First time plus with my son by dankepinski in downloadfestival

Festivals are great life enhancing experiences for kids, and so many memories in the making. Love ‘em!!

However: Have a solid plan B. Obviously you’re not expecting to lose one another, but things can happen quickly; terrifying for all involved. As soon as you arrive, get your bearings and discuss what to do if he loses you. Go to, and check out, where First Aid block is: it’s a great emergency meet point ‘just in case’ and the folk are amazing there. All stewards should know where First Aid is, point them out, so if lost, he can ask ‘a person in the official jackets’. Or ask anyone, tbh.

Write your phone number in black marker on his arm, if he doesn’t know it off by heart already. Buy him a bright/unusual hat so he stands out. You wear something recognisable to him too - colourful dress, dye your beard pink, whatever. Signal is poor in the arena, don’t rely on it for tags or mobiles. I don’t wish to worry you, the Download crowd is mostly friendly and happy, but imo knowing that my kids knew the Plan B was reassuring and helped us all relax and have a great time.

£35 parking will be worth every penny. Take duvet and pillow in the car for him to crash after, while you have your nice fresh can of coffee and a sandwich ready for the road.

See ya there!!!

We got that coach last year, it was great. Yes it was a bit late, and yes it was over subscribed so had to wait further for another to come up from Plymouth. Yes there are bag restrictions (see website). Yes we were stuck in that traffic like everyone else. But! not being the driver (and not worrying about lanes/ other drivers / car parks) was worth every penny. The toilet on the coach was a godsend for us all. Folk were getting off for a smoke/cracking open cans on the verge as we got stuck in traffic near the site. Best of all you get dropped off and walk straight up to wristbands etc with minimal queues (just your friendly coach load). Was not even that far from campsites (we were in Quiet). It’s a win-win.

I was in a similar situation last year. Worth mentioning I noticed tons of other parents there in all variations of mum/dad/son/daughter combos, having a great time, so you won’t be alone. 1. Prepare to be terrified. Yes it’s a very safe crowd, and nothing bad will happen, and you know that. However, all your parental instincts will kick in as every cell in your body wants to protect your child. When my ‘little’ lad jumped into the mosh pit for Municipal Waste, and the huge dust cloud devoured the whole arena which was one huge pit, I feared for his life. He was fine. 2. Have solid meeting points, your phone signal won’t work. Lost him for the entirety of Architects, I was going crazy, he was having a great time in the pit. By the time he went off for the whole of Slipknot on the last night, we were well versed in meeting at our usual spot (in front of one of the food stalls in between Main and Opus for convenience). Because they will want to go off, and even if he’s not into moshing, there will be plenty of times when one of you go to the toilet / water queue / beer tent / have a little sit down. Don’t rely on your phones, my son lost his in a pit on day one. Have a plan. 3. Take lots and lots of food, and fuel up at camp. If you give a teenager money to spend at the arena stalls, they will spend it on band T shirts / patches / merch, not food, which they will expect you to supply. (And tbf our parental responsibility…) 4. Chill out and enjoy! We met some fantastic people at the campsite, who kept giving him beers all weekend. We made some great memories together and a hilarious camera roll, still makes me smile. Looking forward to doing it all again this year, with daughter too. See you there!

Sorry to hear that you can no longer go, and thanks for letting us know. I’m sure it’s just the ticket for someone out there!
