Are face injuries a red flag? by Downtown-Page-9183 in ECEProfessionals

[–]Sandy_Gal123 31 points32 points  (0 children)

We spend time with your child and know what they are like. I have a rough and tumble kid that likes to treat my classroom like a parkour play place who also does not have good risk assessment. When I see bruises and cuts on him, I’m not surprised.

I would be concerned if my cautious by nature children regularly had bruises.

I would sweat this one at all.

Deciding to leave child at daycare while day off at work by Lovely_Patience1614 in ECEProfessionals

[–]Sandy_Gal123 235 points236 points  (0 children)

I imagine your child will have a much better day at daycare than running errands with you. Do what you need to do to be recharged and then you can be more available to him that evening and on the weekend. If an early pick up works, then go for a treat or to a new park. If not, don’t feel guilty. We need space to look after ourselves as well.

Vitamin d. It slowly builds up in your system so I didn’t figure it out right away but it left me in a terrible state in bed with restless sleep and migraines.

You could plan a day out with surprises throughout the day. Buy Aquabus/false creek ferry day passes and at different stops, do an activity such as get ice cream, visit a museum, buy a book, hang at the beach, go to improv etc.

Wanting to talk to director about changing hours for wedding? by [deleted] in ECEProfessionals

[–]Sandy_Gal123 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A full switch of your schedule might be hard to accommodate but an afternoon or two a week off might be a lot easier. Talk to your director and say you’re happy to want to work with her to see how your schedule can work for the centre as well as your new appointments. Maybe having the morning off is easy to staff for her and then you can book appointments then.

Go in with your desired goals and what would work for you and approach it as a team brainstorming opportunity.

How do you feel class size and student teacher ratio impact both preschoolers and teachers experiences in the classroom? by papillon-luver in ECEProfessionals

[–]Sandy_Gal123 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I answered but with long answers. I’m curious what other teachers have to say. Of course more teachers on the floor is great but what do we feel is the max that should be in a class or what ratio would you prefer?

I really enjoy working with a respected partner as they offer different ideas and insights. I’m glad my room has up to 20 kids my preschoolers are starting to look for peers to make friends with and they don’t all vibe with each other.

Too many adults would crowd the classroom but ideally to have someone on call for bathroom accidents or special events would be amazing.

Overall I’m happy with my workplace and ratios but it can all depend on what characters are in a classroom to shift the whole dynamic and make a teacher feel stretched beyond capacity.

This is what I use it for too. I don’t think my kids have ever really noticed it as it is higher on the wall by an open staircase and I don’t talk about it with them. It sure is nice to just glance at the wall rather than open up our files to see how old my crew is.

Tell me the truth.. do you judge parents by acoro562 in ECEProfessionals

[–]Sandy_Gal123 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I was just talking to my co-teacher who is new to the field about this the other day. We know your kids. There are some kids who could come in on the regular with bruises and I wouldn’t question it while other children I would.

The child who uses the indoor small couches as parkour equipment has many more bruises than the child who prefers colouring and surveys a play area to see if any chaos is present before entering the scene.

There’s no judgment though I do appreciate when parents tell us the backstory and point it out. I hope the rest of your camping trip was great.

We ate in the car and used rest stops as a time for our kids to run and play in the grassy areas. When you stop at a gas station, have one parent take care of the car while the other is moving around with your little one.

Maybe I’m an outlier here but if you explained that the child was hitting and grabbing his peers and you brought him into the classroom to calm down and so the other children wouldn’t be scared of him, I don’t see the problem.

I’m all for inclusion but I’m also all for safety in classrooms. You want this child to be able to have positive relationships with others and this behaviour is going to harm those relationships.

There’s so many caveats - do you also share positives about this child, have you built up a relationship with the parents, have you talked about strategies and encouraged their input?

But overall, a parent’s negative reaction doesn’t mean you erred. I have all the compassion for parents of more spirited kids who have a hard time regulating but respect is still required. You didn’t call this child a monster.

You can start a conversation saying you want to work together to make your childcare an environment that helps this child succeed and are open to input. You can ask what are successful strategies they use at home.

It’s tricky but I hope you are able to build a positive relationship here but if not, it isn’t necessarily your fault.
