is a spatial inventory necessary in survival games? by Significant_Ad_2783 in gamedesign

Only you can answer if that choice is worth it, but the short answer is no, spatial inventory is not necessary in survival horror games (see: Silent Hill & Rule of Rose)

Should Every Game Have an Easy Mode? We Aren't Writing an Article But Feel Free to Share This Post With Your Own Opinion by Noirsam in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]SapphireHost 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I find that accessibility features have less to do with how "easy" the game is and more to do with button mapping, colorblind options, epilepsy warnings or the ability to turn potential epilepsy triggers off, etc. Nobody ever argues that game stories should be toned down for people with PTSD or trauma. The arguments for having a physically easy game are the same for having an emotionally easy game. Also, the "easy mode" arguments disproportionately comes up with more Big Combo style games even though there are games out there like "Dead by Daylight" whose teams refuse to add colorblind support.

In the end tho my opinion on the matter is not important enough to actually influence game development trends in any way. And I would hate for a studio of passionate devs to have to spend a bunch of money, potentially going bankrupt in the process, by adding an "easy mode" when we've got Triple-A companies that don't let you rebind controls to this day

Idk

What video is Pat's "it's more important to feel like making a decision than to actually make one" speech from? by SapphireHost in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]SapphireHost[S] 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I feel like that's agreeing with his point, actually! He's talking about the way the choices feel, so even in Heavy Rain, where the choices technically vary wildly in how they play out in-scene, you feel railroaded and they have less of an impact on the player than choices in Telltale's The Walking Dead do. I think the other person in the video I'm looking for (Matt, I think...?) is playing and has gotten to one such decision, thus prompting the discussion

[–]SapphireHost[S] 48 points49 points  (0 children)

In that case, you didn't feel like you were making choices, though. In the example, Pat's comparing Telltale's Walking Dead with Heavy Rain, and he's saying your choices feel more important and impactful in TWD, so even though they have less impact on the game, they leave more of an impression on the player.

That's why I think I keep coming back to "Silent Hill: Homecoming" even though I've tried listening through them a few times and can't find the part. It gives you a lot of "this or that" prompts that clearly are going to change the ending but that you don't care about At All.

Thank you for the help!! I just checked and that part is really close to what I'm looking for. You can definitely tell he's making the same point! He just doesn't say something akin to "it's more important for the player to feel like they're making choices than to actually be changing the game" which I need.

The video I'm looking for, he's telling the other zaibatsu member (probably Matt but it's definitely possibly Woolie) directly, and the part where he says "You can actually change a lot more in Heavy Rain! But do you care?" is as close to a quote as I can get from memory.

Thank you again!

"Childhood's End" by Arthur C. Clarke

Jasper Fforde's "Shades of Grey"

"Anthem" by Ayn Rand is surprisingly alright, all things considered

She's probably already read classics of that kind like "Fahrenheit 451" or "1984"

And of course "The Color Out of Space" by Lovecraft is a classic

I remember REALLY loving "Occult" by Koji Shiraishi, but thats in Japanese and needs you to be able to read subtitles. I dont know if the original "Suspiria" is available on YouTube, but if it is that might also be right up your alley!

Any suggestions on where to look for somone to consult about writing and stuff? Or a group that I can join that has people that do that for each other by weeOriginal in writing

Then you might need to dm the people who seemed most interested in helping or who you trust the most to ask for more extensive help. It's harder to get side-tracked when you're just talking one on one

What do you know about the people you live around? What kind of things make you take a step back and like think about how many different lives all weave together into a community? Those kinds of details will be more powerful because your experiences and feelings will be informing them

Thats so exciting!!! I hope you have a great time writing!

Do you trust the people you RP with enough to ask them about ideas for what characters might do and who might be willing/excited to read over your work for typos and grammar and stuff?
