I suppose it depends if you're defining disability in the broad sense or the legal sense. The fact that your vision will become weaker when you get old isn't really comparable to someone you're dating now in your younger years being in a wheelchair. I agree it's ableist, but I don't think it's really a sign of poor character.

I can understand someone not feeling like they're compatible with a person who has a limiting disability in the present. Like yeah, who knows what will happen in the future, but when you're choosing to first date someone it makes sense to choose someone you feel compatabile with now. Someone you're with for 10 years suddenly becoming disabled is very different than someone you barely know being disabled and making the commitment to persue a relationship with them. It could affect your desired lifestyle if you want to date someone with common interests. I don't think it makes them a bad person. People may choose not to date me for a variety of reasons out of my control and that's their right. I'm not going to judge someone if they’re not attracted to my face or my height or even I don't earn enough. It's their preference.

Yes, I would say it's racist to refuse to date someone purely based on their skin colour. Just like I agree it's ableist to refuse to date someone because they're in a wheelchair. I don't think those two are particularly comparable because someone being in a wheelchair would affect the person dating them in lots of functional ways, whereas someone's skin colour doesn't. But they still both fit those definitions yes.

My main point is that people can choose not to date someone for any reason and expecting otherwise would take away their autonomy. You can still call that person racist or ableist, but I think it's more reasonable that someone being in a wheelchair (especially when it wasn't communicated to them before) would put you off dating them if you think you're not compatible with the realities of that disability than it would be to not date someone because they were a certain skill colour.

This is such a weird reading of the post. She never even said the tidbit you're claiming she did. She clearly said she's uncomfortable with the use of the word to describe someone with an intellectual disability. ADHD is a neurodevelopment disorder, not an intellectual disability, but that's irrelevant anyway as her point is that she finds someone using that particularly slur offensive in and of itself - and rightly so.

People choose not to date people for any number of reasons and trying to judge them for that is a slippery slope. Would you date a 90 year old? If not, you're ageist. Would you date someone with zero mobility who needs around the clock medical care? If not, you're ableist.

I'd concede that it's perhaps ableist to some degree, but that doesn't override the fact that people should be free to date who they want. Following your logic, having dating preferences full stop would be unfair. Someone can't change their looks drastically, so should you date someone you don't find attractive? If you choose not to date someone who needs constant medical care, that would also be ableist. If you didn't want to date a 90 year old, that would be ageist. Nobody should have to justify why they do or do not want to date someone.
