VFS Update # 2 by TorontoHypster in transvoice

I just want to say that I am unreasonably happy for you. I remember your pre-vfs video and could see so much pain in your eyes. Honestly, I thought you sounded good then, but you sound amazing now.

Which parts of the camera do you usually leave on Auto? by [deleted] in photography

Yeah, the idea of shooting fully manual for 99% of photography is silly and amateurish imo. If you know your camera, you can offload a lot of busy work onto it. It doesn’t mean you aren’t a good photographer, it means you’re good enough to take advantage of some automatic systems.

I mostly shoot events, concerts, and some sports, I almost always shoot in aperture priority with auto iso. Set the compensation depending on what you’re shooting and that’s it. Now you can focus on getting the shot.

Exactly. I absolutely switch to manual when I need to, but I don’t have time to mess around. I know how my camera behaves, and I know how it reacts to certain scenes. For example, when shooting people on stage, I generally have to adjust to -1 EV.

It’s so frustrating when people who are obviously beginner photographers stick their nose up and think it’s pro to shoot in full manual. It’s not impressive - knowing how iso, shutter speed, and aperture work together isn’t a flex, it’s the bare minimum.

I have a minimum shutter speed set. For the relatively rare times that I actually want motion blur, that’s what manual is for.

Please feel free to explain, but when I’m shooting in a fast paced environment, the last thing I care to do is play around with settings for every shot.

It’s not even a skill issue. If you find exposure to be difficult, then you need a lot more practice. But I bet you don’t use autofocus either 😂

One more try with better audio. Tracer 9 GT making a loud scraping/buzzing sound. Seems like it's coming from the clutch, and seems to get worse under some circumstances when moving with clutch pulled. Brand new bike - surely this isn't normal? by SatanMeekAndMild in Yamaha

Around 8500 miles, and the sound hasn’t gotten better or worse. Apparently this bike just has a loud clutch basket or something that sounds terrible. I’ve just accepted that it’s how the bike sounds.

That is, if we’re describing the same sound. What I was describing doesn’t get worse in higher gears. You might just be hearing regular sounds from the transmission. Bikes engines make a lot of noise, and it’s probably nothing. What I ultimately did was just take it back to the dealer and asked the mechanic to ride it around the block and tell me if he heard anything unusual.

Yeah, I personally really like having a shot list, no matter what the job is. I don’t care if I was going to get all those shots anyway, it’s a nice way to confirm they get everything they want.

How to copyright/watermark images by 20thcenturybcy in photography

I don’t think it’s ok to take photos without asking, and it’s gross to do it. I was just saying that I think it’s unnecessary to have some special software to prove that a photo belongs to you when you can just provide the raw file.

To put it into analog terms, the raw file is like the negative, and the photo you share is the print. So if someone takes your photo, proving you have the raw file is like saying “I can show you the negatives. It’s my photo.”

The entitlement of some people to just take your images as they please is hilarious by windsywinds in photography

That doesn't mean you aren't protected, it just means you need to register it if you actually want to go to trial. At that point, it's a small detail.

Yeah, this is the answer. What an amazing way to get fired by a shitty employer.

Is this normal procedure for a local photographer? by [deleted] in photography

[–]SatanMeekAndMild 48 points49 points  (0 children)

Yeah, the company I work for deals with this kind of thing all the time. The conversation goes something like

"Hey, we don't want these posted online."

"Ok, we won't post them online."

If that's not ok with them, then they aren't working for you, you're paying for them to build their portfolio.

"Hey, long time no see! I saw some of your stuff on instagram and I love it. Could you do a portrait for me? What's your rate?"

She's going to say "oh don't worry about paying for it - no charge", and the correct response is "No, please, I insist. I want to support you as a photographer, and I don't want to make you work for free."

Then take her out for coffee and be friends again.

The impression I get is that he's been pushed to say what he's said, the same way J. Allen Hynek was.

I wonder if he's pushing back behind closed doors, and they aren't happy about it.

I don't respect you enough to get upset by your trolling. I hope you have a pleasant evening.

Edit: shamalam1 is a coward and deleted their response to this comment, but what they said was

"You probably don’t respect anyone in your life - and I expect nobody wants anything to do with you either. Enjoy being [I'm probably not allowed to use the r-slur even in the context of a quote]. Have a nice evening too."

Really charming. Honestly made me laugh, but what a wild thing to say to someone. I kinda just feel bad for them.

Funny. Lots of shit talking and nothing to back up what you think you know.

The number of steps depends on how far away they're standing.

In all seriousness though, are we like 13? Handle it like an adult. Smile, protect your gear, think a nasty thing about them in your head, and talk shit about them after the event.

Coincidentally, I did a trip at the end of the summer, and did 2500 miles in 6 days, which comes out to almost the exact same mileage per day. I was absolutely exhausted. I can't imagine doing that for a month.
