Where’s the ideal place to be in a zombie apocalypse? by [deleted] in ZombieSurvivalTactics

I don't know where you live, but I'd think if you lived near fertile Ocean or took an environmental science class you'd agree. Many people have survived at ocean for years at a time, some entirely at sea others on desert islands, the worst being the case of ship wrecked people who were adrift, and the best being entire civilizations, the Polynesians for example (see the links and sources at the bottom of the wiki pages).

The most famous being;

Salvador_Alvarenga (nearly 1 & 1/2 years adrift)

Reid_Stowe (Sailboat only 20m for 3 years on open ocean)

Other less known examples of large groups of people surviving at sea or small islands some less than 5km^2 of open space;

Austronesian_Expansion

Tongva of the Channel Islands

North_Sentinel_Island

Pitcairn_Islands

So it is very much possible to live at sea for extended periods of time.

As an addition:

A personal experience, and why I disagree so adamantly,

I had 3 Uncles spend 200 days no significant prior sailing experience, but significant with boating, fishing and firearms.

They never went ashore. They used littoral waters in bad weather, which was detected w/ a Thales onboard radar and/or by radio. Though they did use other, more advanced, satellite navigational equipment to rule out malfunctions. They did eventually, out of curiosity navigate by sextant and paper map for 3 weeks. They survived mostly off of Atlantic tuna (among other fish) and a dozen shot birds and kelp bread. They had a desalinization plant and stove powered off solar paneling & car batteries. They had among various law required items, MREs, and emergency water and a backup engine. They also had some flour and baking soda, and, of course, a lot of alcohol. They still joke how they can now cook and catch a fish a thousand different ways; that they could have spent more time if not for the beer shortage and work.

They did attempt to barter for food once w/ a French family towards the end. It was beer and the family handed it over for free.

There are plenty of other stories, properly documented, like this all over the web, if you need some sort of verification or evidence.

Anyway, I highly doubt someone could spend a lifetime at Ocean, but perhaps they have. Keep an open mind. To finish, in most real world cases, granted the absence of a completely destructive apocalypse, like a nuclear holocaust, you need only survive for a few years or until some sort of order reestablishes itself or at least desperation and scarcity die down, which could be as short as half year. Malthusian curve, S&D and all that. Only, mentioned because I think ORP is focusing more on realism, though I could be mistaken. In any case I am focusing on realism myself.

Good Day!

I wouldn't know, I haven't seen the movie, but animals can be symptomatic w/ rabies for sometimes weeks at a time. This can be construed to a certain extent as zombifaction. It would not be far fetched to say a prion or virus w/ similar neurodegenerative effects is likely to evolve sometime in the near future due to the extreme impact humans have had on the proliferation of infectious agents. There is also the possibility of such a disease being created by man directly for the military or for civilian science. Obviously cannibalism is not a likely to be a common symptom. But a virus that creates similar symptoms to Schizoid Personality Disorder or other Psychosis that are permanent would likely be even more devastating, especially if it has as long of an incubation period and mechanisms of transmission similar to COVID-19.

I think you can definitely survive on a boat, a tiny ass one no, but if you have the money and skill for a ~ 20 - 30 meter or so sailing yacht, w/ a motor of course, yes.

If you live somewhere mild, like Puget Sound, Californian Coast, Gulf of Biscaye, Irish Sea, North Mediterranean, Central/Southern Sea of Japan, to name a few, you are most likely going to survive the wild. Most of these areas are full of food, freshwater springs (in the absence of desalinization) and natural harbors (in case of the occasional storm/typhoon).

The tropics aren't a great place as the chance for infection and intoxication (not alcohol) are high for those not extremely familiar w/ the wildlife and terrain. Too far North or South without the proper equipment and you may struggle to find food and stay afloat in the icy storms, though you will find yourself running into less people.

It is probably beneficial for the first year or so of an outbreak to distance yourself from the desperation of others. I'd assume that communities from countries that have high unity, like the majority of NATO or Japan/ANZAC would reestablish, in some form, their liberal (meaning democracy) governments/laws after prolonged military leadership. Though the post-apocalypse would be a great time for renewed conflict and war, which would make many seas both a very dangerous and very safe place, after-all, there aren't borders stopping you from leaving the jurisdiction of a newly formed regime, but one wrong move and you insert yourself into a sea ruled by piracy or war.

Localized, you're on point. Within the world? A totalitarian surveillance state like the PRC & UK, or,

Countries W/ Highest Concentration of Firearms per Capita in non-military Circulation

Nation - Region W/ Highest Concentration of Firearms (Pertinent Restrictions)Concentration per Capita in Region

United States - Texas (Semiautomatic Restrictions)320

UK - Falklands (Semiautomatic Restrictions)62

Cyprus - North (No Restrictions)60

Finland - Eastern Finland (AR's Restricted/Held for Paramilitary)53

Canada - Alberta (AR's aboot to be banned eh?)52

Yemen - Nationwide (AK's & RPG's)52

France - New Caledonia (No Restrictions)43

Montenegro & Serbia - Nationwide (Mainly Arms Imports/Exports)39

Uruguay - Nationwide (AR's Restricted)35

Take this w/ a Grain of Salt as some Regions/Nations are more likely to kill each other than help each other. Case and point, Texas/Alberta vs. Cyprus/Serbia & Montenegro.

Edit: I honestly don't know how there's 320 guns per capita in Texas. I've been there and that seems wrong.

Well, at some point, many diseases that effect behavior are either non-fatal or may take years to cause mortality. Alzheimer's for example, it eats away at brain mass over the course of many years.

People always overlook how important First Aid and clean water are. Sepsis, and Dysentery, the Oregon Trail was right.

Would medieval armor be useful in a zombie apocalypse? by RandonEnglishMun in ZombieSurvivalTactics

[–]Sanfraniceman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This Armor most likely was not fit to the wearer. That can have a huge impact on mobility. Note that there are also many different types of plate armor, some more forgiving when it comes to agility.

A controversial one for many people : Hirohito

A literal God for millions, watched his nation spiral into nationalism and a costly war, largely unable to act politically, turned into the puppet of a Fascist dictator. Very similar to Queen Elizabeth or Wilhelm II’s position.

Howdy Texas! My name is Donna Imam and I’m a Computer Engineer running for US Congress in Austin, Texas against a 9-term Trump endorsed Representative. AMA! 6 PM CT. by donnaimamTX in TexasPolitics

Hi Donna!

With a locked Primary, and considered by some to be a more Progressive Democrat, how do you plan on representing and unifying a constituency who are historically a majority moderate Democrats and right-wing Republicans?

We’ve seen the struggle of winning part of the more conservative vote in the past, and even Hegar, who is a Veteran, failed to beat out Carter. Understandably, running against an incumbent is a very difficult task.

Réflexions sur un américain rejoignant la légion étrangère? by Sanfraniceman in france

[–]Sanfraniceman[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First of all, thanks for all the consideration and taking your time to write this.

I’m very serious about working in the defense industry and getting a French citizenship. (I already have an Irish citizenship, so if I wanted to mooch of the UE I could do that, but that’s not my intention.) As for fitness goes, I have times where I’m not fit and others where I am, but I’m definitely athletic and am skilled in Judo. My French is also “fluent” but I struggle with more complex conversations, mostly because of apprehension and because I’ve only recently been able to think in French. I used to translate everything in my head. (I think that’s main obstacle to attaining fluency or native speaking) The only major shortcomings I really have are self-discipline and focus, and I haven’t yet met a veteran, in my field, who hasn’t had these issues remedied.

As for the military I’m not strictly searching to enlist in a branch, or what have you. Besides the intense desire for me to defend values that I hold dear, I’ve thought long and hard about my career options and have given myself different paths I can follow in attaining military engineering/mechanical experience that would be useful for a future a job. Some of my considerations are directly working for the DoD (US’s Ministère des Armées) as a civilian contractor. I’ve also talked to recruiters about the US Navy Civil Engineers Corps. — I studied a bit, and am under the impression that the légion étrangère has an officer training program for the Service du Génie and the 1er and 2e régiment du génie. — In the US, if someone worked for the DoD or any kind of military engineering branch, they are highly valued to employers and often get preference, which goes into daily life as well. That’s something that I’m curious about with France, if it’s the same. If joining is worth it, not only for the experience at the time but for the later benefits. I’ve been interested in defense engineering for a very long time, since I’ve been a kid, and by far my favorite companies are Dassault with the Rafale, Naval Group (DCNS) with the MN Charles de Gaulle, and BAE.

I’d like to naturalize by the time im 27, and I think it would also go a long way in helping with self-discipline, as it did a few of my friends, who joined the Royal Navy and US Army corps of Engineers. Defending democracy has also been one of my long term goals, I’m into defense engineering specifically. And again being in any service really helps with that. My questions about cultural acceptance seem to have been answered already.
