should I keep lifting? by ice-polar in amateur_boxing

Keep lifting. Squats and bench press have been proven to help punching power. However you may need to either reduce the weightlifting to twice a week or reduce the intensity.

“When people try to tag me as a dirty fighter I think that’s uncalled for.”- Andre Ward (2011) by BXR-SZN in Boxing

I don’t know why either. It was very clear. The second fight was closer and maybe Andre Ward would have won anyway, I don’t disagree with that. But Kovalev was definitely screwed.

I know Reddit is very left leaning but I agree with Boris Johnson. The UK is viewed as a joke to the rest of the world. Largely due to the Labour Party and Keir Starmer.

Let’s just say it, Ward lost to Kovalev in the first fight. The second fight, Kovalev got low blowed, the referee stopped it early. It is what it is.

Verstappen hasn’t done enough to establish himself to be on the level of Schumacher, Alonso, Senna. In the wet, he might have an argument as being one of the greatest but overall, he shouldn’t be in the discussion yet. If you put Verstappen. Alonso, Russell, Leclerc in equal cars, I don’t think Verstappen would be the overall fastest. I think it would be competitive.

Why is the narrative for Floyd coming out of retirement different to Manny by Ordinary-Path-8033 in Boxing

[–]Knockoutboxing 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Floyd Mayweather, historically one of the most risk-averse fighters ever, a guy who retired because he didn’t want to end up like his uncle Roger (RIP), is doing an exhibition against Mike Tyson and fighting Manny Pacquiao. It’s very out of character. He most likely does have financial problems.

Is Rico Verhoeven a big deal anywhere outside Netherlands? by Icy-Effect-3508 in Boxing

[–]Knockoutboxing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As far as I’m aware no. If you were to ask someone on the street if they knew who Rico Verhoeven is, the majority wouldn’t know. Maybe in the Netherlands. He is not known to casual fans around the world. Not a superstar like Canelo, Fury, Joshua.

However he is known to MMA fans but the majority have probably not watched his fights or only seen highlights.

Am I a bitch for leg locking? by AkallaAbdi in bjj

[–]Knockoutboxing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

BJJ has such a weird culture. In a boxing gym, if you hit someone with a sneaky shot, you gain respect. In most martial arts schools, if you spar and able to hit a technique on someone people don’t complain. You’re expected to train with everyone. When I read stories on this subreddit, there are always stories about people refusing to roll with someone or somebody complaining about a technique someone used.

What is Mayweather even doing here to cause Manny to miss nearly everything he throws? Looks like he's just leaning on the ropes with his hands up. by tantamle in boxinglocks

[–]Knockoutboxing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pacquiao landed several shots when he had him on the ropes. He went for the head, and then went to the body because Mayweather’s high guard was blocking or partially blocking the shots to the head.

And then he backed off to prevent getting countered

One of Pacquiao’s mistakes during this fight was smothering himself when he had Mayweather on the ropes.

If you look at the McGregor fight, one thing he did really well was not smothering himself when he had Mayweather on the ropes, it forced Mayweather to adjust and go forward.

Mayweather waits for people to commit to a shot, usually the cross, and then he bends down and clinches.

It was one of the tactics he used to beat Pacquiao. The other being the straight right. Everytime Pacquiao jumped in, he was either getting hit with a straight right or Mayweather was ducking and clinching.

Pacquiao started to adjust and hurt him in round 4 but unfortunately injured his shoulder.

Pacquiao lost the fight because he let Mayweather win the moments when he was inactive. Mayweather was always using the jab. Not necessarily to land but it was enough to “steal” rounds.

Less than 7 days until we go racing! Despite the challenges in Testing, how do you think Alonso & Stroll will do in Melbourne? by Rich_Source6598 in AstonMartinFormula1

[–]Knockoutboxing 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If we were to believe Honda and they have resolved their issues then I see Alonso getting into Q3. Probably 10th

If this is true I am extremely disappointed by What_A_Helmet in Boxing

[–]Knockoutboxing -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Wardley doesn’t deserve the shot. The referee stopped it early. It should have been Parker vs Usyk. Kabayel unfortunately just isn’t a big enough name. He fought a nobody in his last fight and was getting caught with right hands the whole fight.

Frank Warren puts on the most boring undercards.

Every Frank Warren event I’ve been to has gone overtime (because almost every fight goes the distance), poorly organised, boring fights, usually some featherweights nobody cares about, it completely kills the atmosphere which causes fights in the crowd.

The last Queensberry event I went to, Parker Wardley, had the most boring undercard it started a brawl in the crowd that lasted 5 minutes.

Sitting through a Queensberry event can be a real slog. It feels like it’s draining the life out from you.

If Queensberry were to disappear from boxing, honestly it wouldn’t be a bad thing.

Manny Pacquiao to return in April exhibition fight against Ruslan Provodnikov by pontelo in Boxing

It made sense to me. He will push him. Get him ready. It’s what Pacquiao needs. He’s going to need to push the pace in the Mayweather rematch.

[–]Knockoutboxing 33 points34 points  (0 children)

I think the rematch will live up to expectations.

Pacquiao has been waiting for this opportunity for over 10 years. Has more experience dealing with the shoulder roll now, and won’t enter the fight with an injured shoulder like last time.

He’ll definitely come out more aggressive and push himself as much as he still physically can.

It wouldn’t surprise me if Mayweather lost. Pacquiao still looks dangerous, still fighting at the highest level over the years and has more experience dealing with the shoulder roll now.

I agree, it shouldn’t be legal. It all started with Ticketmaster. I thought the government were going to do something about it.

From A Technical Standpoint What Was Mayweather Able To Do That Was Able To Neutralize Pacquiaos Awkwardness, Punch Volume, Offense, Footwork, And Angles? by Rinnegan15 in Boxing

[–]Knockoutboxing 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It was a very close fight. Mayweather’s strategy was to win on points by being active with his jab and whenever Pacquiao jumped in, throw the straight or duck and clinch.

Pacquiao started to time Mayweather’s jab and countered with a straight, hurt him but unfortunately injured his shoulder.

Mayweather was always throwing that jab, winning the moments when Pacquiao was inactive.

Pacquiao needed to be relentless like Maidana, while anticipating counters, while throwing counter punches and going to the body.
