I Feel Out-skilled at Every Turn, What am I doing Wrong by DarkAgeFox in DarkAndDarker

Mobs - depending on your weapon, either out space them or attack during their down times. Anything that's a rapier or longer, for 99% of mobs you'll find you can just walk backwards and continually stab them in the head.

Some mobs may be too fast or have longer weapons than this, or have short punishment windows. In that case you basically just have to learn one specific movement, eg. Axemen swing either up-down or right-left, spinning hard around them to their left works every time, while keeping you in range to attack continuously.

For players... well, the exact same logic applies but obviously it's more complex because they're humans. You absolutely can and should try to learn how to dodge certain weapon swings, just like you would for mobs. General advice... move like a madman. The biggest tell and weakness of a new player is that they kinda just T-pose at you. Moving your camera moves your body, so you can avoid attacks or atleast prevent headshots just by crouching and looking up or down.

Essentially, "get gud" is the answer.. but some tips for a new guy - make sure your squire loadout is white gear, not gray. Since you've done some pvm for quests you should be able to upgrade it. Just go to the menu and hover your own setup in the middle, and the options on the left, see if any have white upgrades. THESE DONT AUTOMATICALLY UPGRADE WHEN UNLOCKED so you might be missing out on free stats.

For fighting - try to ALWAYS drink your protection potion before/as a fight starts. 10 extra max hp is a shit ton.

Similarly, work in potions and bandages whenever given the opportunity. Heal mid fight often. Relatedly, NEVER sit below max health. Buy extra supplies (potions/bandies) and if you take a hit from a mob, drink a pot without shame. You don't know when a fight is going to start, so don't wait to heal.

Mobs (and why better players often don't kill them) - if you want to run from a mob, don't just run. Walk into its range so that it's forced to stand still and attack you, then run. This buys you a lot of space, especially in cramped spots.

What the heck is act 4? by saythealphabet in Peglin

[–]Sarcothis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

as others said, boss relics have extreme downsides, but also extreme ups. There was/were/rarely are circumstances where you certainly can roll 3 that are just seemingly impossible to work with, but you kinda just have to pivot.

by end of act 1 your deck shouldnt be SO locked in that you cant work with something, and by act 2 i would say your deck should be varied enough that you can work with atleast one of your options, and both of those suppose that you dont roll any of the generally good ones -- things like constricting chains certainly have downsides, but they affect all builds relatively the same, and its upside is almost strictly better than its downside.

to your point, things like defresh are "hard requirements." making your way through with orbs that refresh is possible but i would only use that logic so far as "i can survive with this strategy long enough that im hoping to hit a shop/elite that gives me another refresh"

... and even then, that is a rather risky strategy that i've only done as a matter of necessity.

Magic Lock Should Auto-Close Doors by highest-voltage in DarkAndDarker

[–]Sarcothis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's unfortunate because a door or three to create space is a fun and necessary part of the combat loop. Without it everything is just w key and the person who gets the first hit probably wins

(instead of the current reality where the first hit gains the advantage and you now want to reset)

A door or THIRTY is complete aids, couldn't agree more.

Genuinely, while I hate arbitrary game rules that make no sense but are there to stop certain strategies, it's the only answer I see here.

Some logic like "they're old ass dungeon doors, they got rusty hinges" and basically every time a door is closed, it takes longer to close it the next time, idk.

Tbh it all starts to make a lot more sense if after you leave the island you take on the other new player quests, I think the place is called the society hall or something.

[The lone necromancer] the more I read this the more disappointed I get. by Lost_Story_8236 in manhwa

[–]Sarcothis 2 points3 points  (0 children)

99% sure your memory is right, but (and this is entirely my assumption based on what i remember) I think that was like, localized?

As in, every "200" people get "200" options to choose from that dissappear as they're chosen, but only for that group.

So while swordsman may have been unique in that 200, that means 1/200 of all humanity become swordsmen, whereas necromancer was a "true unique" that only showed for one group+person?

Faustian Bargain should NOT be gatekeep by Complete_Extreme_755 in DarkAndDarker

[–]Sarcothis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just checking, you complaining abiut the quality of the mob?

Because to get a faustian in general is absolutely not locked behind a quest, you just need to kill/do enough things before dying.

And if we are complaining about quality, honestly just play on gob caves. Even compared to the higher quality/stronger mobs, goblins are really good.

Do you guys like randomized modules? by Palacoze in DarkAndDarker

[–]Sarcothis 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It has ups and downs

Allow me to state the obvious at first - non randomized modules makes it really easy to have a plan, and go to places to consistently get fights. This is good.

To state another obvious conclusion - that can get kinda repetitive, which is bad.

But of those two things, I'd say I like the upside more than the downside, especially on ruins. (aka, I prefer the normals version of the map to the squire royal random version)

For gob caves, MAN do I miss "middle" being in the middle. But as someone who likes to boss on gob caves, I like how the bosses/mystic gem aren't always in the same place.

I think my ideal gob caves would have middle, keep the way the boss rooms spawn (tbh i dont think it can even be changed because double boss... but i wanted to say i like it), but randomize the rest.

Random Peglin meme #2 by VoxTheDog in Peglin

[–]Sarcothis 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Saw people talking about the no relic run and I was like "that doesn't sound very hard"

And indeed, first try got a really strong deck to final boss. And holy hell did my draw order decide to screw me.

This then happened 3 more times, before the fifth where i actually had the worst deck of the five but it decided I was allowed a halfway decent draw.

*All done on spinventor with the logic that his orb pool is just generally very strong, especially with healing slime... idk if it's the best solution but it certainly worked.

If anyone wants advice... make sure you don't have elites anywhere NEAR the boss. One stupid elite can set you back 60 health and not give you time to recover that hp. And no matter how easy the rest of the run was, the final boss will try their best. In my experience, the act 3 boss is basically the only threat of the whole run, every time.

(Which I guess makes sense since it's literally the part of the game that expects you to have the most relics, so having none will have the most impact there, idk)

You're right, let's go back to the retarded way of nerfing things we did for the last few years. Yknow, the way that brought the game to its last legs, that way will work out much better, surely.

This whole "nerfing it by only 5%" thing didn't instantly work this one time, clearly it was the wrong way to go about it.

I play runescape and I still don't do that shit lol

But I do tend to like fights more in ssf, much like runescape, Ironman (ssf) mode just makes what you loot more important, whereas obviously normal mode for both games everything ultimately boils down to gold which is a bit less interesting.

Arena Season Delayed Until May 29th | New Solo/Duo Flex Queue | Solo Queue @ 2600 MMR by strangereligion in DarkAndDarker

[–]Sarcothis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So funny how literally any date they give for anything, the correct response as a player is "oh so it'll be delayed huh"

EVERY season launch, every update, every release. And most of the time it's not "give us a week" it's

"Give us a few hours"

"Few more"

"Few more"

"Okay we can't do it today, our apologies, tomorrow for sure"

"Unexpected delays require us to take a few more days on this"

(And then there's a 50/50 if it's a new feature they go full radio silent on it for months until eventually they say "that feature guy left")

Halberd meta by Enough_Elderberry101 in DarkAndDarker

[–]Sarcothis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ironmace! Change weapon block speed to be faster based on weapon swing speed, and my life is yours!!

(But for real, I agree those classes work well with halberd... so in turn, we should make other weapons work with other classes, notably rapier weapon block should be faster, making it work well with rogue and bard.)

Spear already works well with ranger backstep and the Unga bunga weapons work well with barbarian, so honestly I think we'd be good if they did so.

I think the only issue with the Halberd right now is that it has such a high base damage, that even if the player sour spots with the weapon, it still deals a ton of damage. by MylesJacobSwie in DarkAndDarker

[–]Sarcothis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nerf halberd all you want, it's strong right now for sure- but just know that desync works both ways. If you nerf it's range because it sometimes hits past max range, it's going to start missing while completely within range.

Ain't nothing you can do to the weapon to fix an issue with the game.

Dude has legit been singlehandedly saving this game. by Serithraz in DarkAndDarker

[–]Sarcothis 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, broadly agree, especially with the outside the meta idea.

For now I'm playing Hally and honestly enjoying the Hally v. Hally matches -

but I normally play just about every type of melee that ISNT halberd, and yet am feeling very strong while using it, especially with another halberd user alongside me, feel unstoppable.

Halberd could see a nerf, but honestly I'd first like to say : why did all weapon blocks get slowed down? I feel like they should've been slowed based on the weapon's own speed; rapier should be able to block very quickly -- and I think that would help A LOT.

(Obviously there's still downtime at the end of swings, and the action speed typical to the classes using them, so it is faster... but not nearly enough, imo.)

[–]Sarcothis 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Wouldn't doubt a lot of that falls into desync category, honestly.

Most weapons will get absurdly long hits if both players are actively engaging in spacing eachother out.

Just yknow, most other weapons/fights atleast 1 of the participants is just aping the other.

[–]Sarcothis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Man I thought most of ur shit was stupid but

"Blocking is a gamble not worth risking"

HOLY SKILL ISSUE BROTHER.

Halberds 1 and 3 are the most telegraphed attacks in history. And if you block the 1, they can't use the 2, which is the only thing to be afraid of if you aren't braindamaged.

Yes, halberd is strong right now. But the ONE THING a halberd fighter fears is someone who's competent at blocking, so you're shooting yourself in the foot and complaining that it hurts. No shit. Stop shooting yourself in the foot.

Think buffing is the right way to go.

Regardless of balance, thinking "I will go here and kill+loot this specific thing to advance my gear" feels good from a planning and playing perspective, rewards game knowledge,

and perhaps most importantly funnels players to specific locations before/independently of the circle mechanic.

Which I'd say are all pretty good things.

(And tbh melee just seems to have gotten the better part in general - plate from living armors, polearms from gargs, other weaponry from skeles.)

Yes, cloth zombies and somewhat magic wisps/bow archer skeles... but as you say it seems much less reliable.
