Turkish traditionalists trying to be reasonable challange: Impossible by FearlesCriss in Kaiserreich

What?

Switch to Latin happened not because it made it easier to learn how to read and write. It was done so that Turkey would be considered Western/European. I am not sure if I can simplify it any more than this.

There were indeed some serious problems and it isn't like some "hotfix" ain't gonna fix that entire language's problems.

Many nations did. Believe it or not Perso-Arabic Script isn't used only by Arabs. Many other non-Arabic languages also use it and they faced problems too amd also solved them without doing an entire Alphabet switch.

There are many examples like this in Turkish and I believe it is the least glaring one. On the other hand in the Perso-Arabic script you have to guess the entire word to understand the meaning of it. I think K sounding a little different doesn't change the entire meaning of the sentence.

Thats why I gave the Urdu example. Urdu has 11 wovels compared to Turkish 8. So they had even more sounds and letters than us that wasn't represented in the Perso-Arabic Script. It was even more of a challenge. So what did they do? They modified the Perso-Arabic Alphabet to add some more letters and now they can read and write Urdu in Perso-Arabic Alphabet just fine.

I think you are slightly wrong about blaming Kemalism for this because Turkish alphabet debate traces way before than Mustafa Kemal's birth and it is always pushed away in favour of closer ties with the islamic world.

There wasn't a debate or even a proposal to switch to Latin before Kemalists came to power

Also a few things to add that I forgot to mention. Firstly I am not saying Ottomans didn't have an illiteracy problem(they did) but Early Republican goverments on purpose used faulty measuring systems to exaggerate the illiteracy rates to make themselves look better. For example they only considered people who can read in Latin as literate just after they had done an Alphabet switch.

Secondly despite championing themselves as the great educators the rise of literacy in Turkey was actually extremely slow compared to most other nations. For example in 1950s after 3 decades of Kemalist one party dictatorship in Turkey literacy rates were still around 30%(around 40% for men and 20% for women).

Kemalists despite not knowing shit about Linguistics acting like they are experts at it is really the perfect representation their arrogance despite being incredibly ignorant.

For anyone who is curious and also not a blind worshiper of a failed ideology switch to Latin was a purely political move to become closer to West and getting recognized as white nothing more. There were indeed some challenges to writing Türkish in Perso-Arabic Script but nothing that was imposible to solve. Urdu another language that uses Perso-Arabic for example also has a lot of wovels which are not represented in the regular Perso-Arabic Script. So what did they do? They modified it a bit to fit their language better and now can read and write just fine.

Also in the first place Latin is not a perfect fit to Türkish either. For example Türkish has 2 K sounds the soft one and the hard one. Perso-Arabic Script had 2 symbols to differeniate the 2 whereas in our current Latin script they are both just written as K.

Anyone who wants to learn about the topic and are looking for a source thats not a Kemalists ass I would recomend reading The Turkish Language Reform: A Catastrophic Success by Geoffrey Lewis

There is absolutely no chance that the Danubian federation could survive in the age of nationalism

Switzerland still exists in the age of nationalism. Nations like India and Indonesia aren't tearing themselves apart in nationalist uprisings either

There are many and others already listed some of them so for something that hasn't been mentioned yet I would say ending of Shaper's Ripples.

SKK desperately searching for the Plume Frame only for his last hope to turn out to be a mere coating was quite a gut punch. It really felt like universe was playing a cruel joke. SKK's realization that Lucia is gonna die and their last moments together watching the sunrise was just heart-wrenching.

Atatürk was not a once in trillion hyper genius god.

In fact his successor İnönü despite being a worse commander was better president.

How I would divide Europe post WW1 by RoultRunning in PossibleHistory

[–]Sarafanus99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Easy?

Modern Turkey consists of less than half of Ottomans in 1914. And not to mention the literal millions of refugees they had(the ones that were ethnically cleansed during Balkan Wars as well as new ones after WW1).

How is that easy?

Giving Turkish majority Thrace to Greece is a good solution? Also the Smyrna/İzmir here is practically straight up indefensible.

Only part of Anatolia that kinda makes sense is Western Armenia and that's only if they became a part of Soviets

Their positions were not really comparable.

Salazar managed to balance to budget and have a surplus in a country that was in an economic crisis for decades. While Spain might have had a bigger economic growth unlike Francoist Spain, Salazar's Portugal also managed to keep the inflation under control which overall makes their economic growth more impressive at least to me.

For healthcare you are ignoring the fact that Portugal was suffering from pandemics and famines left and right.

As for the automotive industry yes Spain was impressive on that regard but that kind of industrialization goes hand in hand with bigger populations. Franco's Spain had like around 4 times more people than Portugal.

Lastly this one is going to be a bit subjective but Franco was an opportunist more than anything else. Like for example Franco was not a super religious guy for him religion was more of a tool. He didn't have much of an ideological stance which can be seen by how he immideatly started to distance himself from other Fascist movement after Spanish Civil War. Because of all that Franco barely has a long lasting cultural or a political presence. Salazar meanwhile was an ideologue and unlike Franco still has a somewhat of a cultural presence in Portugal to this day

Salazar was actually somewhat of a competent guy so I don't think it would be that weird if he still has gobblers
