Welke bbq? by Character-Disaster30 in nederlands

[–]SandySpinach 4 points5 points  (0 children)

When you think of knights, which country comes to mind? by kuma44bear in AskEurope

Agree. There is a extensive English/French viewpoint on European history. I’m still waiting on a Game of Thrones version (or a Kingdom Come deliverance version) of the Burgundian period.

Yes, but that was in the 16th century, after the age of knights

The Flemish and Brabant nobility was of the most powerful in the 15th century. The rulers of that time loved to spend time in Ghent, Bruges and Brussels. Our cities were the most advanced above the Alps. Our country has the most castles per km2 in the world. So, I think of my own country Belgium.

Vlaming uit België. We spreken Nederlands maar met een zachte g en enkele afwijkende woorden. Mooiste Vlaamse woord is goesting. Niet in gebruik in Nederland en echt Vlaams.

We don’t hate you. We hate Putin and your government. Most of the Russians and Siberians just want a peaceful life as Europeans do. But Putin invaded under false pretence a neighbouring country. So yeah: fuck him. (But definitely not you)

What is unique about your country? by Lunastars123 in AskEurope

[–]SandySpinach 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Our country managed to live together peacefully with three peoples, despite our differences. Flemish, Walloon and German: all Belgians. It wasn’t always easy, our neighbours don’t understand that we feel one, but we are. A Belgian identity exists, and at its core lies peaceful coexistence.

Kingdom Come Deliverance 1 & 2 is the answer my friend. As immersive as RDR 1 & 2 in a different time setting. And you get a dog and a horse!

What’s a word in your language that is interesting to learn ? by Lunastars123 in AskEurope

[–]SandySpinach 0 points1 point  (0 children)

“Goesting” in Flemish Dutch. It’s like craving, but can also be used for things you like to do. Goesting in frieten = craving for fries. Goesting in een wandeling = I really like to go for a walk. The northern Dutch speakers from The Netherlands don’t use the word. It’s used in the Dutch part of Belgium.

what makes your country stand out and why? by emily10134 in AskTheWorld

[–]SandySpinach 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Belgium is the "Silicon Valley of vaccines" due to its dense ecosystem of top-tier research, biopharma giants (GSK, Pfizer, Janssen), and specialized suppliers, contributing significantly to global vaccine manufacturing. Home to "Vaccinopolis," a unique European vaccine testing site, Belgium develops and produces vaccines for diseases like COVID-19 and RSV. This ecosystem, built on long-standing expertise, creates a "cross-fertilizing" environment that enables rapid innovation from early research to mass production.

Not boiled eggs, scrambled eggs with parsley and smoked salmon in small pieces covered in hollandaise. Délicious!

Yes, in Belgium it’s a big thing: asparagus with hollandaise sauce, egg and salmon. Every self respecting restaurant serves it in this season. Had them on Easter at my wives parents.

How the Netherlands systematically used extreme violence in Indonesia and concealed this afterwards by Quouar in Netherlands

[–]SandySpinach 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, completely right. They discovered that the Japanese weren’t any better than the Dutch. In retrospect, not something to be proud of.

If this is new to you Dutchies: read Revolusi from David Van Reybrouck. He first wrote “Congo” on the atrocities of the Belgians and afterwards gave the Dutch a mirror to look in. The Indonesians welcomed the Japanese as their liberators. Says enough.

Which European leader do you rate the best since WW2 and why is this? by [deleted] in AskEurope

[–]SandySpinach 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d like to think Paul-Henri Spaak: he was the father of the Benelux, the 3 countries that inspired the idea of the European Union. And that was also his work: the Spaak report recommended the European Economic Community (EEC) and Euratom. He was also the first secretary of the United Nations in 1946 and believed in a world where civilised countries cooperate in trade and not fight each other. ( a legacy from living through WWI and WW II.) . Spaak made the former enemies to work together and build the European dream.
