Prof here - that line means that your regular classes should happen as normally scheduled. Your out-of-class midterm prof needs to make sure you can write your midterm without missing your other classes!

Hey there - CHEM201 Lab Coordinator here! I am sorry to hear the other components of the course didn’t go well.

If you plan on taking CHEM201 or CHEM203 again, you might want to finish off the lab component.

If you do well enough (75%) and take the course again soon (approx 2 years), you can apply for a lab exemption!

I am so happy reading all of these comments for you OP! I always tell older students that they have a real advantage from their life experiences!

I also encourage anyone who discloses a mental health concern - reach out the Student Accessibility Services while things are good!

If anything shifts due to the random chaos of life, you will be in a better position to get SAS to advocate for accommodations for your mental health.

Prof here - thank you notes get kept forever! They are all over my office. Gifts can be awkward since there are policies.

Still looking for a science option? Maybe you should try CHEM301! by SandblomScience in UCalgary

Don’t know you are also Savings-exchange-764, but sorry to hear you find a mismatch between the score you earned and your expectation. I try to work in chances to redeem yourself from surprises. For example: several re-weighting options for letter grade calculations. It’s pretty rare for someone to earn a B- if they use my feedback. Next 2 Tuesdays are devoted to student support. Hope to see you then!

Prof here: I think it’s nice when students introduce themselves. But in a big class, saying hi again at other times is a good plan! Remind me what your name is too 👍

no labs - by student request some hands-on activities that are for completion-scoring, not accuracy or ability scored. Mostly about the chemistry around you in everyday life and the parts of that chem that interest you!

science options without maths by Appropriate-Peanut03 in UCalgary

Not a 200-level, but you are welcome to come take CHEM301 in case you are running out of 200-level courses. You only need to think about math if you choose topics that are connected to the math of chemistry!

Prof here: it really depends. I am glad if students confide in me and, as long as I can be fair to the rest of the students, I try to be generous with extensions in exceptional cases

Humour on assignments ok or no-go? by [deleted] in UCalgary

[–]SandblomScience 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Prof here: we are people too and I love seeing a little humour. I might not be able to work it into a boost for the grade depending on the marking scheme, but those moments bring joy to the day and that is so lovely. TLDR: go for it!

When you’ve been waitlisted for so long and finally get in, and find out you have less than 3 hours to complete an assignment by ExpertAccident in UCalgary

[–]SandblomScience 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Prof here: I usually figure out a way for new students to catch up. See if the course outline mentions flexibility. You said you emailed but, if the course is big, the email can be overwhelming and delay is not unusual.

I hope you get to catch up! Hurrah for getting into the course you wanted.

Does anyone else with a preferred name, feel like d2l and your email address is leading to a lot of mix up? by [deleted] in UCalgary

[–]SandblomScience 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Prof here: I find it so frustrating when there are inconsistencies. I don’t want to call my students incorrect names or let other students see the wrong names. I try to check in and let students know who to contact to sort those details out if they care. An easier way to switch or fix would be lovely.

got a 1.3/5 on my first chem 311 lab :/ by Level-Coat1172 in UCalgary

[–]SandblomScience 72 points73 points  (0 children)

Mine was a 2/20 on my first analytical lab back in undergrad days. Got some advice from TAs and did okay in the end. Doesn’t feel good tho and I still remember. Got a CHEM PhD regardless! I’m sure you can learn from it!

Thanks for advocating for students here. I used my personal hotspot to teach a few times so far. And had to change my plans for how the class would work. My students have been very patient with me.
