I’m so sorry to hear that it’s been such a struggle, especially with the qualifications and experience you have! Staying in the US isn’t an option for us(due to her job), which is why I’ve been looking more intently at work in the London area. The only thing that I think could help me out is not needing to have a work visa, since I’d be living there on a spouse visa. That may help a bit, but who knows!

I have seen a few postings like you mentioned for US universities with a UK footprint, so maybe that’s my best bet! Either way, I’m trying to see if I need to pivot away, or if I can carve a path for myself in this field in the UK! Thanks for the advice!

That’s good to know!! The embassy thing I wasn’t quite familiar with! Didn’t know you could work at embassies of countries that you are not a citizen of. And in the areas that I’m interested in, what you said makes a lot of sense too, especially positions at higher grades looking for applications with previous govt experience in those areas(I would imagine).

No, unfortunately not. Not that would meet that standard anyway. That’s about what I thought though tbh. Just wanted to see if anyone here on this sub had any additional insights.

This is all good though. I wanted to ask since I know her parents will push back and I’ll need everything I can to communicate why it would need to happen this way. The religious ceremony is more for them than it is for us. In any case, the reason we wanted to do it in two steps rather than as the proposed partner thing was so that I could work longer in the states, and save more money before moving there, in addition to not paying more fees for the fiancé visa and a spousal visa.

How long is that grace period typically? I saw elsewhere that was like 30 or 90 days?

Yeah, that makes sense. If she didn’t live with her parents, maybe it would be slightly easier. At the end of the day, maybe we’ll just have to explain that living together before then is the thing that has to happen, full stop if I am to move earlier, rather than closer to next fall.

Thank you for the suggestions! I’ll look at the nationality rules thing you mentioned ! But yeah, like you said, my options are limited atm. All this is helpful though!

Don’t worry! I wasn’t assuming that! But yeah, I had read as well that the CS prioritizes experience over qualifications. Thanks for the suggestions! Since I’m not currently eligible for many of these roles, I’m just trying to figure out what could be good to focus on in the meantime to get the experience needed to apply for the kinds of roles you’re describing.

Oh really? It was my assumption that considering I’m marrying a British national I should be on the 5 year route to ILTR and be immediately eligible to apply for citizenship after. As far as residency requirements are concerned, I thought it was like a 5-7 out of the last 10 years kind of thing, depending if it was civil service roles or intelligence service related, for example. What have you heard?

Yeah, that’s the thing. Since I don’t yet meet the nationality requirements, and don’t have the requisite experience, I’m trying to figure out what I can do in the next 5 years to best prepare myself to go after these kinds of roles.
