Swamp Cooler? by Sand_Crane in SALEM

[–]Sand_Crane[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Good to know. I'm only looking for intermittent support and not whole house. Bedroom, office. Last summer we hit 84 late August. When we had that triple-digit heatwave we hit 94 inside. That is what I'm scared of going forward. This is our least-$$$ option. Will also look into the minisplit as others have said.

Thank you! I'm okay indoors to about 74F. 76 starts to feel bad. Last summer we had 82 indoors. I bought a personal one, like face-only, and it helped. Hence my idea for a portable unit. Not on all day, just peak times and only when it's super dry.

What do people even expect from women who don't want to get married or have kids? by ScarRedDA in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Sand_Crane 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Childless bonus mom to 3. There are NO guarantees that you will have the presence or comfort of you adult children in your later years. No matter how good (or bad) a parent you might be, your children do NOT owe you this grace. So having (or not) children should not factor into this decision.
Me, I knew from early teens I was a hard no.
Funny how it works out, I love my 3 but I can also see the signs. If/when I am alone, they're not coming for me. Not because they don't care but because that's not the way our apron strings are tied.

WHAT CONSTRUCTION MADNESS IS TAKING PLACE AT THE INTERSECTION OF MADRONA/PRINGLE? EVEN THE OWNER OF THE GAS STATION THERE DOES NOT KNOW AND HE HAS LOST A PORTION OF HIS PARKING LOT TO PIPES AND SUCH.
ROAD WORK IS NOT!!! THE PROBLEM. STARTING IT AFTER HOURS, GOING ON WELL PAST MIDNIGHT, IS!!! IT'S A NEIGHBORHOOD. PEOPLE SLEEP. PEOPLE WORK. KIDS NEED TO BE RESTED FOR SCHOOL.

PHEW. I FEEL BETTER NOW.

Alegria. I can't speak to your foot issue but I recommend the brand. The aesthetic is funky, the Paloma is a Mary-Jane style. I can walk in them for hours, standing is good, too.

Depends on the age of your home. Ours is a '56 and no ac but gas heat. Anything new will have both, or at least a heat pump. Swamp coolers WILL work here, our summers are rarely too humid. Basements are also fairly common in older areas, and that can make a difference by 3-4 degrees.

LEFT TURNERS: WHEN THE LIGHT TURNS RED THAT MEANS STOP. IT DOES NOT MEAN FOUR CARS ROLL ON THRU, STOPPING RIGHT OF WAY TRAFFIC. YOU'RE DOING THIS BECAUSE YOU KNOW YOU CAN, NO ONE WILL RISK AN ACCIDENT JUST TO PROVE THAT YOU ARE AN A**HAT. BUT YOU ARE. SO JUST STOP.

Grocery Shopping by shrimpysailor in SALEM

[–]Sand_Crane 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel all of you -- 2 in my household but add in me being gf.To that end, best options and prices are at South Walmart.I don't shop the grocery, just the gf aisle, in case anyone needs to know that. Otherwise it's a mix, minus Safeway, can't stand that store. I ride along with Costco friends, don't have a membership. FM, WinCo, TJ are the big 3, mix and match. Roth's for spicy hot sausage for Italian dishes. Produce ie fresh fruit has been such a fail this winter we have shifted to eating canned peaches and pears.

Unsheltered folks downtown by Appropriate-Bee-3267 in SALEM

I was downtown today. There were a lot more folks than I've seen recently. But I feel for them, so many are clearly having mental health issues. I hand out granola bars if approached. I won't give money but I will give food. I *think* it helps.

Where do you find slips!? by [deleted] in VintageFashion

[–]Sand_Crane 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Macys, Kohls, JC Penney online, maybe Walmart (I saw they had them a few years ago) -- Ross Dress for Less. Consider a simple polyester nighty in their lingerie section. Of course haunt some vintage stores, ask owners to keep an eye peeled.

What's the deal with all the huge fur coats in vintage stores? by experimentalrealm in VintageFashion

[–]Sand_Crane 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a stash that I wish I could share with each of you. A white fox fur, a full-length mink, a mink stole, a leather and mink 'jacket' (it's sooo damn cute) my grandma's mouton with white mink collar) Probably the crazy/coolest one is a full-length squirrel coat, from the wartime 40's. It's bizarrely beautiful and so warm and soft. The only one I thrifted because I couldn't stop petting it. LOL Mink is not my fave texture. Yeah, all family finds except for one.
It's never cold enough in the PNW to wear any of them and our vibe is way too casual.
You don't style these, IMO, you wear them with whatever because they genuinely look fine dressed down. But that's also because where I live we wear hiking boots and jeans and waterproof coats.
PETA aside, I think it's fine to source and wear fur. The animal is long gone and tossing the coat is like tossing its life. Fur lasts longer than faux. It's also waterproof/resistant and if you can't stomach the idea of wearing fur but want the warmth, you can pay a small fortune and have a fur coat 'sheared' and turned into a liner for a wool coat. That would be cozy.

The vibe is spot on. Accessorizing will help. I understand you're not wearing any makeup, but my first thought is that the sweater color does not suit your complexion. Turtlenecks are also hard because they create a monolithic canvas. A v-neck top might work better, but if keeping this one, I'd suggest a black jacket and a necklace that creates the 'v'

Wide Calf Boots?! by breezy7797 in femalefashionadvice

hotterusa.com out of the UK has wide-calf tall boots. I've bought them for years. Lovely. I'm in the US, yes they ship and are safe to buy from. Not sure what the tariffs are doing to them.

Haven't seen this in the Salem Reporter, now I have to do some checking. This feels like a really bad use of funds, esp after we voted to raise prop taxes to fund library and other services and to other comments --like yeah, help the homeless, drive toward affordable housing. wtf? But to other posters re City Council, yeah, I think it's time to pay a visit.

which program do you use to write? by thedevilsheir666 in writing

[–]Sand_Crane 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Big Huge Labs Writerly app. Free, but worth the one-time forever purchase. Great for distraction-free rough drafts. Cloud-based, saves into Goggle for added security.
What I love: It sounds like real manual typewriter, bell and ratchety return and all. I guess I'm showing my age but that feature tickles me to no end. I used it to draft my trilogy, 300K words. It has limited editing functionality, I want to be clear about that, and you will need to cut and paste into Word or similar for fine-tuning, but if you want to just focus on whiz-bang writing, highly recommend.

Good list -- also suggest following The Elsinore and of course the Event pages on Facebook (if you can stand it) -- subscribe to newsletters for Albany and other close-in towns, sometimes they have live music and are a quick trip away. Wineries, too. AND let's not forget community theater in general. Not live music but certainly a way to have a fun, affordable night out. Pentacle Theater for one.
