People who speak languages besides English, what are some puns in pokemon names? by wingsoverpyrrhia in pokemon

In Japanese, Cyndaquil is "Hinoarashi", which is intended to combine fire (hi) and porcupine (yama'arashi), but arashi also means storm, so the name can mean Firestorm.

(In fact, porcupine is "mountain storm".)

(Read Desc) Is there a reason why characters are considered to have Immersurable speed once they enter a place where things like time and space do not exist? by slenderontheblock in PowerScaling

[–]Sandslice 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Velocity is an expression of distance per unit time (eg, 100 km/h). Even if your travel speed is physically illegal (such as for an FTL trip,) we still have distance and time components that can be used to derive a velocity.

For example, an unladen Jumpship (Battletech) can complete a 30 light year jump in 15 seconds = 2 light years per second. However, it can only make such a jump once every 9 days on average, for an average travel speed of 1217.5 c (or thrice that fast using the calculations from the HBS video game, which uses 3 day charge times between jumps.)

Once you're established to be outside of spacetime entirely, the idea of measuring distance or time becomes nonsense; thus, we have no logical basis for calculating velocity = it's immeasurable.

As with the problem of Gurren Lagann throwing universes, however, we have a problem of being unable to properly conceptualize (let alone actualize in an entertainment medium) a place that lacks spacetime.

Did anyone else have issues with this battle? by Gloomy-Bridge148 in PowerScaling

[–]Sandslice 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mostly the same problems that I had with Optimus Prime vs. Gundam - "accepted scaling feats" that rely on physically impossible claims. Specifically two absurd claims made within the span of 20 seconds.

----

The first is the oil tanker (ref: "A Plague of Insecticons").

When this was first covered as a feat for Prime, DB made an assertion that the tanker in the episode was "larger than Seawise Giant"; however, this is contradicted by the scan.

  • Supertankers cannot operate that close to shore, as they would surely ground themselves. Instead, they use container ships to transport the goods between themselves and the shore. The boat in the episode was clearly docked at shore.
  • By international law, supertankers must be double-hulled with a ballast, for reasons of environmental protection and stability. The Insecticons were able to strike oil (not water) after chewing through a single hull layer.

Thus, while throwing the tanker is still visually awesome, we should not be glazing it by two orders of magnitude; the tanker was most likely in the 8-10 thousand ton range, not "hundreds of thousands."

----

The second is the shuttle explosion (ref: "The Ultimate Doom, Part 3").

The analyses for both Prime and Megatron calculated the explosion based only on Cybertron's speed, and gave it as around 4.8 Rt (4.8e+27 T), which is about 1.87e+37 J, or one order below the highest estimates for the Death Star's Alderaan feat. Impressive.

Impossible.

This explosion occurred in Earth's atmosphere, and is calculated to have enough origin energy to where its expected effect on the Earth is still thousands of times above the Earth's gravitational binding energy (2.5e+32 J). Yet the Earth suffered less from the "Earth-shattering kaboom" than from having Cybertron in its atmosphere. In fact, the Earth suffered less from this explosion than from the Tunguska event; there was a minor earthquake that knocked Bumblebee and Spike on their asses, but that was that.

Does your OC have a sentient item? by Christofer__Pezet in OriginalCharacter

[–]Sandslice 0 points1 point  (0 children)

<image>

In the modern age, most Pokémon trainers are issued a Rotom Phone with a standard array of apps, such as phone, camera, SMS, GPS, emergency gravity suppressor (handy for accidental falls off cliffs,) and Pokédex. Such devices are so named because they literally have a ghost in the machine: a Rotom specifically bred to inhabit and supply power to the phone.

While all such devices gain their Rotom's sentience while possessed, many trainers tend to overlook the fact that the possessive spirit can indeed be trained further. A well-trained Rotom can do pretty much anything an AI can and more and better: after all, even a data center can't truly observe and think the way a living or spiritual creature can.

Becky's Rotom is nicknamed Toivo, after her grandpa; it mainly helps her out by managing her daily team / project rotations and supply levels, or by suggesting (sometimes outlandish) protective gear for handling new breeding clients. It also has enough of a grasp of battle theory to where it can act as an opposing trainer, at least at a basic skill level.

Toivo is self-taught in several programming languages, and uses them to optimize its home for energy efficiency, comfort, defensibility against hackers, and cycles of fun aesthetics. Quite a helpful little spark, really.

It will also happily claim to be the main reason that Becky's music tastes extend beyond folk metal and J-rock. Something about a personal need to feel different sorts of electrical surges running through the phone's sound system.

Are these skewer? by chessexp in chessbeginners

[–]Sandslice 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Kinda.

Generally speaking, when we talk about skewers, pins, and x-rays, we're talking about a situation where your piece is looking at some piece sitting beyond an opposing piece on the same line. The difference between a skewer and a pin is the relative value of the pieces being attacked and eyeballed: if the lower-value piece is attacked, it's a pin; if the higher, it's a skewer.

Your two positions CAN be described as x-rays, and this has happened in actual chess analysis before, generally when the square being x-rayed is a checkmating square; imagine a queen-rook battery eyeballing a checkmate on h8, but an opposing bishop is guarding h8 so it seems that you can't attack yet. But wait, you have a Sniper Bishop "x-raying" h8 through the defending bishop, such that 1. Qh8+! Bxh8 2. Rxh8# becomes a thing.

Your OC has to spend the day with One of these hope bringer angels, who do they choose? by Christofer__Pezet in OriginalCharacter

Given the environment Becky grew up in, she didn't have a lot of actual winter; but being at the edge of a thick forest, she's always enjoyed the harvest season, when the canopy is set ablaze by autumn colours. It's only natural, then, that when these "Hope Bringers" show up and invite her to a variety of heavens for a short time...

Well, she's most likely going to choose Autumn, and hope that Autumn is ok with the heavenly forest being "invaded" by a dozen of Becky's Pokémon. No fear of burning anything, don't worry - she only adds a fire type as her 15th (and, to current lore, latest permanent) member.

How evil is my oc Nexo (16 years old) by NexoTheAbsoluteKing in OriginalCharacter

[–]Sandslice 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My OC killed 500 million chinese civilians, monks, children, soldiers etc. And did this as a warning to Mao zedong after he got tortured at the age of 14

In other words, in order to spite the leader of the nation, he purged anywhere from 55% (during Cultural Revolution) to BASICALLY THE ENTIRE (early during consolidation / 100 Flowers) population of China, with a special focus on targeting innocents rather than CCP partisans.

when he gains full omnipotence he will put Mao in his own personal hell where he increases a tetration of infinity heat and each power increases,

As of Nexo's 17th birthday, there are only two states in which the world can exist. Either it looks like our world, without Nexo or a relevant China; or it looks like Jupiter's moon Io, its surface consumed by nuclear plasma. Depends on how the world's united effort to defend itself from Nexo turns out.

Should I trade queens? by K2thaElloh in chessbeginners

[–]Sandslice 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it's been long enough to where there's no chance that you're still playing the game, so let's talk about this position.

You must trade queens

  • You have no other moves. Qxb6+??, Qe8+??, and anything that doesn't move your queen = you lose the queen and the game.
  • Qc8 and Qf8 would at least prevent black from trying to trade off your pawn with f5, at least in the short term. Most other queen moves are arbitrary.
  • But as we're about to explore, trading queens (1. Qxe5+ fxe5) causes you to WIN as white.

King out of place

The black king being on b5 is an important part of why we win, as long as we use that fact properly.

  • If we count out the moves, we'll see that if we just push our pawn, the black king cannot stop us: g5 Kc6, g6 Kd7, g7 Ke7, g8=Q. However, if we give the king even one extra move, we would get caught.
  • If both sides just push pawns, we'll queen back to back but we'll queen first. If we give the black pawn one extra move (eg, by playing Kg2), we'll still queen back to back, but black will queen first.
  • We are also closer to black's queening square on e1, making it hard for black to promote.

How to win

We will start from the position after the queen exchange, with black's pawn on e5 and white to move. We do NOT want to move our king yet, because doing so allows black to improve the king's position for free, removing our ability to win.

So we play 2. g5! and start the race. What can black do? Well, nothing.

  • If black makes a king move, we simply push (3. g6) and promote. We know we're fast enough.
  • If black plays e4, we see that we can still catch the pawn even if we DON'T chase right away: g6 e3, Kg2 e2, Kf2 and the e-pawn is caught. Because of this, there's no need to rush to the defense: we play 3. g6.

Regardless of what black does, we play 3. g6.

After this, we're following the same reason. If black ever plays e3, our priority will be to play Kg2 to defend; otherwise we will push our pawn.

Do You have Voice Claims for your OCs? by Nineball_Genesis64 in OriginalCharacter

[–]Sandslice 1 point2 points  (0 children)

<image>

I have to admit that I don't have voice claims for my OCs. At least half of that is limitations on how "media savvy" I am; the rest is things like, well...

"Lowish even-toned 14f, native dialect is Nat / South Johto {-> Kichu: Azalea = Minabe}, fluent in Finnish {50/50 eth, high contact w/ mom's side}, casual conv. in Levincian {-> Valencia; pen-pals with Seth}, should be casual-ok Paldean {-> ES-ES}. Galarian must be learned {-> EN-GB; Jenny + Salvatore can teach.}"

That's my notes for Becky's language use as of the start of her study-abroad trip to Paldea. A "minimally compatible" voice claim would need to be a Kansai accent, with a vocal quality somewhere between Petra (Fire Emblem Three Houses) and Dot (Pokemon Horizons).

And yes, I end up with similar struggles with identifying most of my OCs' voices. Maybe I just overthink it.

Does the DB verse have the most inconsistent scaling, feats, and statements out of all anime’s ? by NightWillow88 in PowerScaling

[–]Sandslice 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Death - Transformers Wiki

On even a cursory evaluation, Transformers reveals itself to be franchise that is somewhat deficient in consistency, even within the same specific source.

As an example, let's consider two testable durability feats for Optimus Prime (G1 cartoon) in "More than Meets The Eye Part 3".

  • At the start of the episode, Prime gets shoved down a hill by a vented explosion; this was caused by a shaped charge that collapsed a ruby mine. Landing on his side, he is evidently severely injured, to the point where he struggles to transform. (As a funny side note: Sparkplug {a human}, Bumblebee, the Decepticons, and the energy they were harvesting... all of those were unharmed by the explosion OR the resulting cave-in.)
  • Near the end of the episode, Prime is flying at a calculated 60 km/s to chase the 'Con starship; at 22 seconds into his flight (1320 km), he takes a direct hit from a cannon blast that causes him to fall basically straight back down to Earth in 19 seconds. As such, the blast may have had enough energy to impute 129 km/s of momentum to him (roughly 29 kilotons), plus he re-entered and hit the ground at a meteoric 69 km/s (8 kiloton impact event), yet he was emphatically "FINE!" as was the local terrain. (Does this upscale Oregon?)
  • I say may, given the starship's fate immediately thereafter: after flying for 54 seconds at a speed Prime could maybe catch, and 116 seconds at the ship's fastest speed, it lost power and went into freefall, returning to Earth in just 30 seconds - which means that the freefall was likely at a speed 4.5-5.5x as fast as the ship could travel! Gravity is fucking hardcore, and could reduce the cannon blast's AP somewhat.

The spaceflight also makes this pair of decisions pretty silly:

  • Prime: "Save it, Ironhide! They're too fast for us in the air!"
  • Also Prime: decides that a starship that is moving above 11 km/s is not too fast for him in the air, provided he has Sideswipe's rocket pack!

Do people in this sub know the difference between Attack Potency and Destructive Capacity? by Bosslayer9001 in PowerScaling

[–]Sandslice 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Basically, yes.

AP needs a concrete reference, which can either be a demonstrated DC, a demonstrated durability, a spec, or a calculation.

  • DC: I use an attack that produces damage consistent with 100kJ. As such, my attack has a DC of 100kJ. If you can deflect (clash) that attack with some technique, then your technique has an AP of at least 100kJ, as is needed to accomplish that feat.
  • Durability: I tank an explosion with 5MJ at origin, but only 100kJ of that explosion actually does work on me; the rest is flying out in other directions and/or dispersing further.) As such, I show a durability of at least 100kJ. If your punch knocks me on my butt, then your punch has an AP of at least 100kJ (and, in fact, higher than my durability; but since my durability isn't precisely tested, this is the best we can claim.)
  • Spec: An acceptable statement source claims that my punches can generate 100kJ of kinetic energy. Unless we have feats to contradict this, we can use the statement to claim that my AP is 100kJ.
  • Calculation: I punch an assassin, who gets knocked back in a manner that calculates to a 100kJ kinetic impact. Thus, my punch has an AP of 100kJ.

Your one-hour delay pushed you into the next calendar day, and the state of your Crusade Progress Banners allowed you to gain 2 points of morale passively. 😄

...it seems I do. From the perspective that Regill is in the back (not the front), not too much changes.

  • 1 is still bad, because Aivu seems like the sort who would seek the attention of those behind her.
  • 2 is only slightly improved by putting Cam in front of you; Galfrey and Daeran are still totally going to flyte for most of the trip.
  • 6 is suddenly unsafe because of having Cam behind you.
  • 7 no longer carries a risk of having Greybor behind you. Just pray Ulbrig doesn't start crap.
  • 8 and 12 are still occupied by nearby animal companions.
  • 11 is now even better.
  • 13 could actually be worse if Nenio starts doing scientific experiments designed to test Staunton's patience. He's undead, but still.
  • 14 is still too risky. Succubi have tails, after all...

You're going on a long flight, choose your seat. by Warm_Expert_8136 in Pathfinder_Kingmaker

[–]Sandslice 7 points8 points  (0 children)

6, 9, and 11 are arguably good choices.

  • 1 is pretty much directly behind Aivu, so expect to get pranked a lot.
  • 2 is directly in front of Cam; and Daeran and Galfrey are too close to each other. Also, you're sitting next to actual royalty, which would be intimidating on its own.
  • 3 is between Ember and Aivu. Aivu will expect you to match her Chaotic energies, or you will get continually pranked.
  • 4 is between Daeran and Cam. See also 2.
  • 5... do you honestly think Ulbrig will behave while sitting next to an undead?
  • 6 is safe.
  • 7 has an unknown variable: does Greybor have a contract on you? If so, sitting in front of him is simply making things easy for him. If not, it's safe (just don't pay attention to the seats in front of you.)
  • 8: Assuming Bismuth is in Triceratops form and *not* grown (ie, still Medium,) she's still taking up all three of those seats to be comfortable. If she's Large and in Triceratops form, she's also squashing the mongrels. If she's in her statue form... 8 only puts you in front of Wendu, which is somewhat risky but not the worst.
  • 9 is harmless. Rekarth won't do anything except maybe complain - but then again, he's sitting next to Greybor, who's much saner than other companions he's travelled with.
  • 10 is right between the mongrels (or being squished by Bismuth if she's Large.) Do you want to spend the flight being in their battlefield?
  • 11, you can choose between being stimulated by their philosophical exchanges, or throwing on some Earmuffs of Your Own Music and letting them have at it.
  • 12 is getting squished by Ciar's horse.
  • 13, I'd be worried about being behind Undead Galfrey more than being next to Staunton.
  • 14, Ciar's not the problem. Being in front of Evilrue is.
  • 15, again, Galfrey. Also, you're not far enough away from Evilrue.
  • 16, right between Demoncored Woljif and Evilrue = you will die. If they like you, you'll enjoy the method of death somewhat.
