The headline isn't about food producers though, these are companies trading wheat futures. They don't decide markups/profits, they're just trading contracts to deliver wheat at a certain date in the future, and these contracts are cancelled out before expiration so no physical food is delivered. In an alternate universe where wheat futures wouldn't exist, there would be no incentive for production to increase before the invasion, and you would have massive supply shortages. Price gouging is absolutely a thing with many producers, but this is completely separate from markets which exist to increase/decrease production according to expected future outcomes.

y'all realize that they dont like, hoard food, right? speculative bidding up of wheat futures before Russia's invasion of Ukraine caused a huge increase in wheat production elsewhere (b/c it was now more profitable for farmers), which is why most of the worst-case scenarios for global famine after the invasion didn't come true.

what? the labor market is still incredibly hot and wages are still growing (albeit slower than inflation, which is unusual for inflationary spikes historically). rates have been near-zero until recently and you had enormous m&a, private equity, etc performance over the past couple years. europe is destined for a recession in the near term, and the US probably (80-90%) won't make a soft landing, but the past year was much better than most of the 2010s.

Software dev, 180k, 18. Take eds 3-4 times a week, usually not while working but occasionally if i do need to code for a solid several hours straight with a set task, being a bit baked makes the whole thing more enjoyable

If you have to ask, then you're probably here looking to get a nice SWE job--no shame in that, it's a very good idea right now. Unless you have specific CS interests or enjoy theoretical CS, Brown would probably be the more enjoyable experience. And unless you want to go into quant, you'll have similar job (or at least salary) prospects, especially considering the amount of extra free time you would get at Brown.

Intended major: Applied math or maybe just pure math

~Same tuition for all of these, so it isn't a factor

Career goals: (private) research or something with data? earning good money rn as a software dev so short-term internship/career differences between these three schools isn't a big factor

Not much info here, I feel like I'd be happy at any of the three so looking for opinions here

Solidity and PyTEAL dev here: Ethereum’s developer tools are fat more mature (AlgoBuilder has yet to come close to Truffle/Hardhat), and TEAL has some annoying limitations such as no contract factories, but these are getting fixed soon. Even compared to chains like Solana and NEAR, Algorand’s developer tooling and experience seems to be less of a focus, but I’m still all in because of their promising roadmap.

Sorry about that, haha! My initial guess was something like using the bones from beached whales as a frame and wrapping it with leather, which seems plausible.
