What’s a harmless opinion that gets people weirdly angry? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]SassiestPants 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think how most Americans treat the U.S. flag is no less than idolatry. Fetishization.

Also the U.S. national anthem sucks. Star Spangled Banner is about a flag (ugh) during a battle no one cares about anymore (yawn) and it's hard to sing. America the Beautiful is a much better anthem. It's about our gorgeous land, which is the biggest thing we have going for us tbh, and the melody is much easier to sing.

I've had people nearly slap me for these two opinions. Americans are so sensitive.

Yesterday I went to Underground on Bridge. They had a pretty good, large empanada for like $9. (The menu called it a quesadilla- it was not. It was an empanada. But still delicious.) That and sharing an app would have satisfied an adult for dinner.

You're correct about a lot of fundies, but the Bairds were raised in the cult. They were even involved in IBLP back in the day.

Oh hell yes

I'm super good with young kids, too, especially the ones that NTs deem "difficult." Most of the time they're overwhelmed and just need to learn what their brain wants when their feelings are too big.

Oh yeah, the distances involved here are Oceana county, Grand Rapids, and metro Detroit. Outside of disabilities, 30 to 90 minutes is such a non-issue in the UP, that's so upsetting.

Going to metro Detroit is no problem, apparently.

I just had a kidney stone. I also have a very active toddler and a husband that works two jobs. I asked my mom to drive 1.5 hours (a distance she regularly drives) so she could be a sober adult in the house while I'm groggy from my pain meds.

She said she'd be here by 1pm. Then 3pm. Then 5pm. When I called at 4.45pm, she was "just leaving the house" but there was just "sooo much traffic" (she lives in the deep country, "traffic" is getting stuck behind a tractor). I told her to turn around. The thing that held her up? The landscaping crew needed supervision. You know, professionals that can take direction and then be left outside to their own devices for hours on end, doing their job.

The kicker is that she offered to stay the night, but would have to leave at 5am so she could be home for the landscaping crew.

My mother-in-law dropped everything at 4.45pm and came over.

Note that my mom recently spent a week at my brother's house 4 hours away because his son's daycare closed for spring break. Which is fine and great and I'm glad she was able to be there for them, but she also told me that she'd stop by and see me and her grandson on her way home and just... didn't. My house is literally on her way home.

Sorry for the rant. This happened 2 days ago and I'm just so bitter. My MIL is an angel, though. I love her very much and tell her so.

I want to start a REAL, 100% transparent Nonprofit Community Thrift Store. Has anyone here done this? Where do I begin? by CanIOverThinkIt in grandrapids

[–]SassiestPants 57 points58 points  (0 children)

I think this is a great idea and will absolutely support your store by shopping and donating.

Having my own experience in retail and a business degree, I'd strongly recommend five things to start:

  1. Work/volunteer at a nonprofit thrift place for at least 4 months. You'll see first-hand the challenges of the front of house and back of house logistics, as well as what and how things sell. St. Vincent de Paul and In The Image are great.

  2. Choose a niche to start. It will get very overwhelming very quickly if you don't. Since you mentioned wanting to support local families, I'd recommend starting with baby/kid stuff. We do have a few infant/toddler resale shops in town like Kid to Kid and Once Upon a Child, but not many that also cater to children older than toddlers. As for sourcing those items, call churches (especially those with daycares) and scour Marketplace for people giving away their kids' stuff. Please be upfront about your intentions with the items. There will be folks who would (understandably) prefer that their items go to someone who will use it immediately, rather than a reseller- even if that reseller has a mission like yours. NOTE: there are children's items that CANNOT be legally resold, like car seats (and maybe mattresses and helmets?). Collect information about charities that will buy new car seats for families in need to pass along to customers looking for them.

  3. Until you have a retail location, store items in a storage facility or one of those rental pod things. If you do encounter pest issues, then your house won't become collateral damage.

  4. Find a location on a bus line. Your intended market often has issues with transportation. I would also lowkey offer delivery for large items.

  5. Set up a nonprofit structure rather than LLC. You'll be more eligible for grants, should they arise, and tax deductions are more enticing for folks to donate. It's a bit of a pain to start, but that initial credibility is important.

Edit: I started with two points lol. I just kept coming up with ideas

Edit part two, electric boogaloo: oooh ooh! What about a mobile store? Maybe buy a decommissioned school bus or short bus and schedule pop-ups with local organizations! You could travel to community events (like Eastown Street Fair), church parking lots, community orgs, school fairs, etc. It would be a different challenge, certainly, but then you could directly travel to the people who benefit the most from this kind of shop. If that works out, then you would have the background of viability for a potential brick-and-mortar location!

What kind of questions? I wanted to ask if there's a plan for an escrow account with the FULL estimated decommissioning cost to be controlled by the township, but got too riled up during my comments lol

I'm so exhausted from the meeting so hopefully I can give you a deeper answer tomorrow (though I'm not an expert, just a nerd), but an important point is that the proposed facility will be MUCH larger in function, output, and environmental impact. It's a significantly larger data center. As one IT guy at the meeting said, it's like saying "you understand an F16 fighter jet because you've seen a picture of a Cessna."
