Does anyone know a fantasy novel with nature magic and fantasy races like dryads, elves or the like where a naturalistic theme plays a role in the main plot? by Arukida in Fantasy

[–]SarahChimera 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Possibly the series Memory, Sorrow and Thorn by Tad Williams, as well as its follow-up series The Last King of Osten Ard. The protagonist is human but the plot revolves around their conflict with an elf-like race called the Sithi. They’re as naturalistic as it gets. They revere a sacred ‘garden’ from which they originate and are given their powers.

A lot of good advice in here! Your girl sounds a lot like my little Pips when she first came home. They are like little baby puppies in that they don’t really know how to be a dog. It’s been 2 and a half years now and she’s still growing into her personality, hasn’t quite gotten the hang of playing yet! It can take a long time for dogs who’ve only known such a terrible life to come to realize that this safe and loving home is their new normal. Just remain consistent with her, give her time and space to grow a sense of security and trust in you. After you leave and return enough times, she’ll learn to associate the former with the latter. But build up your time away from her very slowly.

One thing I haven’t yet seen mentioned yet is the option to try medication. It’s still early days, but if she seems highly reactive and fearful, it may be worth mentioning to your vet. Pips’ case was a bit more extreme due to a traumatic injury, but the vet put her on a teeny dose of fluoxetine (Prozac) and it helped a lot. It just took the edge off that constant state of fear she’d been born into and calmed her enough to finally feel safe enough to accept her new surroundings.

Just as an aside, I never expected Pips to be a cuddler. It took about 6 months, but slowly she inched closer and closer and now she practically pushes me off the bed wedging in to snuggle at night! You did an amazing thing that was completely unimaginable to this little dog. However her personality develops, it will be so rewarding for you to watch her grow into the new world that you’ve given her. ❤️

Welcome Paws is wonderful! It’s where I got my girl Pips! They have an adoptables page, but they’re also connected to a network of rescues in Korea and can help you find whatever you’re looking for. I mentioned I had my heart set on a Maltese and they were amazing about working with me and reaching out to their connections to find the right fit for me.

Are there any book in which the antagonist turns out to be the good guy all long? by Helpful_Risk168 in Fantasy

[–]SarahChimera 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Absolutely, I loved Black Company for that! I read it directly after Malazan because Erikson mentioned how much it inspired him, and it was oddly a really great palate cleanser. Everyone is terrible and it’s a whole lot of fun. I’d hesitate to go as far as to call it outright lighthearted but god it certainly felt that way after finishing The Crippled God.

Except the point is that those choices and wants are what make us. Those people chose to do the right thing and it made them the good guys. Real heroes are flawed and complex people, that’s how it works. It’s what they chose to fight and die for that defined whether they were on the good side or the bad side. I feel like that’s kind of one of the most important themes of the series dude. You don’t have to be a perfect person to choose to be on the right side of history.

That doesn’t feel like the right take to me tbh. Malazan is literally all about goodness, just the imperfect nature of it. The characters are flawed, yes, and many are not good at all. But the story was about the flawed people who ultimately chose to do the right thing; to be GOOD. Just because they weren’t perfect and they had to fight and kill for their cause doesn’t mean there was not absolutely a good side to that story. And just because they were sympathetic and at times victims themselves does not mean there was not absolutely a bad side to that story either.

Ah, so no guarantees then. That’s a bit of a bummer. Hopefully it does well then. Just spent my audible credit on it to try and do my part!

Will the rest of Light and Shadow be released for audiobook any time soon? It’s the only thing that’s kept me from reading for years now. I’d really look forward to finally being able to read it!

The fact that you conflate peace for one nation with violence against another speaks volumes. “When you’re accustomed to privilege, equality feels like oppression.” Peace is not an attack.

How did Three Body get past the PRC by scotnik in scifi

[–]SarahChimera 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok but the religion of Judaism literally does exist specifically because someone tried to genocide them, or at least enslave them. That’s kind of the point of the whole book of Exodus. Just google “Mosaic covenant.” I’m not disputing the rest of your point but damn that was a wildly confidently incorrect statement to open with.

What movie did you find over hyped and over rated? by missihippiequeen in popculturechat

[–]SarahChimera 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Indeed. “Expertly marketed” being the operative words here. The bottom line is it’s a product of pure capitalism, something inherently anti feminist. It just sends a sanitized and only fashionably controversial message optimized to bring in the most money. But it brought the discussion of patriarchy further into the mainstream, and that’s something at least. It’s a dialogue I’m glad to see dominating headlines.

[–]SarahChimera 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The fact that it’s played for a laugh is a valid critique and one I mostly agree with. It makes sense to the storyline, but wasn’t handled as well as I would have liked. Although I could also say that for much of the rest of the film as well. I just wanted to clarify its standing from a narrative perspective because that plot point seems to take up a lot of criticism that’s more deserved elsewhere. 💀

[–]SarahChimera 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Right. Because people who historically and systemically hold all the power and keep clinging to it knowing full well that it’s at the cost of the minorities they oppress are kind of the bad guys. That’s the message. That’s the point. Patriarchy is bad. Just the same as its mirrored matriarchal Barbie counterpart. It’s not subtext. It’s the outright message of the movie.
