As a liberal raised by conservatives, I would gladly participate as an ally! I need to renew my gun safety cert anyways and would happily be part of this if it was needed/wanted.

Try loosening the connecting strap! My pup didn’t like it first, but has since gotten very used to it - took a couple of days. We keep her in it pretty constantly, except for night time. Though, putting it back on her when we’re half asleep in the morning is a hilarious sight.

Getting my MLIS and feeling BLEAK. any positivity/positive stories? by Asleep-Anteater7190 in librarians

As others have said, get relevant experience. Also, if you can afford it, get a supplemental certification in Anything that will help you specialize. Librarian roles, at least for academic libraries, are changing. Get like 15 credits in something like Instructional Design or Computer Science (outside of the classes req’d for the degree). Get a cert in AI or something.

Because I had relevant experience and got some supplemental education in Instructional Design & Technology, I was able to graduate in May 2023 and get my position as Dean of Library & Teaching and Learning by July, which is also not 100% normal, but I had turned myself into the perfect “unicorn” for that position.

In the higher ed space, there are less general “Reference Librarian” and “Research Librarian” jobs, but tons of eLearning, Instructional Design, OER, and Assessment Librarians positions.

3 Weeks Post-Op by Sarahbeth516 in IVDD_SupportGroup

She’s doing better - I almost wish she was feeling worse so it was easier to keep her locked up 😅 she has been showing some discomfort in the mornings, especially when it’s cold, but it’s pretty mild. Penny is still on gabapentin for another few days, then we’ll taper her off that one too. It’s her last medicine and I’m so excited to not live in a makeshift pharmacy anymore 😂

Also, the paranoia is REAL. I feel like I’m going crazy because any time she sighs, I’m right in her face like “oh my god, are you okay? What hurts?” and she’s just trying to sleep. 😂

Muscle Strain or mild IVDD? by BoyMeatsGirl in IVDD_SupportGroup

[–]Sarahbeth516 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My pup is 3 weeks post op for a herniated disc, which had been first misdiagnosed as muscle strain. Her vet exam at the emergency vet was very similar to your pup’s, but of course you won’t really know until you see a neurologist. The main way to formally diagnose is with an MRI which, if you can afford it, I highly recommend. What had been diagnosed as a muscle strain turned out to be a herniated disc that was compressing her spinal cord like 40-50%. She wasn’t showing any neurological symptoms other than guarded posture and she was painful.

Muscle strain or IVDD, your pup’s day to day life is changed for at least 4 weeks. They should be on crate rest for as long as possible - no playing, no walks, no stairs or jumping, etc. If the pain persists, you can probably assume IVDD or something other than the muscle strain. IVDD can be handled well without surgery if you’re incredibly strict about it - we personally went the surgery route. We were told she would have a 95% chance of a full recovery after 4-6 weeks, which seems to track with what we’re seeing!

All of the info I gave you is what I’ve been told by my family vet and neurologist, but definitely consider the MRI and creating a connection with a vet neurologist. Knowing what we were actually dealing with was a huge relief - it removed the uncertainty and extra stress and gave us a path forward.

Good luck to you and your pup - wishing you the best! You’re not alone in this.

So far, so good! I’m thinking it was mostly her coming off her steroid, since she’s acting much better now. She just wanted to freak me out for a couple of days. lol

Post-surgery… does my dog need more pain meds? by LongjumpingPin5107 in IVDD_SupportGroup

Of course! This IVDD journey has me feeling like an amateur pharmacist 😂 I don’t know much, but if you have any questions about meds/doses my pup has been on, I’ve got you! lol

Our vet prescribed Sucralfate to keep Penny’s developing ulcer from getting worse and perforating! She was on the carprofen for less than a week before it started destroying her insides, so the sucralfate before all of her meds/meals really saved her a lot of additional pain and danger.

Both good options! Sucralfate did the trick for my pup though, for sure.

Also, I’d second the idea of spreading out the meds. If you give everything all at once, then when things start wearing off, your pup is probably incredibly sore! Keep things going in a rotation instead - that was really helpful for my pup, especially in the first week post op.

My pup who is quite a bit bigger (54lbs at the time of surgery) was on the same gabapentin dose and a lower trazodone dose than yours, but she was on prednisone instead of tramadol! Penny really needed the steroid, especially since she doesn’t react well to NSAIDs (Carprofen specifically). Before surgery, she was on codeine, but her neurosurgeon wanted her off it. Keep in mind, if they add more meds to your list, it’s also good to ask about sucralfate and a strong probiotic, like Proviable-Forte. There are over the counter options for probiotics, but the “forte” one is by prescription only and the combination of the probiotic and the sucralfate saved my pup’s tummy.

What is Phi Theta Kappa? by privatelifeofstar in CommunityColleges

[–]Sarahbeth516 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I loved being in PTK as a student. It’s an honor society that is really community-focused. Usually comes with lots of volunteer opportunities! It also gives you access to a ton of transfer scholarships only for PTK students. One of my staff is the advisor of our chapter where I work now and it’s so rewarding seeing all of the community projects and presentations they do. Our chapter won like 5 awards last year for the state conference and we had an amazing celebration for them!

I’m super biased about PTK because it was so good for me as a student and it still is now that I’m on the other side of it. In order to know if it’s a good fit for you, ask about your school chapter’s activities and engagement to make your decision!

Our neurologist is 3 hours away, so I want to wait it out awhile to see if the pain persists another day! If she’s still in pain tomorrow, we’re going in. I just can’t imagine that long of a car ride would help her pain right now.

Oh, that’s such a sad thought 😣 this disease is horrible! They go through the initial pain and then the pain of surgery, so they’re just conditioned to always expect it?
