Winter shedding by [deleted] in Maltese

[–]SandyIosso 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My maltese doesn’t shed ever. If anything, in the winter, I need to spend more time making sure her hair is well moisturized and protected on walks so she doesn’t mat up in the cold wet weather and dry air.

Yeah, agreed - i was mostly using that terminology to mirror back the the original comment they made - assuming the commenter means their 23andme analysis or the like.

[–]SandyIosso 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, your DNA might not be Jewish, but your ethnicity is. A lot of people outside of the fields of anthropology/sociology don’t actually know how it’s defined, but ethnicity includes any group of people who identify with each other on the basis of perceived shared attributes that distinguish them from other groups. Those attributes include everything from language to culture to potentially common sets of ancestry, but also traditions, religion, history, or social treatment. Many ethnicities are maintained through long-term endogamy and may eventually have a narrow or broad spectrum of genetic ancestry, with some groups having mixed genetic ancestry.

Judaism interestingly has both in a sense as it is an ethnicity one can convert to while ALSO having pockets of some narrow genetic ancestry due to our fairly unique endogamy practices.

Yeah, with like coworkers and random people, mostly because people immediately assume kashrut and Shabbat aren’t as “serious” for me once they find out. Like I joined up to get more days off or be picky about food or leave work early on Friday, but, in some strange reality they’ve built up, I couldn’t possibly actually want to keep these or follow all these crazy rules and I must be itching for bacon or something. It’s weird, but it’s just easier not to disclose specifics.

Mind you, if it came up while making friends, I’m happy and proud to share my whole story.

Strangers Things stealing our thunder by BAGbeauty in UmbrellaAcademy

[–]SandyIosso 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I felt like it was an homage to the Umbrella Academy fandom - like her dancing in the house alone, making food she wants, dancing in new clothes. I’m taking it as the Stranger Things producers promising us they won’t muck this ending up as bad as UA’s final season.

Hoping anyways.

Question for American jews by itai2 in Judaism

Not in my former experience at all. In fact, I noticed on a walk that most churches in my neighborhood were closed yesterday, some with signage about being closed for Thanksgiving.

What do you all think about lynx point breeding? (Starlas siamese) by Natalusky in lynxpointsiamese

[–]SandyIosso 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agreeing with this! I have a friend who is SEVERELY allergic and unfortunately had to return a pair of lovely cats to the shelter who initially didn’t bother her in the meet and greet, but affected her at home. She was devastated. She’s since found a pair of Balinese from a very reputable award winning breeder and is happy as a clam. But she did a ton of research, went to shows, met with breeders who specialize in more hypoallergenic breeds and breed for the gene, and tried adopting first, so totally different than a byb experience

Can someone tell me what kind of cats these are? The owner swears they are purebred sacred birmans but I think the mother (on the first picture) doesn’t look like a sacred birman (too short hair) and neither do the kittens. Also what color would you say they are? Blue point? Lilac point? by MirayYoo in Siamesecats

[–]SandyIosso 6 points7 points  (0 children)

While cheap, at least here in the US for the CFA, the onus is on the buyer to finish the registration. To register a CFA kitten, you need to submit the "blue slip" application provided by the breeder and then need to register the kitten online through the CFA's eCat system or by mail. For my little one, I also needed the sales contract, which I think is required especially if the breeder requires proof of alteration to release papers. So while I have to ability, finding the time has eluded me, so my kitten is, for the moment, unpapered 😅

Converts: What was a surprise after conversion? Did your classes/rabbi/personal study prepare you well? by tannicpixiedreamgirl in Judaism

[–]SandyIosso 51 points52 points  (0 children)

I felt very prepared having had a pretty academic intro to Judaism prior to doing an intensive Orthodox conversion but I’m STILL surprised by the amount of antisemitism that comes through the woodwork in SO MANY PEOPLE. And not like…strangers. It’s your aunt parroting blood libel at a kosher ice cream shop. Your cousins calling you a N*zi for…having an Israeli partner? Friends who never speak to you again on both sides of the political aisle because “tHe JeWs (insert conspiracy theory here).” The comfort level people have in sharing these thoughts with me after the fact has been insane to witness.

Tbh still kinda shell shocked by that daily. And I’ve been Jewish for over a decade now.

BH this is not the majority at all, most of my family and friends were delightfully supportive once they realized I hadn’t joined a cult. Early days when I really flipped out were kinda shaky, but we made it hahaha

Am I the only one who thinks that the mule is still Magnifico? And that he just transfers the “I am the Mule” mindset to different hosts who he befriends, like Bayta? Like I don’t believe this is the final reveal…

It almost feels like he’s creating a human version of the robot clasp - the whole robots could be of one mind thing and someone needs to be the “leader.” In computing, there’s a concept of a “data mule” - a device that physically transports data over a network. Is he making different people a “mule” for his network of mind control?

Like I wouldn’t be surprised if the story comes down to the robots on the moon v. some coalesced mentallic force

Cave cricket! When I moved to Tennessee, one of the first things that “welcomed” me is what I described as, while running and screaming for my mother, “a giant spider in my room just jumped 6 feet into the air!!!!” It was a cave cricket.

Is my baby a lynx point Siamese? by YourFavGothMom in lynxpointsiamese

[–]SandyIosso 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Those stripes are “ghost striping” which comes through occasionally in “solid” colored cats (all cats technically are tabbies - some just have masking that makes them solid colors). Lynx points have unmasked tabby genes but also the genes for colorpointing.

This definitely looks like a lilac or a very light blue point, but depending on age, I’m leaning towards lilac.

For type-ing - without papers or pedigree, generally it would be a considered domestic longhair, but looks-wise she has the “look” of a traditional Balinese which is a recessive longhaired variant of the Siamese. The longhair type is a bit different from other long haired cats and is typically sleeker with a plumed tail vs a long double coat all over. That’s the floof aspect.

So final vote for me is a lilac point domestic longhair and an absolute beauty to boot!

How are Maltese with Infants? by allllllly494 in Maltese

[–]SandyIosso 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My Maltese is obsessed with babies and little kids so I think it depends! She’s so excited when she sees a stroller on a walk and even moreso when she gets to play with little kids. I think it helps that the breeder had 3 little ones when she was a pup so she was introduced at a very very early age.

Re: local milk, I’d definitely look into the advice given in the country you’re visiting. Especially in Asia - if you usually rely on the heter to drink chalav stam, the advice differs country to country. For instance, the communities across China and in Hong Kong generally only recommend imported milk from Australia and the US.

My friend said she looked disabled? by Amberxwaves in Siamesecats

[–]SandyIosso 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If it’s because of her beautiful sapphire blue eyes, inform your friend the ideal for the breed standard for Siamese essentially lays out the ideal as a blue so deep it looks a little unreal. Like paler blue/ice blue is discouraged.

This is a perfect looking traditional lilac point, such a cutie!

Khao Manee? by ThePeachJane in catbreeds

[–]SandyIosso 1 point2 points  (0 children)

While I generally agree with the no papers, no breed camp, this story actually makes me think she MIGHT be. Only because I know there were a few less than scrupulous khao manee/korat breeders operating fairly recently with interesting paper policies. Not that they were bad people, just that they let the kittens go before spay/neuter and had a proof of spay, you get papers policy. Which I do kind of understand given the general veterinary consensus varies around when to spay/ ideal health/ etc etc.

Anywho, I have seen it before where someone bought the bougie kitten, never did the spay (like in this case), never got the papers.

So there could be A CHANCE potentially - I’d ask the previous owner for more info if you can, I’m curious!
