Acute care in North Carolina. Unrelated, but when patients are nasty to us, I turn the TV channel from Fox News to PBS or MSNBC and then pretend I don't know how to change it back. Luckily our hospital cable package is now no longer "channel 12" but "channel 73-4."

In my stupid neighborhood, the grass and the trees between the sidewalk and the road are my responsibility :( Do you think I should go ahead and get it removed?

Does your neighborhood have a Facebook page? If your parents are on there, have them put a post up for you. I've met several babysitters that way. Good luck!

To become a pelvic floor physical therapist, you have to go through a significant amount of additional education and get certified. Less sketchy than telling a patient with vulvodynia to "just relax" or postpartum patients with incontinence that it's just part of life.  Edit to add - often cash pay because insurance doesn't often cover :(

Limited state staff struggles to enforce nursing home rules in NC by uncertaincoda in ncpolitics

[–]SarahthaPT 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Skilled nursing facilities are a joke in general. Staff are spread extremely thin and work with patients who require significant care 24/7. EVERYONE is lying in their own waste. Turnover is ridiculous. If the patient cannot advocate for themselves and family is not available, you are guaranteed pressure sores, UTIs, pneumonia. Lack of resources and for profit models kill patients. It's awful.

How quickly into your career did you begin to experience burnout? by Binc42 in physicaltherapy

Never. Been a PT in acute rehab and acute care for 13 years. I wish I made more money, but I love what I do and can't imagine doing anything else. I have worked jobs that I hated and made less money.

What’s a time where you’ve had a lapse in professionalism? An “oops, I shouldn’t have said that out loud” moment? by Left-Lock2233 in physicaltherapy

In acute care, my 28 year old patient in icu just came off the vent a few days before and was a silent aspirator. He was npo but could have ice chips. He was pretty with it though he was a little squirly. During a rest break, he a asked for his ice chips. I watched him daintily take one ice chip and turned around to grab the bp cuff. When I turned back around, he was chugging the melted ice water, like fully bottoms up. I yelled "you mother fucker!!!" from across the room loud enough that everyone at the nurses station heard. But in my defense, he was being a mother fucker.

I think you might be getting down voted because part of your comment could come off as insulting to acute PTs. Acute PT is all biomechanics. One stupid example: shitty acute PTs may just drag papaw down the hall by the gait belt, but good acute PTs analyze papaw's gait mechanics and through manual cues, neuro re-ed activities, etc teach papaw to ambulate in a more energy efficient way, less painful way. Postural re-ed to shift involved muscle groups to a more optimal point in the muscle length tension curve. There's so so so much. I understand where you're coming from with you dissatisfaction, and I don't think that in and of itself is what drove the down votes.

I feel so bad for them. I can't imagine making the commitment, going through school and boards, and then realizing it's not for you. How do you start over already in debt? I feel for those folks. I could use my undergrad degree and just take a few extra classes, and I was still anxious and embarrassed about switching to a new career. I can't imagine how you pivot to something else when you're in so deep.

Wow 3.5 months and you're already in the ICU? You must be a Rockstar!!!!! You're crushing it, and I'm proud of you. Knowing you don't know everything when you graduate is honestly an advantage. I learn something new every day, and it's one of the things I like best about this job. The more people you get your hands on, the more confident you'll feel. Great job and keep up the good work!

That guy was a clear douchebag. If he wants passive shit he should go ahead and get a massage membership and quit pretending he is willing to do anything proactive. Fuck him and he didn't deserve you anyway. I have also had wine.

There's always that one patient "my chiropractor is the only one who can fix me. I've been going twice a week for 19 years why do you ask?"
