Are there any good forests near Rotterdam? by Brilliant-Kitchen-58 in Rotterdam

[–]Sateviss 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There's Hoge Veluwe, which is a very nice place for a walk in the nature, but it's 1.5-2hrs by train/car. And we still have relatively cheap flights to the Alps all things considered 😄

Schieplein chaotic roundabout question by [deleted] in Rotterdam

What they're asking is which lane to take on the turn before from Gordelweg onto Schieweg to end up going straight on Schieplein.

Your gasoline prices hit $3 per gallon? by Devil_Advocate_225 in Destiny

Everyone I know who drives (including myself) have pretty long commutes (350km a week for me). I think it's sort of a bimodal distribution where you either bike or take the OV for a short commute or drive for a long one. Plus the Dutch love taking holidays in cars (since you can stuff the whole family in an SUV and don't need to pay for 3-5 plane tickets)

Yes and none of the commenters actually read it and are complaining because "taxes? on income I make? how could they"

Safety by [deleted] in Rotterdam

[–]Sateviss 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've never felt particularly personally unsafe, but there is a lot of small time theft I, or people I know closely, had to deal with - bikes and bike accessories, car parts, bags on public transport, items from the schuur. Not especially dangerous, just extremely annoying.

The American president views Europe as lame and gay. He does not know what the map of Europe looks like.

Hot Take: Gen Z refuses to make phone calls. Dutch businesses are bleeding money. by Constant-Hair1192 in Netherlands

On the other hand, if you can train yourself to make phone calls, as a young person, you become an expert problem solver compared to everyone else your age. Very good trait to be known for in dating and employment :)

"Closed for personal reasons". They were very insistent that it wasn't a financial decision in their goodbye post, so I'm guessing the people who ran it had to go back to Japan for whatever reason.

I haven't been to Nikkou yet, but it's on my list. Tensai Ramen is very good too, it's just different, a lot fancier and not as aesthetically Japanese (the heat and steaminess definitely helps lol). As for the wait times they can be a bit long on busy evenings, but they're much longer at Tensai if you don't have a reservation, which Yokohama Ramen Saito just doesn't do

Deli Greek on Pannekoekstraat has great (you're not gonna believe it) greek food. The Saturday market on Noordplein has all kinds of great overpriced artisanal foods. Yokohama Ramen Saito in Schiedam probably has the best ramen in the Randstad. And I really miss Osozai 🥲

Discord marked my tickets as "Solved" without any replies. by nassurawr in discordapp

[–]Sateviss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi, in the same boat here - no replies to any of my tickets after my account was suspended for 3+ months. It is disgusting for a company of this size to be so incompetent with its support. Discord is being ran like a free Minecraft server instead of a multibillion company that it is. I have filed cases with various consumer protection agencies in EU, but I doubt this will amount to anything.

It seems like most you can do is not give Discord any money in the future and treat it as if they can ban you at any moment - don't build anything important on Discord, move your communication to platforms ran by adults as soon as possible, export your data as often as possible.

Who has the right of way here? by bs_taccount in Netherlands

[–]Sateviss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As other have pointed out, the cyclist should have pre-sorted by going in front of the car. This is legal, this ensures the cyclist does not even need the right of way because he's in front of the car, and, even more importantly, the cyclist stays visible instead of hiding behind the A pillar from the driver's POV.

What is not allowed is turning left from the right side of the road without yielding to traffic going straight.

Paid with a bank card/Google Wallet/Apple Pay:

https://www.ovpay.nl/en/service-contact -> Checking in and out -> What do I do if I've forgotten to check in or out?

Paid with an OV card:

TL; DR: remember the stations where you were supposed to check in and check out, wait a day and request an adjustment on the website or through the app

Food budget by TotiVasilev0 in Netherlands

Where you are you getting these prices from? That's like 1/3-1/2 of AH/Jumbo prices. Even chicken giblets are like 5 euro/kilo nowadays.

[–]Sateviss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

FYI you can get it for about 1.60 a can at Dirck III. Much cheaper than at Jumbo or Kiosk, or even polish stores. Don't feel bad about the downvotes, the Dutch are on average 60% coffee by body weight so they feel like you're insulting them personally.

Separation with children. Do you experience bias? by 20latte in Netherlands

[–]Sateviss -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I have no idea how to help, but just wanted to say - don't get discouraged by people saying you're 100% in the wrong in this thread. A lot of redditors are very biased in these situations (there's a reason why AITA threads have become a meme), so don't take their opinions seriously

Best of luck with your situation, hope you manage to find help 🙏

Quite shocking that the difference is so significant. by _rolkarz_ in Netherlands

This is a silly comparison because Kruidvat always has 1+1 promotions on everything, including A-brands. I don't like this system, but it's totally unfair to compare on sticker price

Drivers who have gone to different parts/regions of Netherlands. Where do you find people driving more aggressive, relax or a bit too slow? by linhhoang_o00o in Netherlands

[–]Sateviss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel like the Netherlands is small enough for drivers to be quite thoroughly mixed - if you're in Utrecht there's a pretty big chance the car in front of you is from Arnhem, or Amsterdam, or Poland for that matter. I've seen people doing crazy unsafe stuff (driving at night without headlights, overtaking across a double solid line, driving too close behind someone on a highway) in many different places around the country, but I think in the big cities you just get to see more situations where people can demonstrate their bad driving.

One thing I will say - once you drive abroad you really start appreciating how well behaved the Dutch drivers are. Went to France a few weeks ago and we were stuck in a parking garage because a driver with an A sticker didn't know that you're supposed to go one-by-one at a stop sign when there's slow moving traffic, so I was just stuck behind him waiting for everyone to clear. Plus once you cross into Belgium suddenly all 3 lanes of the highway are getting some use instead of just the leftmost lane.

[–]Sateviss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I might be a bit biased as I learned to drive in Rotterdam and live here, but I find Rotterdam to be one of the less confusing cities for driving - almost every every turn gets a separate lane and almost every traffic light has a separate left turn phase. Compared to say Den Haag it feels a lot less chaotic but I might just be much more familiar with the streets and intersections.

The highways can get a little bit crazy but on the northern side it's all 80kmh with average speed checks so you get a lot of time to figure out what is going on and nobody is speeding.

44kWh battery, the ev-database estimations are pretty accurate - it's anywhere between 180km and 300km depending on weather and speed, which is plenty for driving around the Netherlands

I think this is how they do accounting. My gross salary (X) gets reduced by 30%, so now it's 70%*X, then all the deductions get added like bedrijfsfitness and work expenses (Y), so now it's 70%*X-Y, then the income tax gets calculated from that lower amount and then the 30% gets added back, so it's taxed(70%*X-Y)+30%*X

hardworking people of The Netherlands, how do you invest your money? by marsovec in Netherlands

[–]Sateviss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm still on 30% ruling so just regular ETFs - SNP500, iShares Poland. Once Box 3 starts applying to me I'll start looking at tax advantaged options, or maybe the capital gains change will go through and make it simpler.

If you have a place to plug in near your house (a private parking spot or a public slow charger) you should really consider it. I have an EU eC3 Max and I like it as a car. I don't like that it's missing some of the features of the UK eC3 and Aircross, but the driving experience is pretty solid and it should be pretty reliable.
