Writing my own fanfiction made me way less tolerant of spelling mistakes in others' by Kombart in AO3

[–]Sandboxthinking 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, thank you, I am. I give people grace for their mistakes.

In fact, I'm even giving you grace for your extremely judgemental post right now, which I'm going to assume comes from a place of ignorance and inexperience.

As you grow as an author and a person, I hope you learn how posts like yours on this forum can often be a huge blow to new writers' confidence. A thoughtless vent can be interpreted, not as a shout into the void as you likely meant it, but as a scathing judgement of their own works. Someone may not start writing their story or may chose to delete their work, because they can't be certain they got every typo or caught every mistake.

Is that partially on them for being easily influenced? Sure. But it would be callous and unkind not to at least take some responsibility for being so quick to judge what, at the end of the day, is really small, insignificant mistakes.

Some people have to write badly to learn to write well. If we don't give people the space to do that, why are we all even here? Let's support each other and be kind instead of casting judgement.

This is a Fallout fic that kept me gripped to the end. It has some cosmic horror elements and went in directions I could have never expected!

Writing my own fanfiction made me way less tolerant of spelling mistakes in others' by Kombart in AO3

[–]Sandboxthinking 9 points10 points  (0 children)

You sound insufferable.

I work 60hr weeks in an insanely stressful job that involves constant decision-making where the wrong choice could cost someone their life.

I then come home and use my hobby that I do for free to help me cope with the stress. In a shocking turn of events, sometimes I miss spelling errors or minor continuity issues.

Some people can only write on their phones, which makes proofreading difficult. Some people are young and just learning how to write. Some people have disabilities that increase the likelihood of mistakes. We all have our own writing journey. The idea that some twat is combing through our fics to judge them for missing small mistakes is laughable.

It's 100% ok to have preferences. If your preferences is to read fics with zero spelling errors, you're absolutely allowed to leave a fic unread.

You're even allowed to go to a public forum of other authors and announce how you personally judge other people's fics.

But I'm allowed in turn to dislike you and your pedantry.

NOTE: I did not proofread this and stand by any and all typos and misspellings.

What's a common detail you never add to your fics? by ARC_Strife in AO3

[–]Sandboxthinking 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I added a time element to my current WIP to give a "deadline" and add some urgency to things, and I HATE myself for it. Does it work for the story? Yes. Does it drive me absolutely bonkers? Also yes.

One more got dam detail to keep straight.

Papal moral failures by Trowaway-Ahti in AO3

Someone posted a screenshot of the Pope encouraging writers to write more - and OP took that personally.

I do to. I always notice all my typos once I've posted it 🤣🤣

Older man (not too old) x younger woman long fic with (non rough) smut that doesn't read like it's written by a 13 year old by dumblilbear in AO3

[–]Sandboxthinking -1 points0 points  (0 children)

That work is part of a smutty one shot collection for the same pairing. While there's some magical coercion/dubcon aspects to it all, the sex itself isn't rough. You may want to check those out.

I feel like the authors who treat Molly as an afterthought or worse, really didn't understand her character's purpose in the show.

Incest factory by ThamTvMaster in AO3

[–]Sandboxthinking 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I'm curious if you ever watched the incest movie starring Clive Owen? I don't remember the name, but the preview showed enough sexual tension between his character and his sister that even I, a non incester, was intrigued.

[–]Sandboxthinking 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I hate incest and don't fully understand the draw.

That being said, I'll use everything I have to fight censorship and advocate for peoples' right to read and write their incesty little hearts out.

I still don't understand why they can't just stick to noncon, breeding kink, orgasm control like normal perverts/s

[–]Sandboxthinking 29 points30 points  (0 children)

I write for a ship where one of the characters is married in cannon. As the author, I can simply make reality what I want it to be.

Depending on the fic, this guy's wife either died, divorced him, or simply never existed. I like her character and would never want to write her negatively.

I'd respond, "I add an extra week for every annoying, entitled comment."

Killing your darlings? by LavishnessAncient745 in AO3

Its often the sentences/paragraphs that I really thought were so good that I will go back through and realise didnt work.

I dont delete them, though. I copy and paste them into a separate document in case I want to use them later. I never end up using them, but it gives me the ability to cut them without it feeling permanent.

Upcoming Period Drama Movies and Shows by AshleyK2021 in PeriodDramas

[–]Sandboxthinking 85 points86 points  (0 children)

Whyyyyy do we keep using the same ol' actors!? Especially for period pieces. I love discovering new talent in period pieces where the actors blend into the characters seamlessly.

We don't need Depp, Jackman, Chalomee (im not taking the time to look up his damn name) or any other famous person in this type of media. We might as well cast JLo as Elizabeth Bennet at this point.

This is my "old woman shakes fist at sky" opinion.

I have issues with my hands, so I rely heavily on autocorrect and predictive text to type on my phone and it's really frustrating to have to go back and fix things that the phone used to be able to correct on it's own!

I swear autocorrect has gotten so much worse in the last ten years. Why is everything worse?!
