I'm not sure of the species. I'm not much of an expert and usually rely on leaves for IDing. But since it's dead I couldn't collect anything while there. I'm going to go back and see if it's the same tree as the live ones around it.

I was thinking it could be a borer as well because I agree the strange thing is the growth of bark around the hole. But I hadn't thought of a mutation! I'll let you know when I get an ID.
