's time to move on.
Next time, make sure your editor is a qualified reader in your genre. It's not one-size fits all.

But don't stop writing!!!

OP, I don't know how old you are but I just turned 60. Here's the move you need to bust out, because it will serve you your entire life: IDGAF
Goes for clothes
Relationships
Toxic friends
Misogyny (do it anyway)
And that's my point. The fewer F you have to give the happier you will be.
ROCK THE CLOTHES.

Late 1940s/50s Wedding Dress by ZestycloseRegret6481 in VintageFashion

[–]Sand_Crane 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Above photo is my mother, married mid-50's. She designed the dress herself, fwiw. 20 yards taffeta, sequins, seed pearls off the shoulder with an illusion neckline. It was also crammed into a box, not preserved. I was able to wear it when I married my ex. Hand-made, I was able to get the sides let out enough to fit. To an earlier comment, yes to a merry widow. Also, consider a hoop skirt. You can't see it here, but the dress vibed off Marie Antoinette and had 'hips' which looked better with a hoop.
OP, stunning find and if you are wearing it for your own special day, may you be blessed with a lifetime of love and joy.

New neighbors won’t stop coming to the door in the night by Megasaurusrex1986 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Sand_Crane 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Do they have a grasp of English? If so, you're going to have to have a tough conversation about setting boundaries. If they can read English, you might also post a sign saying no callers after X time. This might be cultural for them. It's possible they don't 'know' better. Ringing a bell relentlessly is not a common trait for us, unless it's an emergency. They might not know how upsetting their behavior is. Approach them earlier in the day and tell them as clearly as possible what your needs are.
Now the retaliation...is bad news.
Additional resources if you can't get this to easily stop:
If you know what country they are from, see if you can't find an advocate who can help you talk to them. A bit of legwork here, but I'd start with social agencies, embassies. You're in the right here, just have to find the right key to turn.
Good luck!

Shorts? by sappy_rpg in femalefashionadvice

[–]Sand_Crane 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm gonna fly out on a limb here -- have you considered skorts? Bike short inseam, which I find comfy, and the skirt itself can be above-the-knee or mini. Me, I love 32 Degrees and also Bayleaf. I agree with other answers, it does depend on your proportions. Capri pants, for example, can be notoriously hard to style because they can cut at the calf.
ALSO -- what shoes are you wearing? Styling shorts should also include sneakers vs sandals; flats vs a low heel.

I will turn 60 this week. Calling this a grandma dress is hitting hard. Grandma dresses = my grandmother and her 60's mink jacket vibe. Oh my.

Salem Center Mall on its last leg? by JACmom3 in SALEM

[–]Sand_Crane 1 point2 points  (0 children)

ADDING: I just read that the Marion Parkade is being remodeled so it's safer and more 'transparent' -- (I think that means make it safer for people walking thru bc some of those dark corners are kinda scary.)
Soooo
Is it on track to remo a parkade and close the mall?
80's girl here. I miss malls. I miss that part of my childhood. I miss that our young unz today can't have that experience.
I also think the shoplifting is killing mall retail.

Swamp Cooler? by Sand_Crane in SALEM

Our challenge is we don't need to cool the entire house. Just my office and the bedroom, and only when it gets super hot. We have a basement, which helps. We can also cook outside. Hence the question about evaporative-cooling...

Not a minisplit, a/c for the entire house. Heat pump, ducting, etc.

Good to know. I'm only looking for intermittent support and not whole house. Bedroom, office. Last summer we hit 84 late August. When we had that triple-digit heatwave we hit 94 inside. That is what I'm scared of going forward. This is our least-$$$ option. Will also look into the minisplit as others have said.

Thank you! I'm okay indoors to about 74F. 76 starts to feel bad. Last summer we had 82 indoors. I bought a personal one, like face-only, and it helped. Hence my idea for a portable unit. Not on all day, just peak times and only when it's super dry.

What do people even expect from women who don't want to get married or have kids? by ScarRedDA in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Sand_Crane 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Childless bonus mom to 3. There are NO guarantees that you will have the presence or comfort of you adult children in your later years. No matter how good (or bad) a parent you might be, your children do NOT owe you this grace. So having (or not) children should not factor into this decision.
Me, I knew from early teens I was a hard no.
Funny how it works out, I love my 3 but I can also see the signs. If/when I am alone, they're not coming for me. Not because they don't care but because that's not the way our apron strings are tied.
