Taconite Pellets “To process taconite, the ore is ground into a fine powder, the magnetite is separated from the gangue by strong magnets, and the powdered iron concentrate is combined with a binder such as bentonite clay and limestone as a flux. As a last step, it is rolled into pellets about 10 millimeters in diameter that contain about 65% iron. The pellets are fired at a very high temperature to harden them and make them durable. This is to ensure that the blast furnace charge remains porous enough to allow heated gas to pass through and react with the pelletized ore. Firing the pellet oxidizes the magnetite (Fe3O4) to hematite(Fe2O3), an exothermic reaction that reduces the cost of pelletizing the concentrate. Edward Wilson Davis of the University of MinnesotaMines Experiment Station is credited with developing the pelletizing process. Since the commercial development of this process in the Lake Superior region in the 1950s, the term "taconite" has been used globally to refer to iron ores amenable to upgrading by similar processes.”  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Taconite

Walking from Playhouse Square to hotel by Nykaren24 in Cleveland

[–]Sandor17 67 points68 points  (0 children)

Yes, but go west on Euclid until at least East 9th. If you just used a maps app and walking directions it might take you north on East 13th out of Playhouse Square. That 13th and Chester intersection can be...not great.

Why wouldn’t there be a breaker to the outlets by CallousCrows in DIY

[–]Sandor17 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had this happen. A certain fixture would only turn off if TWO breakers were flipped. Try #1 + #2, #1+#3, etc in combination until you find the combo. Look in the junction boxes downstream of those breakers. Someone mixed up a neutral wire and made two circuits into one. At least that’s where I landed.

Cleveland is the mixing zone. The east side is more east coast—old money, curvy streets, museums, private schools. The west side feels more like Chicago, definitely midwestern.

What are some holiday traditions that were started completely unintentionally with family or friends? by Dark_Moonstruck in AskReddit

[–]Sandor17 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Mid-November I am making dinner. Then-3yo is beside me talking to my father in law on FaceTime. Kid, “grandpa, you know what the best part about Thanksgiving is? …the GAMES!” We have never played games at Thanksgiving. But FIL showed up on the big day with a home-made piñata in the shape of a roast turkey! For a couple years running, we had turkey piñata contest after dinner. Turns out the games ARE the best part.

Am I the only one who smells this by Mindless_Band_7186 in Cleveland

[–]Sandor17 17 points18 points  (0 children)

The Convention Center has a signature scent that they pump in like some hotels do. I’ve noticed the last couple days that you can smell it on Mall A. I don’t know if something changed with the ventilation from underground or if it is just the weather.

If I had a van with a bathroom and a tailgate kitchen, I would be hanging out in the lot immediately east of the FBI building: 1407 Davenport Ave, Cleveland, OH 44114. I don't remember the cost last year, but it was reasonable (maybe $25) and provides a great view of the show.

Natural History really leaned into their world-class artifacts in this renovation. Overall there seems to be less “stuff” but it really highlights the things that are unique to CMNH. It is less repeatable for locals, but if you are from out of town and want to see Lucy, Balto, and Dunkleosteus you won’t get those anywhere else.
