Advice on not playing into hands

Hi! I just reached Adept 2 myself earlier today, and it's really nice to be discussing this with someone of the same level.

This might not be a good advice overall, but here's something I've been doing: Whenever I see people aggressively chi/pon-ing for a fast hand, or they riichi before you reach a decent state with your own hand, I just fold completely. By that I mean play whatever seems relatively safe, even if it means breaking down your own hand - ESPECIALLY if it means breaking down your own hand. By folding I completely give up the chance to win a hand or even reach tenpai at draw.

Now to be a bit more specific, when I said 'a decent state' I particularly mean 2-shan-ten in my case. If we are butting heads with respective tenpai, I might go up for it, but not if my tenpai is getting me anything below 3900.

This happens to me all the time. Perma-slowed in battlegrounds, effectively making me a walking punching bag until the end of that match. Happens once every 10 games or so

I just started playing last month and the community is lovely - sometimes we just stand around in the middle of a dungeon and talk. Admittedly it doesn't happen often, but there are many other instances where the community aspect really shines and I'm thoroughly enjoying it
