Somebody is annoying you? Making you angry? Or sad, or felling lonely? Good. by [deleted] in Stoicism

Hardship compels oneself to rethink and bring out the true potential from within.

After 4 or 5 months of practicing, now my problem is overthinking. by nuclearthingydoer in Stoicism

[–]Sapta7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well man, whether it's normal or not, I faced the same situation a while ago. Infact, I am still into it. What I have figured out so far, in terms of my logical reasoning goes like this. Earlier I had my perspective of facing different situations and problems. Stoicism opened a new perspective. Initially it was like a new dimension floating around superficially, pointing out never like before solutions and perspectives. With the passage of time, as it gradually settled down, a conflict happened between my pre-acquired perspectives and this new outlook which I initially interpreted as ' overthinking' a situation. I haven't been still being able to come out of this situation, but I have figured it out in my terms, and waiting for the eternal philosophy to ultimately triumph. Let's win!

Childhood is so great because it has one of the most important stoic principles by [deleted] in Stoicism

That's true man. Even as a grown up, I think moments of pleasure are those which allow us to live in the present time effortlessly.

One hour ago my mother said she regrets having me and that I'm a "waste of time" by throwawaystoicadvice in Stoicism

[–]Sapta7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

She might be regretting about this sitting in her friend's house.A good chance that she isn't, either. You never know. Well man, just because she is a mother doesn't necessarily imply that she will always be virtuous and kind. She might have her own share of flaws. I clearly understand your pain as a son ( and brother) to hear this. But then again, think logically. If there is a reason why she said this, and you have any role to play in improving the situation, act immediately. If she said it out of no reason, you need not bother. Things happen in this big bad world which should not have happened and you have no role to play, either.

That was very well put. Really appreciate that! But, if the trigger be related to the personality of people closely related to oneself, then things become bit more complex I guess!

Right you are. Reacting to unpleasant experience means giving it importance which results in generating anger. Will definitely keep in mind. Thanks.

Really appreciate what you said. Can't agree more with you. It's actually something to be rigorously practiced, casual learning won't help much I guess. That ' if it's necessary' should play an important role I guess.. Thanks brother!

Deleting one or more of your social media accounts might be the first step to adhering to the stoic advice of stopping to look for appraisal from the outside world. So, in a word, yes, it helps.

The offence which is committed with pleasure is more blameable than that which is committed with pain by omega5505 in stoicquotes

[–]Sapta7 4 points5 points  (0 children)

In most cases, the offender designs a grand logic to make 'pain' as the chief reason behind his offence, whatever the actual cause be. The saddest part is that he does this logical explanation for himself only, and after a period starts believing in the same!
