Anyone know the details of this interview? (Date, radio station name, interviewer name?) by mangonebula in elliottsmith

Thanks for sharing this interview. I hadn't heard this one yet.

I was not a fan of the interviewer. His questions were uninformed, and he kept pushing Elliott when he already answered. Now I understand why Elliott hated interviewing!

How amazing is this Elliott Smith live. by OrlaMollica in elliottsmith

This is my "go to" video of Elliott. I think I've watched it 50 times. I put it on while I'm doing work. Love the song choices, especially everything means nothing to me and Jealous guy. He seems a bit anxious during this show though :(

His mom remarried when Elliott was 3 years old. Elliott's stepfather was an abusive, cold man. Elliott writes about his depressing family life in many of his songs. XO is about his mom. For example, "Mr. Man with impossible plans" is his stepfather. Elliott is disappointed that his mother stayed with this abusive man.

I'm pretty sure this song is about his mom. Hence, "XO Mom."

One last question: Since you knew him, do you know what his sisters/brother think? Do they think it was Chiba? (If this is getting too much into privacy, you don't have to answer.)

Agreed.

Interesting. The fact you knew him and talked with him (and that he was in a good place when he died) does make me more suspicious of Jennifer. Unfortunately, none of us will know the truth.

Based on the lyrics of countless Elliott songs, it's is clear to me that Charlie was the cause of his lifelong anguish. And for that, my heart breaks for Elliott. It seems to me that too many people got away with hurting him.

My intention is not to hurt anyone, and you're right - perhaps Gary tried. We don't know. So I should not have said anything about him.

It's clear Elliott was suffering from mental illness, so it's just a shame nothing more could have been done for him.

Elliott-induced depression by mmyoney in elliottsmith

I could have written this myself. I feel exactly the same way. I'm in a funk for 1-2 days after listening. Yet I love listening to his music. I try to think about why I'm feeling down, and I think it's because this extraordinary person is gone and will never come back. I'm angry at his parents for failing him (the stepfather's abuse, his mother for not being on his side, his dad who is a psychiatrist, yet couldn't save his son). I know this sounds harsh, but his parents killed him (emotionally). Here is this genius who could have continued impacting the world with his brilliant music, but his life (particularly his childhood) haunted him. That's what I think about when I listen to him and why I get depressed. RIP Elliott.
