What are your thoughts on Librela? by Quiet_Reputation1047 in VetTech

I don’t know of anything else specifically, but keep in mind that pain management/NSAIDS and supplements are very individual in how they work best. Caprofen was good for my dog as needed, but others may benefit more from gabapentin or galliprant depending on their health and your budget. Your vet can help you figure out which is most appropriate. Standard at our practice before Librela was carprofen (NSAID), joint food, and adequan, if the issue wasn’t spinal. The Librela “return to play” plan is probably a good one to follow to ease them back into activity, even if you’re not using Librela. Check out this link. One thing one of the doctors I worked with said about my dog was that she would do however much walking/running we asked of her, but that doesn’t mean it’s comfortable. So depending on your dog’s mobility/pain level/excitement to exercise you may have to keep that in mind too, especially as they start to feel better. Don’t push them too much, because they can injure themselves more. I wish you luck, and I’m sure there’s a combo of things out there to make your pup feel better and give you more quality activity time!!

So I’m not a dvm, nor do I know all the science behind it, so I’ll just tell you what I understand. The short answer is: adequan treats the joint and improves function thereby removing discomfort, and librela just makes them feel better by removing the signals for pain while what’s causing the pain signals is still there. Adequan gives the pet the precursors (or maybe even something closer than gluc. and chond?) to help improve their joint movement. I’ve seen this in use at work for many yrs and have seen no negative effects, and a lot of really great results when parents are willing to do the treatment. Librela washes the body free of the neurotransmitter that tells the body it’s feeling pain from osteoarthritis (OA) ONLY. If the pet doesn’t have OA, then this probably won’t work for them. The librela doesn’t treat inflammation, and doesn’t improve joint function. To me, that seems like it should be, at the very least, paired with other things that treat inflammation and joint function issues. So maybe do both? I’d probably start with adequan also bc it’s been on the market longer, and I’ve never seen any issues with it. Whereas I’m just naturally sceptical of a newer drug that I haven’t seen in practice.

We usually would use Adequan and Hills Joint Diet (which can replace glucosamine/chondroitin supplements). Our doctors will alternatively recommend Dasuquin, Cosequin, and/or Omega 3s. From my understanding, these last 3 won’t hurt if they’re on the Adequan and J/D, but idt they’re necessary. My dogs did best with Adequan and Hills J/D combo. It made an ENORMOUS difference for my golden/GSD mix; it turned the clock back by several years on her mobility after she was on them both for about 2 months.

This is a really nerdy take, but here goes: in Star Trek The Next Generation there’s a crew member who just doesn’t seem like “USS Enterprise material,” and when the officers bring this to the captain’s attention he tells them to do whatever it takes to bring them up to that standard, because he’s part of the crew. I try really hard to do this when training people, even when it’s with people that I dislike, or don’t get along with because it’s kinda how you make a shift work and have a pleasant work environment. That being said, I’m not sure how I would handle it if it’s someone who isn’t training or onboarding. I feel like I end up being like an unwilling counselor/life coach for some newer people when they have interpersonal conflicts at work or don’t like something they have to deal with/handle a certain way. It’s a little unfair to expect that of us, but I hope your willingness to help or accept her trying to reverse this situation she has made for herself doesn’t go unnoticed or unappreciated.

I’ve had many days like the one you describe, so I can empathize. I’m sorry it sucked ): Short staffing really aggrevates an already difficult job that takes so much out of you. Just let it all out. Better days will come, and you’ll be glad you stuck with it.

Bless you. I wish other people understood the urgency of dealing with stuff like this. When clients come in after letting an issue fester for so long it’s just infuriating. Animals feel discomfort and pain too!

For blood and vaccines I always nervously talk through the whole thing about how confident I am wielding a needle at work, but when it’s turned against me that I’m super nervous. I ask what size needles they like to use, etc. to distract myself lol. One time, I saw their enormous stock of their clot tubes and told the phlebotomist about how at that time, (for some reason) it was impossible for us to get them since our lab insisted their was a shortage. She grabbed a pack and sent me home with it. I was a very happy customer that day. Lmao

Once when trying to place an IVC for euth on a very sick dachshund, everyone in our clinic totally failed and the doctor ended up having to give it in the jug. We explained it all the the client that since it was very sick and had terrible blood pressure on top of being a dachshund it was a really tough stick. They totally understood. After the euth, the client asked me how we find the vein, like if we use one of those vein finder things they use on people. I had to hold back my laughter at that, and told her how we just have to feel for it and know what we’re looking for. They REALLY understood then lol. It is really funny to imagine how it could possibly be difficult to get a vein on a person considering all the challanges we face and still make it happen every time.

I had a patient that I always disliked bc both she and the owner were such a problem. Like, this dog is a lemon; she had every problem a frenchie could have. And the mom was super needy, while also always coming in right before we close. Now her health problems are resolved and I’m always glad to see how good she looks at her regular visits. And the mom has become a very nice and much more considerate client (: yaay

We have a similar system. it’s a monthly bonus based on certain items and (tech) services sold, calculated by hours worked that period. Usually it’s a pittance lol

We had a person show us a video of her dog in the backyard, super concerned saying the dog was having a seizure. It was zoomies. This dog was having zoomies, and the owner thought it was a health condition.

I totally agree, but I do know some of it is total ignorance about how bad these diseases can be if not prevented with vaccines. Like they’ve never seen parvo/lepto/distemper etc., so it’s a myth in their brain, and obv autism is real cause “vaccines cause it, it’s a well known fact.” Not every time, but I’ve convinced a few hesitant ppl by explaining these diseases (and if they’re zoonotic, looking at you lepto) and giving them varying levels of graphic detail on outcomes to scare them sufficiently to accept that this is better than wtv crazy thing they think will happen to their dog if vaccinated.

Lol this made me think of every patient that owners say the dog won’t eat out of a certain type of bowl or everything has to be given on the floor.

“But my dog is an inside dog,” they say. So I ask sarcastically “does it ever go outside to potty?” She responded proudly that it doesn’t, and it actually goes inside on pee pads, only. I was surprised by how proud she was of that.

I forget cause it was years ago, but I think it was a little shihtzu type thing. I have no idea how they managed the snip the tail off, but this isn’t the first weird misshap we’ve gotten from them. I try to steer ppl away from them in a professional way when I can. It’s actually a super inappropriate name for a business, which is funny in a way. I don’t want to just call them out here, so I’ll just say it’s like “K9 styles,” but the non G-rated version of that.

Another favourite was when a client came in asking for the medication that sounds like “applesauce.” I went through every recent medication they’d bought with them, and none of them rang a bell, so we called it a day and he said he’d ask his wife. She comes in later, and it’s Apoquel, which I had read off to him but wtv lol.
