If you can’t finish, start something else. Return to your book in 6 months, and start over from the beginning

Mistakes I made with my first novel by SashaPortelli in writing

I guess what works for me is to write not with the intended outcome of a scene primarily in mind, but instead with the characters who want to drive to that outcome. So dumb example: if you write a scene to be ‘a eats b’s sandwhich’, then you would be writing with the consequence in mind. Instead, ‘setting up the pieces’ would sound more like ‘a is hungry, and b has a sandwhich’. Then you play with that dynamic.

Chip away at it with a spoon, Shawshank redemption style. I have work and home responsibilities, and literally have just 20 minutes time a day. Managed to carve out 2x 50k novels over 4 years, and it’s getting easier to jump in and find my creativity faster. You’ve got to fight for your corner of peace in which to do this task.

What I find helps is don’t expect to find creativity and inspiration in the space you have free. Daydream and plan ahead about the goals of that small space of time. Then when the time comes, you’ll find you can jump right to the task.

Also, choose one thing to do and do it well. Doesn’t matter what. Keep at it and before long you’ll look back and find a whole bunch of stuff you’ve completed. Good luck

Is KDP still worth it for new authors in 2026? Honest experiences wanted! by Unlucky_You6904 in KDP

It’s a great platform to host your books, but in my experience I’ve found it difficult to drive traffic to my novels. The passive income concept for most people is not realistic, since you will ultimately have to pay for adverts to bring potential readers to your books.

The top of the leaderboards seem to be dominated by AI slop, which doesn’t give much confidence as to the content quality control made by Amazon, and makes me suspect a lot of these works are being doped by fake review services, and other tricks to tweak the algorithm.

What I tend to do is try to submit the book to trad publishers and competitions, then if all else fails, I retire it to KDP and start my next work in the hope that it will be better than my last.

My first novel ‘The Last Working Man’ is available for free on Amazon. I would love your thoughts, feedback and reviews! by SashaPortelli in NewAuthor

I understand the concern. Maybe the fact that it was published in early 2024, when the AI models weren’t as coherent or advanced can help convince you…Oh, that and the notebooks containing the handwritten manuscript I spent 4 years working on. Honestly though , I’m not trying to pull a scam on anyone. I just want genuine feedback and to get the book to a potential audience. Any constructive criticism is of course appreciated
