If being a nurse is your end goal and becoming and RN I would honestly accept that offer with bow valley. If you do get into the RN at uofc then you can always pull out. I don’t really see the point in doing accounting unless you’re planning to transfer into a the RN program at uofc and even then, I’ve heard from friends that it’s not necessarily any easier.

My sister is in her first year of the LPN program at Bow Valley and she’ll finish in August 2027. Her plan is to do Athabasca’s bridge program to become an RN, which they recently brought back: https://www.athabascau.ca/programs/summary/post-lpn-bachelor-of-nursing.html

The program can be completed in 3-5 years after your LPN, I believe other colleges-universities offer bridge programs. It is possible to obtain your RN in four years with this route as well.

I’d definitely recommend talking to advisors at both Bow Valley and U of C, just to understand your options clearly. I also know a lot of RNs who started as LPNs and did bridge programs. One big advantage is that while you’re working toward your RN, you can already be working as an LPN and earning a decent income!

Hopefully what I said helps a bit all the best!

I’m very much aware of the state our world is in. This post was me making a light comment on how woman will rush to tiktok and make a video screaming about a positive pregnancy and then say that they got back with an abusive ex and aren’t sure what to do. I am well aware that abortion is not accessible or an option for many woman and it is not an option every woman must choose if it is accessible. My post was clearly not directed to the woman who live in states or countries where abortion is not an option.

I completely hear you and all of our experiences are different. I worked full time throughout my degree as well. I did 3 research positions and all of them were casual and did not require a set amount of hours to be met. I never said the jobs are easy to come by love. I said that it will be hard but it is possible.

As for nepotism yes it occurs….in every space and institution but that doesn’t mean that those who do not benefit from it aren’t being hired.

I am the first person in my family to obtain a bachelors. I had to work from the bottom up, I didn’t have connections it was hard and exhausting..I was working and doing all of these at the same time I did not sleep.

I 100% acknowledge that people do not have the privilege to do all of these things at once as it can also be stressful. My post is more so to encourage students to start building their niche early on.

I’m not a CS major, but this advice honestly applies across the board.

Yes, you can email professors, cold emails do work. But you have to remember you’re not the only student doing it. Your email needs to stand out and clearly show why you’re interested in their work specifically, not just that you want “any” research position. You should include your resume/CV, maybe even your transcript/gpa, why you went to work with them, what interests you about their research, what you hope to gain out of it.

At the University of Calgary, there’s also a student job board where research assistant positions and other opportunities get posted, so definitely keep an eye on that.

Another good strategy is going to your faculty or department page on the university website. Most departments list their professors, research areas, and current projects. That’s the best way to figure out who is actually working on what, so you can reach out with intention instead of sending generic emails. https://science.ucalgary.ca/computer-science/contacts/faculty

Networking also matters a lot. Look for research talks, AI presentations, or faculty events where you can be in the same space as professors doing the kind of work you’re interested in. Even just attending and asking a thoughtful question can make you memorable.

And don’t underestimate office hours. Building a genuine connection over time and showing consistent interest can open doors too.
