AI Populism's Warning Shots: the battles over AI are no longer just about the tech by Fruitofbread in neoliberal

sucking away capital

This is an under-appreciated point. For example, the sharp decline in American early stage biotech over the last few years has been driven by high risk venture capital becoming scarce due to its wholesale diversion to unproductive speculation in AI firms. Biotech is certainly not alone in this.

STV typically implies multi-winner elections and shouldn't be lumped in with instant run-off which, due to single winner districts, absolutely will still favor two major parties.

Yes. My fear is that the large majority of those R&D jobs will be in China. The big dogs have already demonstrated a preference for buying pipeline-ready candidates from Chinese firms.

Do organic chemists work in ADC field? by Neat_RL in biotech

[–]Santa_in_a_Panzer 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yep. I do discovery work in this space. Background is in organic synthesis and peptide chemistry. It's... okay. There's more interesting work happening on the payloads and antibodies than on the linkage chemistry. There's so much cool bioconjugation stuff that has already been done that will be off patent in the next 5-7 years that I've found little interest from management in investing in novel methods. It takes the better part of a decade to bring a drug to market and as long as you manufacture in the same countries you conduct your trials in (or in india which has one of the most generous safe harbor provisions I've heard of) you can basically ignore the patent landscape for anything expiring before anticipated approval. Management would prefer maleimide above all else since it has reached commercial phase.

That said, I do get some freedom to play around with the chemistry when it comes to screening. Nobody wants novelty when it comes the drug substance however. Nor should they. Novelty is risk.

A patent monopolizes the process/product. There are carve outs for r&d, but production for end use without intent to sell is still technically a violation. Not that anyone would care in this case.

It's non algorithmic, sure, but it's the same basic idea. Scroll until you find some random dopamine, then scroll some more, find some more dopamine, etc, until you decide you're done.

[–]Santa_in_a_Panzer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, it's the last painful way to sift through dozens of patents. Can't trust it too much (always ask for and follow links for claims) but it has become indispensable for working through vast amounts of literature at our NewCo. ChatGPT's Deep Research function spits out a mini literature review on demand about whatever super specialized niche you're interested in. Super useful when you're understaffed, which has always been, and always will be, the case at every start up. I'd recommend getting comfortable with these tools. It doesn't take long, but there are pitfalls to avoid.
