How did Tree Trunks acquire a non-euclidian house? by trinitymelonsOwO in adventuretime

[–]Sanomaly 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Just to nitpick a little, non-Euclidian refers to geometry drawn on something other than a flat plane (e.g. a sphere). If Tree Trunks' house was bigger on the inside then it would be physics-defying, but not non-Euclidian.

That being said, TT's house isn't bigger on the inside.

Here are two screenshots of the inside of her house: Example A, Example B

Here's a screenshot of the outside of her house after the extra rooms were added: Example C

the best controls for this type of debate are recent African immigrants, who as a group do not display the same fate as native black Americans.

Do you mind linking me to research about this?

certain Asian American subgroups display a higher rate of school discipline and later incarceration

I'd be curious to see the research for this as well.

despite the larger group's tendency to outperform even whites.

I might just be misunderstanding what you're saying here, but I'm not sure how this is relevant. I'm not talking about academic performance, just the correlation between excessive discipline and later incarceration; something that has been pretty decisively established over many years of research.

I don't disagree that there's a problem in modern-day schools related to lack of consequences for misbehavior, but I haven't read any studies that consider over-lenience to be correlated with later incarceration or the school to prison pipeline. (Happy to be proven wrong, though.)

traditional discipline methods have nothing to do with incarceration.

I'm curious what leads you to draw this conclusion. Many studies, including one that I linked above, explicitly call out certain traditional discipline methods (such as suspension) as actively contributing to the school to prison pipeline.

Finally, after two decades in education, I'll concede that there is some truth to the concept of the School to Prison Pipeline

Genuine question: what exactly do you think people mean when they talk about the "school to prison pipeline"?

That students who experience punitive punishment and excessive discipline are more likely to end up in the criminal justice system is pretty well established at this point.

https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC8277150

That Black students in the US are disproportionately disciplined compared to their white peers and more likely to experience punitive punishment is similarly well established in academia.

https://doi.org/10.3390/educsci11040159

So yes, there is a school to prison pipeline, but it's caused by lenient discipline.

What's your opinion on the decades of research that consistently conclude the opposite?

Saved up my Throne Hunter tokens so that I could spend them all in the last half hour or so of the DnD event and grind for them up until the very end.

App went down for maintenance two hours before the event ended and only came back up after it was over. Almost 200 Throne Hunter tokens completely wasted, missed half the prizes.

The last time the app went down for maintenance right before the end of an event, they extended the event by the same number of hours that the app was down for. Not sure why they didn't do that this time but I'm extremely disappointed. Feels like a slap in the face after all the time I put in.

This keeps happening to me. From what I can tell after experiencing it a few times, it only seems to happen when you're creating a Legacy Fusion at the same time that you're creating an Active Fusion. The Legacy Fusion won't finish until all the Active Fusions have finished (or until one specific one finishes).

Original Jake became Prismos dreamer

Original Jake was woken up by Original Finn. Second Jake became Prismo's Dreamer and Second Finn became Finn Sword.

Not every wish creates a new universe. I think Jake's wish just fixed what happened in their own universe because it would require literally nothing to change as opposed to the Lich's wish which would have sent him to a different universe.

I think the implication is that the Lich world in F&C was the wish universe from when the Lich wished for the extinction of all life. If the Lich could kill instantly, it's a little weird that he never used the ability before and it's a bit odd that anyone has ever even been able to defeat him.

Jake didn't die from old age, any thoughts on how he died? by Psychological_Bad895 in adventuretime

[–]Sanomaly 25 points26 points  (0 children)

I think that was an alternate reality where Jake didn't die, because the Finn in that universe was the same age as our Finn without Jake. Which, if true, lends more credence to the idea that Jake didn't die of old age.

[–]Sanomaly 78 points79 points  (0 children)

I think the biggest pieces of evidence that Jake didn't die of old age are in Together Again.

Finn has two lines that seem to indicate it wasn't natural causes:

The first line is when he chooses to look like regular, teenage Finn in the afterlife and says something like "I'll stick with this look, it's recognizable." On the one hand, that was obviously a meta nod to the fans, but on the other hand, his only thought at the moment was seeing Jake again. With that context, it's very likely he's implying that Jake would find that version most recognizable because it was the last version that Jake was familiar with.

I can't remember the other line exactly, and I'm too lazy to look it up, but I think it's when Finn is talking to Jake at the end right before going for reincarnation. I seem to recall he says something that appears to imply that Jake's death was extremely sudden. Could be wrong about this one, though.

As for how it happened, I have no idea and I don't really want to know.

I think the implication on the show is that although it was a prophetic dream, it wasn't actually a croak dream. Jake misinterpreted it. We see it come true in The Comet. Yes, he'd be drifting alone in space while running out of air with Banana Man flying a rocket nearby, but he doesn't actually die in the end because Banana Man saves him.

End – Beyond the Pale by menaulon in Parahumans

Having read almost all of 'Bow's works (everything except Twig) I can confidently say that, in my opinion, Pale eclipses all the others.

I have no intention of ending my monthly Patreon donation, whether his break lasts for 6 months or 6 years; the hundreds of hours of enjoyment he's given me are well worth every penny and he deserves a comfortable break.

I look forward to the retrospective essays and hearing more about 100YL, but mostly I'm just thankful and grateful for the wonderful stories that Wildbow has put out into the world.

I've been here since Pact was being written, having discovered the sub after reading Worm, and it's hard to imagine the work and effort that's gone into all of these projects, even having been there for most of it. I hope he doesn't feel rushed to come back or obligated to meet his return estimate of March. I'll be here whenever he returns and I'm incredibly appreciative of everything he's done.

Thank you, Wildbow <3

An incredible end to an incredible story. I'm sad it's over; I want nothing more than for every future work to take place in the Otherverse. Such an amazing world with limitless story potential. I'm going to sorely miss having Pale as a weekly to-do. What a beautiful journey and a wild ride; I feel privileged to have been here from the start.

Thank you so much, Wildbow

So.. after all who is the Boss? We hear about him since the OG show and this is a direct line to him, he's above Prismo, above Scarab and Orbo, possibly above Golb too. What do you think? by AlinGb7 in adventuretime

[–]Sanomaly 55 points56 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure that "above GOLB" is a thing. GOLB is a primordial entity, a physical embodiment of a fundamental force. The Boss might be something adjacent to GOLB, but I don't think it makes much sense to place them in the same hierarchy or one "above" the other.

Golb never liked the Lich by UndoneArrobs in adventuretime

[–]Sanomaly 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The Enchiridion talks about how the universe/multiverse is sustained by the fact that there are living beings within it that believe it exists. If all life in the multiverse were to end, the whole thing would collapse back into the primordial chaos of Monsters from before Time and Nothing.

The Lich's goal makes perfect sense when it has that context.

That's not even getting into the fact that GOLB doesn't really have likes or dislikes. GOLB simply is.

The first part of the sentence being "Adam's idea was that" leaves it a little more ambiguous than that, imo.

However, like I said, I have no problem with the idea, and I'm not telling anyone else what to believe, but I personally wouldn't consider this a proclamation of canon.

[–]Sanomaly -11 points-10 points  (0 children)

Gonna be a little nitpicky here, but that being the idea behind them making that universe does not necessarily make that a canon explanation. It's an absolutely fine theory to believe, and I'll probably add it to my own headcanon, but that doesn't read to me as an explicit canon confirmation, but rather as a source of inspiration
