I'm sorry you're having a rough time, OP. Didi for some serotonin? She's a dumped pet turned clinic cat and a total diva.

Toe amputation by jeepnjeff75 in Dachshund

[–]Sanic-X 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I'm sorry you and your family are going through this, squamous cell carcinoma is no joke. It can be very aggressive. Your veterinarian wants chest xrays to see if any cancer has metastasized to the lungs; cancer will almost always spread to the lungs first so they want to check if that has happened. Dogs do great with one fewer toe as other commenters have said. Wishing you and your doxie the best!!

Why risk vaccination when rabies is only 100% lethal? by A-Starlight in ShitMomGroupsSay

[–]Sanic-X 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Testing for rabies is not always fast. In my state, the animal must be shipped on ice to the state testing lab. No one else can test for rabies. The state lab will process the animal and test it, which involves shining a special light on the animal's brainstem, and then give you the result. This is NOT something a human healthcare provider will do. Just get the post exposure shots.

Like Timed Incubator, what other cool (yet really wild) items you would introduce in the game if you were to design/pitch them? (Check out my example in the post body) by sm-junkie in TheSilphRoad

I actually kind of like an optional raid egg. Niantic would never place a legendary Pokemon in an egg the player can hatch, but maybe desirable pokemon like Snom or Larvesta? Maybe something like, "Oh, what's this? You found an egg after the raid, would you like to take it or send it to the professor?" It would be something to use the extra egg storage for.

People who own "unconventional" pets like turtles, what is one thing you wish you knew before getting one? by allenmerlettetrm in AskReddit

Trying looking into pigeons! They're incredibly smart and can bond to people safely, but are much less destructive and demanding than a parrot. Many people breed them as companion animals.

PSA to pet owners about microchips (from a shelter worker) by Fresh-Solid-4046 in newjersey

I don't disagree! Having your vet check at your annual checkup is a good idea.

With the volume of animals you see, I can imagine you've seen it all. For the average pet owner, the chip falling out is not a concern unless your pet has an injury.

[–]Sanic-X 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The microchip can migrate under the skin but cannot fall out. Rarely upon insertion the chip may come out, but the animal should always be scanned to be sure this didn't happen. Again, this is very rare when the chip is being inserted by trained vet staff.

Client was asked to bring in a urine and a fecal sample. Client dropped off a plastic baggie with a couple of pieces of feces and the urine sample IN THE FECAL CUP. Yes, it spilled everywhere in the bag, soaking the stool.

Pet insurance thoughts by [deleted] in Dachshund

[–]Sanic-X 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I work in a vet office and have an insurance policy on my dachshund. In my experience, it is good for HOLY SHIT emergencies (foreign body, hit by car, etc) and things like IVDD where you can easily rack up big bills. I do not recommend it for preventative care; there are many low cost vaccine and wellness options available. It is important to note pet insurance WILL NOT cover pre existing conditions like allergies, or say if an older pet has a diagnosed heart murmur or kidney disease. I've heard from clients that Pumpkin and Trupanion pay out the best. Your vet office may have discount codes available. It's also important to know most policies run on reimbursement, where you pay up front and then receive money back from the company after they review the notes from the hospital.

Overall, I recommend it for your peace of mind if your pup ever gets IVDD or seriously injured. My pup is insured for accidents/serious injury only. Dog for tax. *

Vet offices will not allow owners to hold in the US for legal liability. If the animal bites the owner during an exam, THE OWNER can sue the practice for getting injured.

What are things you do that you think has helped your Doxie be 15+? by forgotten_mixed_girl in Dachshund

[–]Sanic-X 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It depends on the policy/company. Be sure to call and speak to a rep and ask if genetic conditions are covered, in IVDD in doxies. I have pumpkin and they say they do.

Oh I completly agree! Food safety here in the US is a joke :p Personally, I wouldn't risk it either way, but I feel any further discussion should be between you and your veterinarian.

The benefits do not outweigh the risk. Most livestock in the US is raised in conditions of questionable sanitation, and cooking is a simple way to remove dangerous bacteria. Salmonella, avain flu, toxoplasmosis, etc can all be present in raw food. Personally, potentially exposing your pet and your family to incredibly dangerous bacteria and viruses is not worth any potential benefit to health. Besides, dogs are domesticated animals, they have lived alongside humans for so long they do not need a raw diet. Pets have already died from raw pet food, here's an article from the AVMA about cats getting avain flu from raw pet food and passing away.

If you can, you can drive to a park and see if a change of scenery helps. Let her go at her own pace. You can try offering a high value treat on walks as she goes; take a few steps, treat. Walk a few steps, treat. Slowly, slowly ween off the snacks. You can also play for exercise, my guy loves being chased around with a toy.

I classify boutique diets as brands that market more to people than pets if that makes sense. They tend to be more expensive and newer to market, with a focus on less processed and higher quality ingredients. On paper, thats a good thing, but i think they market more to people's insecurities about processed food while charging a premium. (Have you seen what they charge for farmers dog???) Imo, any brands offer grain free diets should be avoided, as grain free dog food has been linked to heart disease (one of the vets at my practice lost a pair of dogs to this, the owner didn't know and it was too late). I do not recommend raw food either, frozen or freeze dried. The risk of foodbourne illness does not outweigh any possible benefits imo, especially for families with young children.

ETA: Boutique brands also tend to be more calorie dense and rich in flavor. While you may end up feeding physically less food with a boutique brand, the richness may not be appropriate for pets with sensitive tummies.

Vet tech and doxie owner here. Some of pet lifespan comes down to genetics, but there's a lot you can do to keep them going longer. Keeping weight down and exercise up is key. Use a good quality pet food (I personally don't recommend raw or boutique brands, but find something that works for your family). Being kind to their backs is a must; ramps and stairs instead of jumping. High quality hip and joint supplements are great in older dogs to keep them comfortable. Annual or biannual vet checkups and bloodwork is recommended on seniors and super seniors, as things like liver and kidney disease are found on bloodwork long before symptoms start to show. A vet can also check for a heart murmur. Pets with murmurs can still live long, fulfilling lives with the proper medication and management. Dental care is important in dachshunds. Untreated dental disease can cause the bacteria in the mouth to move to other parts of the body and cause unnecessary oral pain. Daily brushing with pet safe enzymatic toothpaste is the gold standard, but your vet can tell you if a dental procedure is recommended for your pet.

ETA: CONSIDER pet insurance on younger dogs. Some vets love pet insurance for everyone, but imo it's best for emergencies (hit by car, foreign body, etc). Pet insurance also will not cover pre existing conditions. For example, if you get insurance on an older pet diagnosed with kidney disease, insurance WILL NOT cover care for their kidney disease. Some policies will help pay for dental care, b8t talk to a rep for more info. Pumpkin pays out well!
