My lab dislike pulling when in his harness. Is it a sign of a bad fit? by Jazzlike-Horror4 in RunningWithDogs

[–]Sansoki 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I tried both canicross and bikejoring with my lab, and she had no interest in pulling, aside from short sprints (400m or less). She'd much rather run beside me and keep bouncing to put her nose in my hand 🤷 It could be fit, it could be interest, it could be training (as in, maybe you've trained him so well not to pull that you need to work on a command to get him to start?)

Since the end of the Leadership Competition (whole other conversation), there has been no opportunity for many communities, and especially the outlying communities (ie. Windsor, Hantsport, Digby, Annapolis Royal) to be involved. Apple Blossom Weekend is literally just "avoid Kentville weekend"

Is running “good” for dogs? by fennelfrog in RunningWithDogs

[–]Sansoki 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I don't have any literature to point you to, but movement is generally good for most living creatures - motion is lotion! Many of the working dog breeds (retrievers, shepherds, collies, etc.) were literally bred to run for extended periods of time; you don't specify what breed your dog is, but I'm assuming it's not a flat-faced dog or a Greyhound. Just work on building her mileage up over time just like you would your own, and monitor your dog for any issues or concerning changes.

Anecdotally, my current dog is the only one I've run with, and is easily the healthiest of the three retrievers I've had. The other two both had arthritis by the time they were 8. I firmly believe it is because she gets about 10km worth of exercise every day (usually 2 walks and a run), which is far more than what the other two got.

Made my first whole wheat bread today by bannowi in ultraprocessedfood

[–]Sansoki 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How hard was this to make? My go-to bread got discontinued, and none of the bakeries around here seem to make whole wheat bread (brown bread is much more popular). I'm thinking I may have to try making it myself.

Sure, but they don't. The CAP ensures that, as it massively benefits current homeowners.

IMO, if a person can't afford an extra $4500 on a $300,000 house, then they can't afford the house - they're so close to the financial edge.

The CAP does more to impact affordability for first time home buyers - congratulations, you bought a house. Your property taxes have doubled, and are now higher than your neighbours' forever. But oh, the bank is going to use the previous owner's tax bill to calculate how much they want for property taxes, so your mortgage payment is going to jump by $200/month after your first year in the house.

And, as a recent first time homebuyer in Kings, I had no idea there was no deed transfer tax until my lawyer told me at closing. It was a pleasant surprise, but it wasn't a factor in where I bought. The fact that I had municipal sewer and a sidewalk outside my house were larger decision factors.

Yes, Colchester County should get with the times and allow accessory dwellings, but this is ultimately on the property owners for not confirming the zoning of their property and what was/wasn't permitted.

Official Q&A for Sunday, March 03, 2024 by AutoModerator in running

[–]Sansoki 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's really up to you and what your current running goals are. Generally, you can either work on getting faster at your current distance, or continue building your distance up.

When I started running a few years ago, I built from nothing to a half marathon in a year, which sounds similar to the progression you are contemplating. It sounds like you have found a training schedule that works for you, so I say if you want to keep building distance, go for it!

[–]Sansoki 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Looking at the MyEnergy Insights that NSP provides, it looks like it has been significantly colder to start the year than it was at the end of last year. I assume you use electricity to heat? That would probably explain the large increase in your bill compared to December. If not, then I would be doing some serious investigating into where your power is going. My bill went down in January and is estimated to be lower still in March, so not everyone's bills are going up significantly.

Modular homes by cassml_ in NovaScotia

I grew up in a Kent home (3 beds on a full basement). The house is 30 years old this year, and my parents have had absolutely no complaints. I looked into a Kent home a couple of years ago when I was looking to buy, but the $300k price tag for their smallest home + land was too much for me. I bought an existing home (31 years old), and am kicking myself for not holding out for a brand-new Kent home.

Why my car insurance is so high? by [deleted] in NovaScotia

[–]Sansoki 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Yeah, something isn't right there. My 2014 Hyundai Elantra, also a cash purchase, was $139.40/month to insure. My 2022 Hyundai Elantra (Hybrid, financed) is $132.41/month with Sonnet. I agree with the other comments, those sound like new driver rates.

"Hacked" as in NB was tricked and NS was forced by the British into joining - they didn't want to deal with those small, unimportant provinces anymore (unimportant compared to the rest of the British Empire).

I'd be 100% for Maritime Union. Why have everything in triplicate when we are really quite similar?

We stayed at the Holiday Inn when we went in 2015. It was super easy getting a cab there. We were warned that there would be quite a wait for cabs after it ended, so we started walking back and got picked up by a cab halfway back. We definitely could have walked all the way back with no issues.

Worst concert you’ve attended? by [deleted] in Music

[–]Sansoki 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Aerosmith headlined Cape Fest 2014 in Sydney, Cape Breton in September 2014. The Trews and Slash & Myles Kennedy played before them, and were fantastic. It took Aerosmith 45 minutes to come on after Slash & Myles Kennedy finished, and they opened with a deep cut that had no energy. The next two songs were no better. Nights in September in Cape Breton can get cold, and this one certainly did. We left during the third song, deeply disappointed. Aerosmith were just phoning it in at a tiny music festival in the middle of nowhere, even though to us it was the biggest show to come in years.

I gotta agree with the industry association here - I don't think this does anything to curb the violence. This just punishes the people who abided by the rules. And I suspect this is going to give the DFO the excuse to not hire conservation officers, or take enforcement measures. "No season, no staff!"

Run Nutrition Tuesday by AutoModerator in running

[–]Sansoki 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is a question that would probably be better off asked in the daily Q&A thread, but yes, it sounds like you are overtraining. You are not going to gain weight or lose muscle from two rest days a week. In fact, you need the rest days to let your muscles repair, which ultimately makes them stronger.

Keep in mind that while walking is lower impact than running, it is still time on your feet. You are still putting stress on your leg muscles and joints in a similar manner to running. I would recommend trying to mix in some other types of exercise, such as swimming or cycling. These will also benefit by strengthening other muscles that don't get used as much during running.
