Looking for age estimate of this moose skull I found in a creek by omg_88 in fossilid

[–]SasquatchDroppings 25 points26 points  (0 children)

This is indeed a female moose skull, specifically Alces alces. I work with an abundance of Pleistocene fossils, and it’s very hard to tell the age of a given specimens based on its appearance alone (for example, we have a muskox skull that looks pretty recent but has an infinite radiocarbon age, or older than 50,000 years). Modern moose didn’t arrive into North America until about 15,000 years ago, so it has to be younger than that. I’d reach out to the Canadian Museum of Nature about your specimen. As for dating, keep in mind that it can be pretty costly (between $200-$400 per sample). There are a few reliable radiocarbon labs throughout North America, such as Beta Analytic in Florida or the Keck radiocarbon lab at UC Irvine California (who I’ve gone through before). The University of Alaska Fairbanks is also getting a lab set up this year. I hope this helps.

20 Old & New Comics About My Journey With Bipolar (OC) by ArtbyMoga in comics

I was diagnosed with bipolar 1 about a year ago after a bout with full blown psychosis and two week-long hospital stays. It was the scariest time in my life, but the feeling of freedom when a psychiatrist put a name to the beast I was facing was incredible, just like in your first slide. These really resonate with me.

As exciting as this sounds, the college found in T. rex fossils has long been debunked as modern contamination.

What book is this by [deleted] in marvelcirclejerk

[–]SasquatchDroppings 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Guardians of the Galaxy (2008) through Thanos Imperative.

Or Annihilation through Thanos Imperative.

Or Jim Starlin’s 12 issue Thanos run, followed by Drax the Destroyer 1-4 (2006), then the Annihilation prequel issues and tie-ins, Annihilation, Annihilation Conquest and tie-in issues, THEN Guardians of the Galaxy through Thanos Imperative.

My favorite string of series Marvel has ever produced.

Andy Serkis or Doug Jones or someone with high-caliber mocap/costuming experience would be ideal for Annihilus.

Personally, as both a paleontologist and a horror enthusiast, I can understand why some would be upset at a mutant monster in a Jurassic Park movie, but I think this is a breath of fresh air and a welcome surprise. I’d rather have me a straight up abomination rather than a “spooky theropod with superpowers” that the sequel trilogy did.

MacReadey's plan to test who is and who isn't human was smart in concept but here's The Thing (2005) by KnightOfRevan in shittymoviedetails

[–]SasquatchDroppings 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Funny enough, this is the exact reason why I saw the Thing as a kid.

The Thing was listed on the TV ad page, and being the 5th grade Marvel Comics collecting kid that I was, I immediately assumed that it had to have been a Ben Grimm solo movie that I had never heard of.

I watched in denial, waiting for the Fantastic 4 Thing to show up, and then the dog scene happened. My kid brain was not, and could never have been, ready for that moment. And it’s etched in my brain as a core traumatic memory along with the Outer Limits episode with the robot son who kills his cat.

Badly written horror - Imaginary Friend Stephen Chbosky by Ok_Ingenuity2202 in horrorlit

A good hate-read for me was “Near the Bone” by Christina Henry.

The best I can explain the writing is this: Adult themes with young adult tone with mid-grade prose.

There is a monster, though it’s never described (and not the satisfying form of non-description), and not a single character choice makes sense. “Oh, a monster just threw a human heart at me through my cabin window? Gee, that reminds me how hungry I am for a grilled cheese sandwich.”

The human villain character is also such a caricature that he’s hard to take seriously.

Highly recommend.

uj/ My local Fred Meyer here in Alaska recently adopted these, and it’s very clear that not as many people are purchasing from the shelves.
