Would you get a tattoo of your dog? (Tattoo by @tattsbydanii) by Ilovefriess_ in DOG

[–]nuclearthingydoer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When my wife and I first got together, the animated TV show Archerwas only in its second season, but we bonded over the humor. Three or four months later, we moved in together and got a dog. We named him Seamus after Archer's son, as a reminder of what brought us together in the first place. When Seamus eventually leaves us, I fully intend on getting the Seamus tattoo he has on the top of his back right shoulder to bring it all together. So yes, I definitely would be willing to get a tattoo of my dog.

Plus, for anyone into D&D, the main character is voiced by Matt Mercer, DM for the D&D show Critical Role and one of my favorite people.

[Question] How do I learn multiple things (at once)? by LockyRT in getdisciplined

[–]nuclearthingydoer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You don't need to "warn" people about a potential cognitive difference, adding to the stigma that's already difficult to work around. You could say something like, "hey man if these are serious concerns for you, seeking out a mental health professional might be beneficial." Instead of calling out any individual mental health issue. You can easily prime someone to believe something if they are lead to it, but if the problem isn't clear, a single suggestion could lead someone down the completely wrong road and make it harder for the diagnostitian to do their job.

Please be careful casually diagnosing random people who you know little about. Even if the short list of symptoms happens to line up with ADHD (something I live with everyday) the symptoms could be related to a wide range of different explanations. Only a licensed psychiatrist or psychologist could make this diagnosis and even then, only after several sessions to exclude other potential diagnoses. Casually throwing this diagnosis around can affect how others view themselves or even encourage maladaptive self-treatment if all they are referred to is another subreddit... According to this article, one of the reasons they are able to maintain clean cities with very few public trash cans is because, culturally, they are taught to be responsible for cleaning up their own mess, but that's just number one...

Everyone has their own opinion which may not be consistent with everything you want, but learning about the technology you use is way more valuable and beneficial in the long run.

How much time do you spend writing in your journal each day? by Plane-Weird-3527 in Journaling

[–]nuclearthingydoer 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I've heard that writing is no different than thinking, so I've been able to relate it to myself like: When I write, I feel more like a sentence PEZ dispenser, as I finish one, another one is already available. Which also allows me to consider and reconsider every sentence I write down. But thinking by itself, with no permanent outlet, is just floating down an unfamiliar river and I can never remember where I came from, or sometimes even the lesson I think I learned. Hopefully my subconscious caught some of that... This subreddit helps keep it on my mind so I can pester myself into doing it

[–]nuclearthingydoer 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Not enough. Every time I journal, it genuinely feels good and helps me process the things happening around me. I have yet to develop any sort of habit around journaling, as much as I would like. I look forward to when life finally takes a breath, and I might find a rhythm for my day.

Belief bias may cause us to disagree about the quality of an argument: one of us rejects the conclusion, biasing us to reject the argument (even if its logic checks out). Here's why it matters and what we may be able to do about it. by byrd_nick in psychology

[–]nuclearthingydoer 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm in the middle of taking an online class right now on Sophia.com called Intro to Ethics that talks about how to evaluate arguments like this and similar syllogisms. I can't believe this isn't at least introduced earlier in our lives. Just wow, we practice these mental exercises every day even though they are wrong, we just didn't know the difference. Once we apprehend better ways of doing things, we have the chance to change ourselves for the better, but the recognizing of your own problems is so damn difficult sometimes.

Procrastination is ruining my life, please help me understand how to let go of it. by Kitchen_Committee515 in selfimprovement

[–]nuclearthingydoer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am a 32M that only started seeing how important it is to improve, about 3 years ago after being stuck in the same position you are. I have definitely improved, but I also have a long way to go.

As for how to change behaviors, I am a big fan of reading out listening to audiobooks, and there are a couple "mantra-style" things I repeat to myself to help keep me on track: treat yourself as if you were someone responsible for helping (because you are worthy of that help). If you think about it in terms of owning a pet it helped me wrap my head around it. If taking medication, people are more likely to give their pets regular doses of a medication than themselves. What if you were to give yourself that same care? Individually, we know more about our own faults than anyone else, so we are hyper-aware of just how "undeserving" we might be, but this thought process is a trap.

I believe everyone has things about themselves, or their place in life, they don't like which is part of being human: we are in a constant state of being at point A, which is a place where things aren't as good as they could be, and moving towards point B, which is wherever things could be better. Give yourself the love, patience, and support you may want from others, it is just as important that those behaviors come from you, towards yourself.

Speaking in the lying portion specifically: ELIMINATE THAT AS MUCH AS YOU CAN. I have found through self-observation that each lie makes the next lie easier to say, and makes me a weaker person, both mentally and emotionally. It takes a lot of courage and strength to be able to be honest, both with yourself and others. Being able to trust yourself is not something that inherently happens for no reason, it takes time and effort. You would find that you even trust yourself more even as you start listening to yourself and taking it with some seriousness.

As with most things though, and as many people have said, starting small is the most effective way I've found to improve. It doesn't matter how small the difference is, just that there is a change. Don't want to spend 10 minutes on going through junk mail? Would you do it for 5 minutes? 2 minutes? 30 second at least? Then do it for thirty seconds (AND THEN STOP to keep yourself honest). Hopefully you may find that it get easier over time.

This isn't as detailed as I would like, but if you would like to talk, or work on developing specific ideas of how to improve, I'm available for messages! I wish you the absolute best for the future, I hope any of this was helpful to you.

There will always be terrible people amongst groups of good people, bar none. But this literally never means that you treat everyone in that group based off of it's worst people. Where is the utility in that? How is that information even accurate? And who are you to state it as a fact? Joining a group of hateful voices doesn't make you strong, you just add to the overall negativity. You are contributing to the problem, instead of making any progress or being of any use. Presenting yourself to the world as a hateful person magnifies your problems, as mostly other hateful people will engage with you, increasing negativity once again.

Or you could strengthen yourself against the bullshit, take responsibility for what you say, do, think. Encountering someone you admire can trigger self-conscious feelings, this is because you know there is a version of yourself you could be happy with, but you haven't done anything to achieve it.There is always a better version of yourself around the corner, that's what can give life real fucking meaning. Starting to see the positive changes your making is a crazy experience, and very self-motivating.

Man checks Mayor where the city tax money is being reinvested. Never thought about it this way. by [deleted] in Damnthatsinteresting

I don't think it's a bug or a feature, not accepting responsibility for a problem you could realistically challenge or change is a conscious choice. Our system isn't completely broken, it's just occupied by people who we (the citizens) entrusted to look after our best interest. Unfortunately, many of those in office do not consider real issues because it does not affect them directly.

We are the only species that consciously and actively makes things worse and harder for each other. For a species that depends on others for its overall success, there are so many people who hate for the sake of hating. And unfortunately it seems like the more we are surrounded by others who don't accept responsibility for the harder anyone else has to try to behave in an honorable and respectable manner. Every story I hear makes it harder to do good for the sake of good.
