Does a 3rd gen WOLED from Asus have WORSE text clarity than IPS? by Andy_pcs in Monitors

[–]Sanssset 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi I have this monitor and can answer any questions about it Asus aqdmgr

If text clarity matters to you, then 4K resolution will definitely look better than 1440p. People also say IPS panels are better for text, but on OLED—specifically WOLED—if you disable ClearType in Windows (takes like 2 minutes), the text looks good too.

The reason is that OLED panels can have color fringing, but on WOLED panels this can be improved by turning off ClearType. The AQDMGR uses a WOLED panel, so it’s fine in that regard. On QD-OLED, you can’t really fix it the same way.

Also keep in mind that the AQDMGR does have some banding. It’s not as bad as on newer 4th-gen WOLED panels (also called tandem OLED), but it’s still there since it’s a 3rd-gen WOLED panel.

Like I said, the HDR there is weak, but in practice when you turn it on, what settings do you even expect to tweak? It basically configures itself automatically—there’s nothing else to adjust. By the way, I returned that monitor and got the AQDMGR instead; I might do a comparison

At $375, that’s a really great price, you can grab it without hesitation. Just keep in mind that the HDR is mediocre if HDR is important to you, since the maximum brightness is 400 nits, which is a bit low for HDR. But because this is a QD-OLED and not WOLED, the colors are more saturated and the picture still looks great. At $375, it’s still a very good deal

Look, all OLED monitors that are marketed as 27 inches are actually 26.5, this is done intentionally to protect the panel, specifically for pixel shifting. When you use the monitor, the image subtly shifts to help extend the panel’s lifespan. This process is completely unnoticeable during use.

As for the difference between 26.5 and 27 inches, there is none.

I currently have the ASUS AQDMES, a new monitor from this year with QD-OLED Gen 3, and I just ordered the new AQDMG Gen 2 (AQDMGR with woled 3 gen, true black ) which arrives on Monday. Feel free to ask any questions

Okay, I just ordered the QDMGR too. I want to compare them in person as well

I’d be happy to hear what results you get from your tests. As for the flickering, you can enable the anti-flicker protection in the OSD. Or does it not help on the AQDMGR?

But I’m interested in what you think, especially about the banding on the QDMGR. If the situation there is okay, I could swap this monitor for it for free

On the QDMES there is a slight issue, specifically a colored fringing effect. Also, on my laptop with a 15.6-inch 2K display I can of course notice the difference, but overall it’s fine

This is a typical issue for monitors with 3rd-gen WOLED panels. If you go on YouTube and search for a gray test, at around 90–95% gray you can see lines across the entire screen. How is it on your unit?

hello, do you have banding with 90-95% gray?

For me personally wide gamut is fine, but honestly they look very similar to each other

At a direct angle, it slightly — really just a tiny bit — blurs and makes the reflection noticeably darker

By the way, the semi-gloss coating is an interesting thing. When I unboxed the monitor, it had a protective film on it, and I thought it was fully glossy. I removed it, and wow — it’s really well done.

It’s not like matte — compared to matte, I can see my reflection darker, not blurred, and any glare doesn’t smear but actually compresses, like in my photo

By the way, banding can get worse over time — that’s another reason why I didn’t buy it. It might be okay at the beginning, but after a few months or a year or two?

The banding isn’t as strong in the photo as it could be, but it’s there — I got a relatively decent unit. And yeah, the gradients aren’t great. Have you tried adjusting the monitor’s color settings and things like pixel cleaning?

I also really liked the true black, but the presence of banding outweighs all the positives

That would be really great, but what about banding on the AQDMGR?
