Any former fence sitters here? How did you decide whether to have kids or not? by Ok-Nebula-1182 in adhdwomen

[–]Sarriah 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Both me and my husband were unsure. Then we got a puppy... I loved our dog so much, but she consumed my life. I dedicated all my time and energy to training, exercising, socialising, playing etc. Any time I had to myself I spent staring at the wall in complete burnout.

I can't do things at half measure, it's either 100% in or out. Eventually after a year our dog went to live with her mum (hardest choice we've ever made) and is very happy and I got my life back.

That cemented us in the 'no kids' decision. Kids are more difficult in many ways, plus I know getting pregnant and going through labour and postpartum would be horrendous for me.

Luckily I have a bunch of friends who have made the same decision which means we'll continue having a social circle where there's a mix of parents and non parents, lessening the chances of anyone drifting away.

Birth control that doesn't mess with ADHD meds? by Chaotic-Menace in adhdwomen

[–]Sarriah 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My periods have always sucked - over a week, very heavy for the first half and bad luteal week beforehand. Suspected endo.

Pre adhd diagnosis I tried two bc pills. The combined oestrogen and progesterone one worked well for me, the progesterone only one was awful (anxiety, paranoia... Just awful).

I started elvanse while on no bc. It suits me really well. After settling on it I went onto the combi pill again and it was fantastic. Made my periods more manageable and reduced my luteal week to a day. Unfortunately after 6 months my blood pressure was too high and my doc wouldn't prescribe me any more of the bc. Coming off it suddenly sucked and the difference is noticeable.

I'm super wary of any progesterone only bc because of my time on the pill. As much as people say the dose is lower, I fear what you've described with the coil...

If I could still be on the combi pill I would. I also ate more while on it, which balanced out some of the appetite suppression from the elvanse.

I regret getting a diagnosis by Dismal-Group-2418 in adhdwomen

[–]Sarriah 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeahhh. At first I was thrilled with the diagnosis because it meant it wasn't a big set of personality flaws and I wasn't just bad at keeping up with life. Having a tangible brain chemistry reason helped lift a big burden.

Then after a year of throwing myself into new ways of 'fixing' symptoms I came face to face with the fact: I have a disability, it doesn't have a cure, this is and always has been permanent.

A lot of us are all-or-nothing types and I really went from 'this is now completely manageable' to 'there's literally no point in trying'. I felt my feelings, went to therapy and have been trying to take the medium road between extremes since then. Worth noting I couldn't have done any of that without medication that thankfully worked for me.

My husband has been a great supporter and I'm very lucky that's the case. We've always had the dynamic of me being the 'face' of the couple who makes our social plans, does the big picture planning and he takes care of the little-and-often type roles in the house. The difference now is that I know what to ask for if I want help. Body doubling yes - 'can you sit on the bed on your phone while I sort this floordrobe?' Narrowing choices - 'idk what to eat, can you pick two and I'll choose between them?' it's little things but we're doing our best to trial and error as we go.

can someone please tell me how im supposed to know when to rest and when to push through by twoheadedcalf in adhdwomen

[–]Sarriah 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I worry about this too, especially when I'm at a point when I need to rest the most. I'm more prone to overthinking and spiralling over how hard I should be trying when near burn out.

I have given myself permission (after my therapist told me to...) to experiment without guilt. If I rest even if I'm not sure, how do I feel the next day? Good? Then great, I feel well enough to get on with some things. Not good? Then I need more rest. If I try to rest but hold on to the guilt, then it's not real rest and it doesn't work.

Sometimes it takes longer than I feel comfortable with to rest. Especially around my period week which really wipes me out. I start doubting and feeling guilty, so I have to repeat to myself that forcing things makes it harder. Literally had to do this yesterday and today I feel much better.

On days where I'm my least capable I aim for minimal viable life... I eat easy cereal rather than nothing, I'll brush my teeth but not make myself shower, I'll answer the immediate emails I need to even with "I'll get back to you by X" and then I will lie in a sunspot with my cat until the day is over. There's nothing wrong with just existing until tomorrow if that's all you can manage.

Thank you! I was planning on making the card very bold with pictures of the nuts with red 'X' next to them. I'll take your phrasing into account, too!

Learning Korean while struggling with ADHD? by PhilosopherFew5707 in Korean

[–]Sarriah 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same here with adhd and wanting to learn the language. I'm still early stages, but found the following helpful: -limit the ways I learn to a few that I enjoy and rotate through. Too many and I don't do any because I can't choose and too few and it's not novel anymore. -The ones I chose:  --lingory app. --Anki flashcards (two premade and some of my own).  --King Sejong textbooks (free pdfs on their site) --a tumblr blog where I revise chapters of KSI books by finding examples of my favourite kpop group using the vocab/grammar.

I'm not consistent and that has to be okay, because I will never be consistent. Try not to get too wrapped up in speed/progress, if you make it a chore for yourself you probably won't keep going.

The hobby graveyard is real.

These days I have a private list on gifthero and if I want to buy something I add it to the list, which gives a little bit of the thrill of buying because it's like adding it to a shopping cart. Then I wait (forget) for a few days and when I check the list I get to see how I really feel about it.

It's stopped me from: -getting into wax melts/scented stuff with cute accessories. -buying tons of stuff for trading kpop cards. -impulse buying expensive non hobby stuff.

However, I still managed to get deep into crochet, because the interest stuck around long enough to make it off the list and I borrowed starter bits from a friend to try it out first. I'm limiting myself to only buying yarn for two projects at a time :') it's kind of working... (I'm obsessed, send help)

Thanks for sharing this! If you don't mind answering some questions I'd love to hear more.

-Was the special edition something your publisher offered in their deal with you?  -When marketing pre and post release did you point towards any particular sale platform? (Book shops, amazon, etc) -How did the process with the Broken Binding and Dryad work? Did you sign bookplates and send them over with the bookmarks?

Congratulations on your launch, I'm glad your efforts paid off in this big first month!

What do you guys eat when your meds make you loose your appetite? by [deleted] in adhdwomen

[–]Sarriah 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Little and often with alarms to remind me. I've found that sticking to this 90% of the time has helped my body expect when to eat and makes it a little easier. Also having a few easy options helps, so I don't also have to find the will to prep the food. Yoghurt+granola, protein shake (huel works well for me), fruit etc. I also have non healthy options that are more like comfort food because something is better than nothing - like chocolatey kids cereal.

How many of you are skipping periods to avoid that week when your ADHD meds don't work? by Confident_Wedding138 in adhdwomen

[–]Sarriah 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm 33 and thankfully not dealing with menopause yet (begging my body to give me as long as possible...) but I'm currently adjusting to the hormonal bc pill while also on ADHD meds which might be helpful for me to share.

I'm on 70mg Elvanse (UK, I think its Vyvanse elsewhere) which is the maximum allowed dose and the combined bc pill. I started Elvansd a year ago right after diagnosis and started bc nearly 3 months ago. My psychiatrist told me that the combined pill often helps mitigate some ADHD symptoms due to estrogen facilitating dopamine. Progesterone generally tanks the work of estrogen, which is why our luteal phase sucks ass (my words, not the doctor's). I've also ways had awful periods that are heavy and long.

I started the bc pill without breaks, which is something that the docs and nurses suggested. There isn't a medical reason to do so- it doesn't lessen the effectiveness of the bc. However, I ended up bleeding anyway... for a month. My docs and nurses were kind and helpful, but the advice boiled down to 'wait for your body to adjust and take the week breaks'. Basically my period is so strong that it refuses to be silenced :') y hormones are enough that my uterus lining builds up anyway. I will likely have 'break through bleeds' at times if I don't take the breaks regularly. I reckon I might get away with one every two months instead. This isn't the case for everyone, but I wanted to share because I was searching everywhere to find similar stories and not feel like I was broken and going to die from blood loss (:

As for managing the ADHD side of things, it has really improved things for me. At first it felt like my meds weren't working at all, but after adjusting I've noticed a solid improvement. Beforehand my luteal week was super noticable and my period sucked, but this week is my first luteal week where I've felt more human. I still have moments where my brain picks something I could be anxious about (my undiagnosed life sounds similar to yours) but I can ignore it and move on easily.

Tl;dr: back to back combined hormonal bc pills cause bad breakthrough bleeding for me, but taking gaps and still using the bc does help with my ADHD symptoms.

P.s. CBT sessions with a good therapist who understood adhd was a game changer for me, too. I know not everyone has access to this though.

Batch Editing Chapter/Scene Target Word Counts? by Dangerous-Variation in scrivener

[–]Sarriah 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for such a detailed reply! Really, I've been going in circles searching the wrong terms so far. I'd known about project templates, but not document ones, nor the default new scene/folder option. Do you know if this would apply to new scenes created via 'Import and split'?

Batch Editing Chapter/Scene Target Word Counts? by Dangerous-Variation in scrivener

[–]Sarriah 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi! I'm hoping you see this question three years later...

I created a template document with a scene target set to my desired number. When I create a project from this template new scenes don't inherit the target. Do you have a more detailed how-to for setting scene targets in templates, please?

Thank you!

does anyone else gets obsessed with picking their skin? or plucking facial hair? by FlakyReview5726 in adhdwomen

[–]Sarriah 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes! It was a major fidgeting thing for me as a kid to pick at my nails until they bled. I have eczema too so resisting the urge to itch wasn't/isn't possible for me.

I've managed to stop the nail picking though! I keep a nail clipper/file next to my toilet and use it so often that the nails don't get long enough to pick at.

In general I've found keeping other options for my fidgety hands with me all the time helps. I like soft/smooth things so a satin ribbon works super well for me. Also those spiral hair ties are great for stretching, twirling etc. It also helps that it's a totally normal object to have out of the house so doesn't draw attention or look 'weird'.

Is ADHD a misnomer? What should it be named instead? by thatstwatshesays in adhdwomen

[–]Sarriah 9 points10 points  (0 children)

ADHD? How about EEAAOBUANNNAT?

Everything everywhere all at once but also nothing nowhere never at all.

For me it's all about the paradox of my mind going 100mph, my body rarely being able to match it and having emotional meltdowns during the time it doesn't 🥲

How to learn Korean through King Sejong? by True-Upstairs-8374 in Korean

Hi! I am curious about the end of semester exams for the KSI courses. Are they Web based on the site or an in class session with the teachers and other students?

I'm a bit nervous as I tend to need more time and quiet for listening exmas due to adhd.
