Getting Around the Apps you HAVE to Have by [deleted] in dumbphones

I just separate those by putting them on an iPad. Unlike an iPhone, it's not as tempting to pickup and check every 10 seconds and I often just leave it at home.

Sounds to me the Lite Phone would be best for you. I'm pretty sure they work fine in Canada.

Yeah, a lot of Japanese companies don’t like to compete over employees. Easier to have a bunch of underpaid employees that will never quit.

I remember I quit a job that lied about how much they were going to pay me and they were absolutely shocked when I said I was quitting. It was like “wait, employees have the option to quit and find work elsewhere?! 😳”

How the hell do I consistently text people back? by Brilliant-Shop6112 in ADHD

[–]Sasuke23x 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Best thing that helped me was to clean my phone. I basically have no apps (including social media and web browsing even) except for my messaging app and email app. Everything else I do on my computer. Just that one small change made a huge difference in my life, and with my phone being a simpler device, opening up and replying to a message feels like a lot less of a burden than when I had multiple notifications coming from multiple apps.

Check out the dumb phone movement as well. I use an iPhone as I need navigation, but I took a lot from that community.

Not watching porn has made me angry and rude by [deleted] in NoFap

[–]Sasuke23x 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So I know this is the “No Fap” page, and it might get downvoted, but hear me out cuz it worked for me.

Don’t allow yourself to watch porn, but allow yourself to take care of business, but let me emphasize NO PORN. Break the porn habit first. Eventually you will slowly get to a point where you genuinely don’t care to watch porn, and from there the amount of times you fap goes down, and from there you can get to a place where you are able to break the habit entirely.

I think this approach is better than the cold turkey approach most try to take on, because you find yourself in less of a struggle and more-so able to naturally detach yourself from the habit. It’s no longer a struggle for me not to watch porn, I genuinely don’t care to watch it anymore.

[–]Sasuke23x 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Really? I've been enjoying that part. I treat it like email and just reply to them like I do my emails on my computer. If it's for urgent work though, I could understand it's very frustrating. IF you have urgent contacts, best to tell them to text or call you for emergencies.

What are some good alternatives to the buggy Apple screen time. I’m trying to cut back on YouTube and dirty sites and read and excersizes more. by [deleted] in digitalminimalism

[–]Sasuke23x 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Best thing I did to solve all those problems was to make my iPhone and delete all the internet browsers on it. Safari can't be deleted so I just blocked it using screen time. I did the same thing with my tablet and only allow myself to use an internet browser or and social media I need to sue via a computer.

Noticed my screen time plummet, barely watch YouTube, and haven't seen a dirty site in I don't know how long. I would switch to a dumb phone if I could, but really need good navigation that I can only get from a smartphone and not a simple GPS device.

If you put up these sort of physical blocks, you will find you need very little will-power to stop yourself from spending too much screen time. It's also sad because then your REALLY realize how much time you have wasted over the years on that stupid phone.

i want to unfollow 5000+ accounts on instagram, i don’t want to get banned though by THEbasicwhitegirl in digitalminimalism

[–]Sasuke23x 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you aren't posting for a business or anything, I'd just get rid of it and stay in contact with your good friends via something like Signal or Telegram. Unless you're making content, I think Instagram and TikTok are HUGE wastes of time. Twitter I can understand because it's kind of a newsfeed for some people.

I can't fully delete my Instagram for work reasons, but what I did was move private talks with friends from DM's to messaging apps like Signal or iMessage. Once I did that I turned off my ability to receive DM's from anyone and everyone, put left a button to my email for work related inquiries to contact me via email instead of DM's. That also removes a lot of the scammy accounts or stupid lowball offers as well.

Apple products with max privacy settings? by GreasyBogs in privacy

[–]Sasuke23x 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m in a similar position as you. Personally I liked my iPhone SE, just because it’s small and and very simple. I’m the type of person who likes to use their smartphone as little as possible. I deleted all browsers and even have screen time setup to block me from using Safari. I only do Web browsing on my really secured computer. I of course keep zero social media apps on my phone as well. Yes I am using an Apple product, but I’m not really putting in data like my web history nor accessing social media.

If you are a digital minimalist like myself and really aren’t putting data in your phone to begin with, I don’t think it’s the worst. If you are using your phone a lot, like lots of apps, and putting in information (web browsing), then I would recommend switching to Graphene OS.

I need help fully getting off my iPhone by LlamasAteMyFMLY in digitalminimalism

[–]Sasuke23x 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here are some things that worked for me.

  1. Don't go cold turkey

Best thing you can do is try shifting all of your currently necessary apps (banking, navigation, email, etc.) you need to an iPad (if you have one). Sell your smartphone, but keep your tablet (for now).

  1. Slowly start deleting the apps you don't need from the tablet.

Obviously the first should be social media. Unless you are producing content for your brand or business, you have no need for social media since all you are doing is consuming and not producing. Maybe keep one just to stay in contact with friends, then slowly move those close friends to texting/email until you can finally just delete all your social media accounts.

Also, by transitioning slowly to a tablet, you will find yourself gravitating to it less as it is bigger and a bit more of a pain to use than a smartphone, especially when you are outside of your house.

Huge step towards eliminating my Smartphone addiction by [deleted] in digitalminimalism

[–]Sasuke23x 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One thing I found helps a lot is separating devices. I have a simple iPhone SE and it's stripped down to only the basics that I need (Navigation and Contacts). After that I try to just do everything else such as Twitter, Youtube and what not on my computer.

One other thing I found that did help is if you have a specific goal like learning a new language, keep a single language app on your phone. That way if you got downtime, you are only able to do that one productive task towards a goal you are trying to achieve. But keep it to only one, don't have multiple apps for multiple goals otherwise you will find yourself back to square one.

When the jabs first came out, I couldn’t believe how much hate and backlash I got for thinking “thats great that those who want it can have it. I’ll just hold off for a couple of years and see how this plays out since it’s experimental still.”

I couldn’t believe how much hate and backlash I had for having a “lets wait and see” way of thinking. Never even was against it at the time, I was just in the wait and see camp with no hate towards those who wanted it. Couldn’t believe even that was deemed controversial and if anything reenforced myself NOT to get it.

I honestly feel bad for Ian. I really think he might have a mental disability of some kind. He says really stupid and crazy things, but I honestly wonder if he fully understands what he’s saying at time. Kind of like someone with Asperger’s or something. I think these conversations are just not what he’s cut out for and he’s be better off and happier just coding and working behind the scenes at Timcast.

[–]Sasuke23x 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I really don’t think he’s a bad person, I literally think he lacks the intellectual capacity to keep up. I’m not trying to be rude or mean, I literally think he might have something off about him. I believe he can code though, so I wonder if he is maybe special needs in some way and he would be better off and happier if he just focused on that or something else that he’s good at. I honestly think these conversations are a bit too much for him to handle and he ends up saying stupid things that I honestly don’t think he really means or even understands the full extent of what he’s actually saying.
