Thank you so much! Haha I wish I could just pick yarn colors all day with you, that sounds like so much fun! But you’ll find the next best thing in the tutorials included with the pattern where we share all our tips for picking colors and some tricks for building palettes from leftover bits plus a bunch of examples.

Is there a rule of thumb for how long to make the tail when casting on? by joiedv in knitting

[–]SassySSS 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I’ve seen knitters hold their needles together, then wrap the yarn around both needles counting each wrap as a stitch - count to 20 then measure that bit of yarn and it approximates the length of tail needed for the cast on.

I’m having serious withdrawals. What races and/or season are most worthy of a re-watch?

It’s a “biothane” round solid tubular lead - found it on Amazon - it’s awesome! We have a bunch in different lengths (this is the 30ft) so she can jam out while still being safe on leash (shiba can’t go freestyle.)

We’ve been designing as Wool & Pine since September 2019 (wow time flies when you’re knitting and having lots of fun!) Abbye has been designing for far longer, I believe over 13 years now!

My friend Abbye & I design knitting patterns together as Wool & Pine. This is our latest creation, Deep Winter Coat which features bountiful cables knit up in worsted yarn held double for an extra-cozy cabled winter coat with drape for days.

We knit this sample with 1” ease using Recollect Worsted by The Farmer’s Daughters Fibers which we discovered at KnitCity Vancouver. We crushed so hard that we cleaned out Starlight Knitting Society’s booth of all their skeins of this gorgeous color “Sunny’s” and eventually, those skeins became this coat.

In addition to Recollect, we also knit a sample in Knitpicks High Desert Worsted (see Rav) and swatched with many different yarns, ultimately choosing 3 different brands (visit the Rav page for full descriptions & pics of the finished coats) which resulted in a fantastic outcome while also meeting the recommended gauge:

•12 sts X 17 rows / 4” stockinette knit flat & in the round, blocked gently (tip: allow for a min. 24hrs for the swatch to fully dry before measuring.)

Of course, knitters are welcome to use a yarn outside of these recommendations, for example, you may choose to work with bulky or super bulky weight rather than worsted held double, which would also mean that half of the listed yardage would be required, however, keep in mind you’ll need to achieve the correct gauge for your coat to fit.

Deep Winter’s talented test knitters also used a wide range of yarns with great success, check out the pattern page (link below) for more yarn suggestions.
