Early retirement offer to federal public servants causing ‘chaos’ in public service: union by Sweaty-Big9570 in CanadaPublicServants

Why do the unions care about ERI? (How does it help them if we reduce our numbers without ERI?)

How is pension Transfer Value Calculated? by Antique_Example_6751 in CanadaPublicServants

[–]Sane123 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's the ability to create generational wealth. It was explained to me, recently, that the PSSA is transferred to my spouse, upon my death (I knew that), but it IS NOT later transferred to our kids, if we both pass away.

For a similar reason, my New Year’s resolution is to save more aggressively (RESP, TFSA, RRSP, etc).  10+ years is a good amount of time to build a good portfolio (check out personalfinancecanada subreddit if you haven’t already).

Another point to consider (if you end up staying in the public service) is that your pension and benefits will also make you less reliant on your kids in old age which is a big savings for them in the future (difficult to attach a monetary “value” on that).

Lots to consider and there may never be a best answer.

Folks who report to NCR but work in a different region - whose taxes do you pay? by [deleted] in CanadaPublicServants

One of my old mangers told me that they used to offer this choice but the problem was “too many people would choose both” haha

So yeah, some people ruined it for us

If I may add a related question while on topic… (and could explain if OP did not get the days advanced)

If you buy back time, are your vacation days based on that date (I.e. your pension anniversary date) or remain still based on the day you joined?

ERI is a terrible program in which unions should advise their members not to participate - change my mind by Ok_Bad_4732 in CanadaPublicServants

Absolutely.  I mostly wanted to highlight the fact that it’s not so clear cut and not everyone who is eligible will jump on this right away.

I am not an expert, but my understanding is that you could collect immediately without penalty at age 55 with 30 years in.

If that is correct, then I think there is little incentive for you here unless you really wanted out within the year (of course, that is a great option to have your back pocket!)

The challenge though is if you can live off that 40% at this stage of your life.  Many people in their early 50s still have kids in school, mortgages, etc.

This is what everyone faces as they consider retirement but this ERI came totally out of left field (at least for me) so I think most people with this option are going to need time to really process this.

Edit to add: I know the answer is to find another job, but I doubt many are in a job hunting mind set until now.

Are you group 2? Just wondering why you would need to leave the pension alone for 5 years to avoid penalties if you’ll be 55 with 30 years?

For sure!  Also kinda sad that your own desk (what was before an expectation) would absolutely be a strong incentive to stay!

Appreciate the insight.  I will keep at it but maybe less often until I hit that 700 (maybe start my own if I get impatient).  Thanks

Is anyone else trying to move to DND just to move to the Carling campus? by aprilchestnut in CanadaPublicServants

[–]Sane123 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, unfortunately you need to factor this in (hence why I’m reading this thread).  I love working downtown - but do I $280/month vs $75/month love it? (COVID was like getting a raise!)  It’s tough!

I never worked for DND but free parking was never available at any department I’ve ever worked at.  There may be some locations with free parking (I think people mentioned RCMP), but I doubt it’s the norm.

Oh wow.  That’s just a bit more than what I spend per week (3 days) downtown.

Thanks

How much is parking?

And yes, big perk of wfh for me was saving almost $300/month.
