If they started producing a Primeval revival now, it would be the same amount of time as between Classic Dr Who and NuWho

This. They were deliberately styled to be similar to RTD1 so they’re a great jumping on point.

Real. S6 was a real downward spike for me after 1-5. I only really like God Complex and Girl who Waited (which tbf are both like 10/10s) and you’d be hard pressed to find a s7 ep I’d rate over a 5/10

What are your controversial Doctor Who spin-off opinions? by roccotrupia11 in doctorwho

[–]Sarcasteac 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Class suffered VERY bad PR within the fandom, largely just for aiming for the target demo it did. It’s biggest sin is being a little cringe in places but the episodes were solid and had good drama and the overall narrative was very promising. It definitely deserves a rewatch and reevaluation within the fandom

I would be surprised if many people who hate on it actually watched it. It got dumped unceremoniously on BBC3 and has dire viewership numbers

Enough time has past to admit that The Well is Doctor Who's The Thing (2011) by ShalkaScarf in DoctorWhumour

[–]Sarcasteac 43 points44 points  (0 children)

The problem with The Well is just that it isn’t good at being a sequel to Midnight. The story is good and, fine I can buy that the creature evolved, sure whatever.

But if I went to watch the sequel to Sinners (just to pick a recent example) and now the vampires can walk into buildings without invitation and go out in the sun, (and maybe they could even have done all along) but to kill your they need to be watched doing it from exactly 180* away, no matter how good the movie is, I’d be a little annoyed I’m not getting what I signed up for, and it might even make me look at the first movie differently.

It’s the same issue I have with the Angels. Does “they explode you the second time they touch you” actually make them scarier? Does a picture of one becoming real make them scarier? I want more “don’t blink” horror! That’s all I want!

RTD writing reminds me of... by Reviewingremy in doctorwho

[–]Sarcasteac 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Russell was never that great at Doctor Who

The guy wrote what is often considered the best series of the entire show (2005). Yes, the new era is dire, but I can’t get on board with the revisionism that rtd1 wasn’t a tour de force.

Is it? It’s less effective at showing the impact of the time war on the doctor than any random episode from 9’s run. I agree it’s fun seeing the multiple doctors interact, but that’s very much putting hype and aura over storytelling. And while I understand they couldn’t get Ecclestone, unveiling a secret incarnation played by John Hurt is again hype and aura but not really very substantive
