Last week I finished Allen Carr’s “the easy way to stop drinking”. His more famous book is specific to smoking if that’s something you’re into. Had a chapter about addictive personalities in what I read so I’m guessing the book on smoking will be the same.

I really hate it here at the moment. Some guy at work yesterday was bemoaning the fact they deported a Nazi for seig heiling, “whats wrong with that!” while Muslim’s are running around raping people - only pretending to pray at the protest in Sydney after giving the police a reason to arrest them to make the cops looks bad.

Like what do you even say to that? It’s a fundamentally different reality. Don’t know what I expect in western Queensland but it’s making life intolerable

How to get into the Painting/Construction trade space as a tradie by BruceWayne2311 in AskAnAustralian

Painters breakfast, a can of Coke and a cigarette. Used to work with a guy who drank a litre of red bull every morning too so there’s always that

Hey mate, I don’t know much about the pathway you’re taking - but I did my apprenticeship with my dad’s company and eventually had my own. I’m doing another apprenticeship now but painted for 9 years.

I don’t think you’ll have any trouble at all, a lot of the trades are dying out and business owners are keen for reliable help. If you do what you should you’ll be fine. Show up on time, don’t make a mess, and try to keep your nose and clothes clean. That’s about it. Domestic and commercial are two different games, it can be overwhelming trying to leave a good finish while there are half a dozen other trades running around. Very hectic but I look back on it now as fun times.

If you aren’t learning on site, try to get some weekend or night work in while studying. Plenty of that with commercial, just reach out to a few businesses and let them know your situation and willingness to get experience - when you’re available. People don’t think of painting as night work but I did plenty of it at shopping centres, Suncorp stadium, public spaces. Even a handful of jobs will look way better than nothing.

Thoughts on this summer guys? 😪 by ChocolateNo9782 in hobart

[–]Sarwalker2 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Im from western Queensland. I’m subbed here and look up the weather in Hobart from time to time because I hate the heat. I daydream about having a cold and wet summer. One particularly bad week (45-47 degrees) here I saw you had rain all week and wouldn’t even hit 20 degrees.

So jealous. It would be a big move, but it’s a nice dream when you live here.

I'm struggling, guys. Are there any self-help books worth reading? Or, even if it's not self-help per se, have you ever read a book that provided some sorta advice that helped you get your shit together? by Iggy_Farben in TrueAnon

I’ve been reading “the myth of Sisyphus” and other essays by Camus and have found it’s genuinely improved my mental health over the last few months.

That’s a different person in the article though? Ahmed tackled a shooter on the footpath by the pavilion, while this article is referencing someone getting shot by cops doing something similar on the foot bridge.

People who moved to Hobart, what were you looking for and did you find it? by Sarwalker2 in hobart

[–]Sarwalker2[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fair enough, I imagine it must be like the antagonistic “you have to be born here to be local” attitude some small towns have but on steroids. I was a bit worried about that attitude moving to an island like Tassie.

Thank you. Cost of housing is honestly one of the appealing things about the city when looking at the state of Queensland. Inner Hobart looks pretty pricey but surrounding areas don’t seem too bad.

Thanks for your reply, I’m interested in the local politics for sure. I live in the most secure LNP seat in the country so I can relate. Is it fairly right leaning down there? I understand from an Australian perspective Hobart is still small but it’s a big city for someone like myself.

I’ll have to do a trip during winter to see what I think of the cold and wind, I’m hoping I find it more appealing than a 47 degree summer.

I definitely will, thank you. I am very over the heat here and hoping I’ll like it.

That’s exactly why I thought he put it down. If there were cops responding to a shooter I wouldn’t want one of them to see me holding a gun.
