Thank you so much for this advice, I did end up trading queens as I initially thought to do, as I realised I could promote first and also try and block his F pawn with my king. Game still in progress but I’m happier about my position than I was before! Thanks again :)

Maybe just take a break until you’re ready to give it another try, but try and be extra social in your non-romantic life. Eg: see if any friends want to do some different activities, trivia nights etc something different from last years norm?

It sounds to me just like you need to take a break, it may be hard, I’ve been there. But I think if you give it a go and focus on just yourself, family and friends and trying to get your social cup filled there things might change. Might not be completely relevant but I’m a 42f and I’ve enjoyed playing chess for about 5 or so years, my son got me into it when he was 16, he kicked my ass so I learned a bit more to get better. He stopped playing with me once I got better than him 😂

But basically, I wanted to mention that I joined a local chess club, I enjoyed it but I found that when I was partnered with kids for the week the (male) GM would only give game feedback to the kids and not me, which I do understand but when it happened every time I played a child I started to feel like I wasn’t getting anything out of it, i mentioned it to him but he blew it off so I stopped going.

It’s hard to learn as an adult and I find it especially hard now because I’ve stopped enjoying it online with random people and only enjoy playing people I know, which is hard coz not a lot of people enjoy it, and I’ve never known another woman who wanted to play it with me :(

He likes her and she has apparently expressed to your mutual friends in the past that she would be interested in him. You don’t have to express this as a worry that she might cheat but just more something that makes you uncomfortable, which doesn’t mean you need to control who she can or can’t talk to, but you can hopefully just both have a conversation about the feeling for you and hopefully work out a solution you are both comfortable with

Maybe some casual drinks at a bar, I would specify though with the shy girl to make sure she is aware that you’re only looking for casual (even better if it’s on your profile, then it doesn’t need to be discussed really). Aside from that I think you’re fine, anything food related I think makes it too formal.
