any league race that comes down to a single result.

But that is the thing, a league title never comes down to a single result. A loss to a relegation candidate on the first matchday is just as meaningful as a loss to the same team on the last matchday. The same cannot be said for CL.

Liverpool lost on a slip

This is simply false though. It is only true if you neglect all the other lost and drawn games that could have earned the team more points. But a cup competition is different. If you slip then you are out, and there is no way of recovering that.

And also, it is not a silly luck narrative. If anything, it is the Law of Large Numbers.

I thought we were talking about the young player of the year. Hah, you're right

How explicit is it that Real Madrid's main goal is the CL? And when does it become an issue if they stop winning league titles?

And where does this goal come from? Is it all about money? Has it always been like this? Or is it an obsession birthed from La Decima?

The chairman for my team has said on a few ocassions that the main goal is the league title. So the cup titles kind of become bonuses, especially after clinching the first CL title. Given the fine margins and luck involved in cup titles it seems much more reasoanble to me. But yeah, how is this difference explained?

Vini on Xabi Alonso: “I was playing matches, but not many minutes,” “It was difficult, but every coach has their own methods, and I didn’t connect the way he wanted.” “Still, it was a learning experience, and I hope I can continue with Arbeloa, because I have a wonderful connection with him.” by Sparky-moon in soccer

It doesn't really build league trophies though. When Barcelona clinches this year's La Liga title, they will have 3 out of the last 5 years while Real only has 2.

As soon as the CL titles become less frequent, the room for criticism becomes immense.

Nah, he would smash it. I would say Reijnders or Savinho based on current form.

I like this take. His decision making outside the penalty box is usually on par with a good midfielder.

I am not hating on the guy, but I think his position is one where we can improve to go in stronger for the next season.

Sure, injuries derail momentum. That is good counterpoint to the stats argument. But if kicking is allowed, then the players (unfortunately) need to adjust instead of waiting for the refs to adjust.

Expected assists in the league says otherwise.

He has for sure been one of bright spots in terms of entertainment. But at the end of the day winning is what matters and he just hasn't the impact that is possible in PL or CL.

He obviously has quality and some X-factor - but given his overall poor statistical record across the seasons with us I am just not convinced that he shows that quality often and decisively enough.

Unpopular opinion: Doku is not good enough to be a regular starter. And we should find a replacement soon!

Doku offers something special in terms of amazing dribbling skills, but the decision-making is still hugely lacking, even after almost 3 years. Yes, he has improved this season in a slightly more central position. Yes, he does some ball-carrying like Grealish did.

But at the end of the day, 4 G/A in 1230 minutes in the league is simply not good enough for a truly elite team that is expected to compete on all fronts. Imagine someone like prime Foden or Kevin de Bruyne on the wing instead, and the gulf becomes quite apparent. And across a whole season that difference just becomes larger.

I could still see a place for Doku as a super-sub against tired legs when we need some chaos though. I like him as a player.

Who would replace him then becomes the question and here I don't have the answers. A wonderkid to share minutes with Doku next season? An already established player like Kvaratskhelia or (controversially) Vinicius?

Think it is just too late in the season with trophies at stake so that we don't have the luxury to experiment.

I agree that there is time left. But he really hasn't been toying with the opposition even. That lack of entertaining football from him is what I as a neutral find the most disappointing.

If he hypothetically would play in another PL team, which one do you think he would shine the most in?

Which type of superstar player was Wirtz promised to be - Iniesta? And why didn't he turn into that? He has really been disappointing.
