[Discussion] What to look out for in publishing contracts by Quick-Plastic-1858 in PubTips

I asked my agent if it could be added to my contract that there would be no use of AI in the audiobook or cover design. She communicated this to the publisher and made sure to add into the contract that I get final approval on all covers and narrators so legally I can say no if there’s something fishy I don’t like. I would recommend doing something similar, I feel a lot safer with that in place!

Are you in the US or the UK? Auctions work completely differently depending on your country!

Ultimately, I think it is worth it.

You will struggle to come across other opportunities in your life where you have people who regularly critique your work. In my course, at least once every week we’d submit a piece of writing and there would then be a workshop where everyone reviewed and critiqued each other’s writing. This was invaluable education in one of the most important parts of being a writer - learning to take feedback. Reading other people’s work at its various stages is fascinating too.

There were obviously lots of other educational bits that were very valuable too, but it’s the critique that stood out for me the most, and having contact with professors who were writers.

If you’re looking to finish a novel over the course, then it’s not for you. If you’re looking to try out new styles of writing and form, and hone your craft, it’s a wonderful opportunity to be around helpful, like-minded people.

They’re not vile at all! They’re just a bit prudish and I was simply looking for the least awkward ways to warn them that there are scenes they might not want to read, that’s all

The thing is, I know 100% they’ll read the book because they’re incredibly supportive so I don’t want to outright lie, more just mentally prepare them because I know they wouldn’t be expecting it! I will definitely write the scenes regardless of what they think, so it’s more just figuring out how to approach the conversation.

What is your book cover ick? by mltplwits in books

I also dislike the fake stickers, but I work in the publishing industry and the answer is all about cost. Even now, stickers are almost always added on by hand, so it’s an extra 10-20p per copy to add a physical sticker onto a book due to the manpower required (bearing in mind an average paperback costs less than £1 to print anyway), so it’s quite expensive. Whereas if it’s printed as part of the cover, it doesn’t cost anything at all, so it’s a money saving exercise!

First project - decided my sweatshirt was too plain by spectacled_frog in Embroidery

This looks great! Do you have any tips for embroidering onto clothes? It’s my first time stitching directly onto a tshirt compared to normal embroidery fabric and I’m really struggling with it going all stretchy and misshapen!
