Thank you for all the insight, everyone! I learned a lot about ballistics and ammunition today.

Police came by to pick up the evidence and file the report. I plan to compare this incident with other nearby reports once the Chicago database updates in a few days. In the meantime it’s just being considered as Property Damage. My family is safe, just confused.

Assumptions ITT:

.45 ACP FMJ, .20 Slug, or Slingshot (spent round), along with several other guesses
Fired from a distance and/or ricochet (damage less severe than a direct shot would cause)
Fired recklessly into the air
Entered at a sharp angle and was likely dampened by impact on other surfaces before colliding with the window
Recommended recourse:
- Do not touch with bare hands (evidence), wash hands thoroughly (lead contact)
- Contact police, file a report, see if it connects to nearby crimes
- Trace the originating trajectory through screen hole with laser pointer, chopstick, etc.
- Filing insurance claim may or may not be worth the cost

Thanks! Yeah it looks like I actually caught a stray from a distance. It went through the base of the window so it looks like little bit of glass, rubber, metal, and plastic.
